Estudo do comportamento de HMS-SP (Polipropileno com alta resistencia do fundido) sob condicoes de degradacao ambiental e acelerada / Study of HMS-PP (high melt strength polypropylene) behaviour under conditions of environmental and accelerated degradation . 2008. Dissertação (Mestrado) - Instituto de Pesquisas Energeticas e Nucleares - IPEN-CNEN/SP, Sao Paulo. 151 p. Orientador: Duclerc Fernandes Parra. DOI: 10.11606/D.85.2008.tde-25082009-155558

Abstract: Polypropylene (PP) is the most common thermoplastic resin of the plastic market due to its very interesting physical, chemical and processing properties at very low market price, however after its use the resin does not degrade in the environment or it degrades at very low rate. This study has the objective of comparing the environmental exposure of PP irradiated with 20 kGy and pristine PP. Dumbbell samples were manufactured by injection molding and exposed to the environment during 90 days; another one set was subjected to gamma irradiation at 20 kGy total dose and exposed at the same conditions too. The samples were characterized by mechanical testing, visual inspection, infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The irradiated samples, after environmental aging, showed oxidation and presence of cracks in samples of the PP 20 kGy.

Abstract: This paper presents a study on biocidal effect of polymer nanocomposite films of gamma irradiated polypropylene (PP) and silver nanoparticles. The modified polypropylene was obtained from isotactic polypropylene (iPP) in pellets form by irradiation with gamma rays in the presence of acetylene. A new morphology with long chain branching of PP and distinct rheology is obtained by this process. The blend of 50/50 wt neat PP and PP modified by gamma radiation were further mixed using a twin screw extruder. The AgNPs were infused into this polymer blend at different concentrations of: 0.1%; 0.25%; 05%; 1.0%; 1.0% (PVP), 2.0% and 4.0% by wt%. These polymer nanocomposites were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cytotoxicity test and Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion techniques. The bactericidal effect of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were assessed in detail.

Abstract: In recent years, antimicrobial packaging has attracted much attention from the food industry because of the increase in consumer demand for minimally processed, preservative-free-products. Different grades of polyethylene, LLDPE and LDPE play a major role in the film blowing industry and are widely used for packing applications. In our study, blown films of LLDPE / LDPE, and their blends were produced using a twin screw extruder. The combination of PEs as matrix, and silver nanoparticles with oleic acid solution, improved the AgNPs dispersion in the films. The films were evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDX), and Ecotoxicity. Further, the antibacterial properties of the films were investigated against Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) bacteria.

Abstract: Due to its versatility and low cost, polypropylene (PP) is one of the most widely used polymers in the world, consequently in research and development of new products. The polypropylene modified was prepared by gamma irradiation in acetylene at 12.5 kGy dose, technical polymer also known as high-melt-strength-polypropylene (HMSPP). It was mixed with montmorillonite (MMT) clay and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for bactericide activity. HMS-Polypropylene-clay -silver nanocomposites were manufactured using twin-screw extruders. Those materials were prepared by a melt mixing process via twin screw extrusion with a wide range of processing conditions. The polypropylene nanocomposites (PPNC) surfaces were exposed to gamma-radiation (60Co) source in presence of nitrogen as inert atmosphere at 1; 3; 5; 10; 20 and 50 kGy doses for modified the surfaces in order to enhance biocide activity. The samples surfaces were characterized by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDX) and evaluated by determination of bactericide effects. The results indicate the formation of structures predominantly intercalated of HMSPP nanocomposite. Contact tests for antibacterial activity of the hybrid polymer were applied against Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) bacteria. The irradiations on the samples surfaces were insufficient to promote activity on contact biocide tests.

Abstract: The objective of this work is to study the formation of nanogel and microgel in modified polypropylene (PP) and incorporation of silver nanoparticles. The PP in pellets was modified by gamma irradiation of pristine PP under a crosslinking atmosphere of acetylene in doses of 5, 12.5 and 20 kGy, followed by thermal treatment for radical recombination and annihilation of the remaining radicals. Thin film of polypropylene gel was obtained by extraction in boiling xylene for period of 12 hours at 138 °C, followed by decantation in beaker at room temperature of 25°C with the total volatilization of the xylene. Deposition of dried material on fine glass blades under agitation by settling process formed films containing nanosilver. The thin films of gel AgNPs formed of pristine PP, as well as, modified (i.e., irradiated) were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDX), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), X-Ray diffraction (DRX), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) other than determination of antibacterial activity. The PP morphology indicated the nanogels and microgel formation with increase of spherulites concentration and crystallinity at dose 12.5 kGy. Further, the antibacterial properties of the gel-AgNPs polypropylene were investigated against Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) bacteria.

