Abstract: The demand for nuclear fuel for research reactors is increasing worldwide. However, some nuclear fuel factories have low production volumes. Literature regarding how to expand the capacity of those facilities in a safe and reliable way is scarce. Thus, the purpose of this work is to propose and validate a conceptual model for increasing the production capacity of such factories. The facilities addressed here are those that produce plate-type fuel elements loaded with LEU U3Si2-Al, which are typically used in nuclear research reactors. Data from a real nuclear fuel plant was collected and applied to the model, thus setting up a case study. Two different strategies, as well as several production scenarios, were conceived for the use of the model. Each scenario experiments with the different possibilities of enlarging capacity. Discrete events simulation was used in order to cover all production scenarios. The tests indicated significant increases in productive capacity, thus showing that the model fully achieved its proposed objective. One of the main conclusions to be highlighted is the model’s effectiveness, which was demonstrated by using the model in two different strategies and obtaining increases in capacity with both of them.

In: INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR ATLANTIC CONFERENCE, October 22-27, 2017, Belo Horizonte, MG. Proceedings... Rio de Janeiro, RJ: Associação Brasileira de Energia Nuclear, 2017.

Abstract: Strategic planning has always been and continues to be one of the most important management tools for decision making. Amidst the uncertainties of the 21st century, public, private and third sector organizations are steadily struggling to improve their strategic plans by using more effective results management tools such as BSC-Balanced Scorecard. Nuclear research institutes and research centers around the world have been using more and more these types of tools in their strategic planning and management. The objective of this article was to recommend the use the BSC as a strategic tool for decision making for the Sealed Sources Production Laboratory located in the Radiation Technology Center, at Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN/CNEN-SP), in São Paulo, Brazil. The methodology used in this academic article was a case study, which considered the object of the study, the Sealed Sources Production Laboratory, from January 2014 to August 2016. Among the main results obtained with this study can be cited: the improvement of the information flow, the visualization and proposition to change the periodicity of analysis of the results, among others. In view of the expected results, it was possible to conclude that this study may be of value to the Sealed Sources Production Laboratory for Industrial Radiography and Industrial Process Control and also to other research centers, as it will allow and contribute with an additional management support tool.

Abstract: The demand for nuclear fuel for research reactors is rising worldwide. Thus, the production facilities of this kind of fuel need reliable guidance on how to augment their production in order to meet the increasing demand efficiently and safely. We proposed a specific procedure for increasing production ca-pacity. That procedure was tested with data from a real plant, which produces plate-type fuel elements loaded with LEU U3Si2-Al fuel. The test was made by means of discrete event simulation, and the results indicated the proposed procedure is efficient in raising production capacity.

Studies on capacity management for factories of nuclear fuel for research reactors. In: INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR ATLANTIC CONFERENCE, October 22-27, 2017, Belo Horizonte, MG. Proceedings... Rio de Janeiro, RJ: Associação Brasileira de Energia Nuclear, 2017.

Abstract: The use and the power of nuclear reactors for research and materials testing is increasing worldwide. That implies the demand for nuclear fuel for this kind of reactors is rising. Thus, the production facilities of this kind of fuel need reliable guidance on how to augment their production in order to meet the increasing demand efficiently, safely and keeping good quality. Focus is given to factories that produce plate type fuel elements loaded with LEU U3Si2-Al fuel, which are typically used in nuclear research reactors. Of the various production routes for this kind of fuel, we chose the route which uses hydrolysis of uranium hexafluoride. Raising the capacity of this kind of plants faces several problems, especially regarding safety against nuclear criticality. Some of these problems are briefly addressed. The new issue of the paper is the application of knowledge from the area of production administration to the fabrication of nuclear fuel for research reactors. A specific method for the increase in production capacity is proposed. That method was tested by means of discrete event simulation. The data were collected from the nuclear fuel factory at IPEN. The results indicated the proposed method achieved its goal as well as ways of raising production capacity in up to 50%.

DOI: 10.4236/wjnst.2016.64023

Abstract: Several fuel plants that supply nuclear research reactors need to increase their production capacity in order to meet the growing demand for this kind of nuclear fuel. After the enlargement of the production capacity of such plants, there will be the need of managing the new production level. That level is usually the industrial one, which poses challenges to the managerial staff. Such challenges come from the fact that several of those plants operate today on a laboratorial basis and do not carry inventory. The change to the industrial production pace asks for new actions regarding planning and control. The production process based on the hydrolysis of UF6 is not a frequent production route for nuclear fuel. Production planning and control of the industrial level of fuel production on that production route is a new field of studies. The approach of the paper consists in the creation of a mathematical linear model for minimization of costs. We also carried out a sensitivity analysis of the model. The results help in minimizing costs in different production schemes and show the need of inventory. The mathematical model is dynamic, so that it issues better results if performed monthly. The management team will therefore have a clearer view of the costs and of the new, necessary production and inventory levels.

Abstract: Nowadays the electrical energy was been used much on society. A method for getting electricity is through nuclear power plants, this power plant uses fission that occurs inside the UO2 pellets to generate thermal energy that will be transform into electric. The pellets production was made from enriched UF6 uses some techniques of reprocessing UF6 gas to UO2 powder. This reprocessing process done by wet route (Ammonium Diuranate ADU or Ammonium Uranium Carbonate AUC) or by dry route (Fluidized bed or GECO). With getting of UO2 powder is forwarded to metallurgy where this powder is compacted in cylindrical matrix so that powder take the desired shape, this green pellets are full of the empty spaces (porosity) for this it is sent to the sintering. The sintering consists of a joint of these particles of powders by means of the heating of this green pellets, coming arrive the melting temperature, the UO2 molecules melting each other so decrease the porosity and increase the density. For the production of fuel pellets the process all most used is wed route by means the AUC ,this process arrive created for replace the ADU because the AUC is a process where less rework for the pore geometry is required compared to DUA. The fluidized bed process is more used in small samples however, for a large amount it becomes unfeasible, moreover the dry route process require more robust materials because of the generation of HF that is highly corrosive and cannot used the UNH (uranyl nitrate hexahydrate) used for recycle materials discarded in manufacturing.

In: INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR ATLANTIC CONFERENCE, October 21-25, 2019, Santos, SP. Proceedings... Rio de Janeiro: Associação Brasileira de Energia Nuclear, 2019. p. 1617-1628.

Abstract: Radiopharmaceuticals are unique medicinal formulations containing radioisotopes and are used in nuclear medicine for diagnosis and/or therapy for chronic diseases such as cancer, alzheimer and cardiac disorders. The increase in the incidence of these diseases in the Brazilian population and the trend of increasing demand for radiopharmaceuticals motivated the elaboration of this work from a system dynamics perspective. The aim of this paper is to present a System Dynamic Model for simulating the interaction between demand, capacity, workforce and production of radiopharmaceuticals produced by IPEN. The validity of this model is verified by running in Vensim PLE software using historical data. The model was based on the generic structure of commodity markets and main variables were considered to represent the market polices. The preliminary model presented was able to capture the expected behavior of the industry of radiopharmaceuticals. Two alternative scenarios were developed, one to analyze the impacts of investment in infrastructure of IPEN and the other to investigate the workforce investment. As result, the model performed well in representing the behavior of the market. In addition, scenario tests showed that investment in infrastructure and workforce investment have a significant impact in the dynamic of the system.

In: INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR ATLANTIC CONFERENCE, October 21-25, 2019, Santos, SP. Proceedings... Rio de Janeiro: Associação Brasileira de Energia Nuclear, 2019. p. 5024-5035.

Abstract: The search for new materials for nuclear fuels has been developed over the last 50 years, with the main aim of increasing the fuel efficiency during the operation of the reactors. The need to increase the uranium density in fuels to compensate the reduction of enrichment proposes that the UMo alloy is one of the materials that presents better characteristics to be used as fuel: molybdenum is a material that retains the gamma phase of the uranium in low concentrations, which is the only stable phase of uranium under the irradiation conditions, besides having low thermal neutron absorption. Although more advanced studies already provide information on the interaction between UMo and the Al matrix, we still need to study how this material behaves during all processing steps for fuel fabrication. The present work has the objective of to deepen the technological knowledge about the stages of production of dispersion type nuclear fuel, including the comminution process of the UMo alloy. The alloy pulverization made by the hydriding-grinding-dehydriding technique still reveals a large number of unknowns in the process variables. Knowing some parameters already existent in the literature, it is possible to discuss the behavior of the hydriding process and envision improvements to optimize it as well as make it reproducible. Subsequent manufacturing steps for briquette and rolling were performed according to IPEN's expertise and the results indicate that the UMo alloy is mechanically doable and may prove to be a substitute fuel for the current U3Si2 with a higher uranium density.