Abstract: All polymers when exposed to the environment suffer diverses alterations due to the action of diverse factors such UV light, poluition, acid rain and others. In this study, the modified polypropylene by gamma irradiation (HMSPP – high melt strength polypropylene) was blended with Cloisite 20A to obtain HMSPP nanocomposite. The PP-g-MA, polypropylene graft maleic anhydride, was utilized as compatibilizant agent [1]. The samples were processed in twin-screw extruder and the dumbbell samples were obtained by thermopressing. The samples was exposed in environment by 6 months [1,2]. The chemical analysis was evaluate by Carbonyl Index (CI) and Melt Flow Index (MFI). With increase of time, the CI also increased, indicating the chain scission process, principally in the chain backbone, as observed in MFI, which value has increased very fast with increasing of time.

Abstract: Polyethylene is widely used for packing applications. Different grades of polyethylene, LLDPE and LDPE play a major role in the film blowing industry. The use of nanoclay in polymer matrices (non-polar) requires the use of a compatibilizer agent, ethylene graft maleic anhydride copolymer (PE-g-MA), which acts as a bridge for nanoclay-matrix-interaction. In our study, blown films of LLDPE, LDPE, and their blends were produced using a twin screw extruder. The combination of PEs as matrix, montmorillonite (MMT) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) intended to improve mechanical and thermal properties. Nanocomposites films with 1 wt% of montmorillonite and 0.5–1.0 wt% silver nanoparticles were prepared by blow extrusion and evaluated. Nanoclay intercalation/exfoliation degree was investigated by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mechanical and thermal properties were evaluated. The results showed optimum dispersion at intercalation/exfoliation levels for polyethylene nanocomposite (PENC), slight increasing in mechanical and especially improvement in thermal properties.

Abstract: The aim this study was to use nanocomposites of polypropylene (PP), montmorillonite (MMT) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), prepared by melt intercalation in a twin-screw extruder, as a food packaging bactericide material. The use of nanoclay and nanosilver as additives for polymer matrices requires, in some cases (with non-polar matrices) the use of a compatibilizer agent which will act as a bridge or permanent buffer for nanoclay-nanosilver-matrix interaction. As compatibilizer agent it has been used a propylene graft maleic anhydride copolymer (PP-g-MA). The nanocomposites were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-Rays diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and determination of antibacterial activity. The results indicate the formation of microstructures predominantly exfoliated. Further, the antibacterial properties of the films were investigated against Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) bacteria.

Abstract: In view of the intense interest in applications of silver nanoparticles in products for the medical field and in food preservation packaging due to their antimicrobial properties, the ecotoxicology of silver nanocomposites was evaluated in films. Test with the sea urchin Echinometra lucunter, to evaluate embryonic development and contamination by the action of silver and titanium nanoparticles in polyethylene nanocomposite films presents new results. The silver nanoparticle’s stability in polymeric materials can be enhanced by adding carriers, such as titanium dioxide and montmorillonite clay (MMT) without to producing one unfriendly material. For this research, low-density polyethylene (LDPE)/linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) were used processed in a twin-screw extruder, followed by gamma irradiation with 25 kGy and characterized by ecotoxicology assays, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDX), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and mechanical properties. The antibacterial properties of the LDPE films were investigated against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The gamma irradiation had an important effect in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles resulting in bactericidal activity and the death of 100% of the tested bacteria. The evaluation of the environment was considered with the ecotoxicological investigation carried out. The results indicated that the polymeric films with silver nanoparticles and TiO2 do not contaminate the environment and neither interfere with the larval development of Echinometra lucunter. The obtained materials can be used in various applications with antimicrobial properties.

Abstract: Antimicrobial activity represents a challenge for scientific community. Polymer processing conditions impose temperature limitation for stability of biocide nanoparticles. In the present work, we evaluate ZnO synthesized in laboratory, utilizing Zn(NO3)26H2O as precursor. The main proposal is to improve the incorporation of this nanoparticle on SEBS/PP resulting on biocide material films. Before application on SEBS/PP, the nanoparticles was tested by reduction of forming colony units (CFU)(%), Dynamical Light Scattering (DLS) and Zeta potential. On CFU tests, all samples showed biocide properties. The samples with concentration of 1% showed the higher biocide effect on E.coli bacteria, in comparison of lower concentrations. The obtained material biocide was processed on SEBS/PP for obtaining of polymeric films with biocide activity and the new material was characterized by: forming colony units (CFU)(%), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR).

Abstract: This work focuses of the influence of weathering factors UV radiation, humidity, and temperature on the structure and morphology poly(propylene) (PP) with high melt strength (HMSPP), also called poly(propylene) modified by irradiation. The HMSPP was prepared from isotactic poly(propylene) (iPP) in presence of acetylene at 110 kPa pressure and irradiated with g of 60Co at doses of 5, 12.5 and 20 kGy. It has been observed that HMSPP deteriorates in the weathering and thermal resistance, and the long-term stability of HMSPP, beyond substantial color changes. The aged samples were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), optical microscopy (OM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The optical microscopy shows different mechanisms on thermal and artificial weathering ageing. The ageing result under elevated temperature in HMSPPs exposed surfaces follows the order: HMSPP 20>12.5>5 kGy>iPP. The intense crack formation in surface exposed justifies thermooxidative degradation.
