Abstract:
In this work, the effectiveness of a mathematical approach to solve the spectral interferences involved in
the optical emission of two chemical species (neodymium and praseodymium) when using monochromators
with low-resolution in atomic spectrometry is evaluated. Although recent technological
advances have promoted spectrometers equipped with high-resolution monochromators, which have a
great instrumental capability in the separation of nearby lines and consequently avoid spectral interferences,
many laboratories still have old spectrometers installed with insufficient resolution to overcome such interferences. In order to evaluate a mathematical approach based on Lambert-Beer's
Law, the optical emissions of neodymium and praseodymium were monitored on a low-resolution (200
pm) flame atomic emission spectrometry (F-AES). These two elements were strategically chosen as an
application model because they exhibit similar physicochemical properties, joint occurrence in nature
and because they are increasingly used in the manufacture of super-magnets, a material increasingly
required by the high technology industry. The effectiveness of the mathematical approach was evaluated
in three different ways: (i) by recovery of the analytes in synthetic mixtures containing known quantities
of the species; (ii) by spike and recovery trials on a representative blend of dissolved samples and (iii) by
comparing the results obtained with another analytical method: Inductively coupled plasma optical
emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) with a higher spectral resolution. The results indicate the effectiveness
of this simple mathematical approach, allow the “survival” of instruments equipped with low-resolution
monochromators and demonstrate the applicability of this approach to spectral correction. In addition,
this work contributes an analytical method for the quantification of neodymium and praseodymium in
metallic alloy samples involved in the production of super-magnets, aiding in the strict quality control of
these materials.

Abstract:
Super-magnets, materials whose
strong magnetic activity is an
attractive differential for the hightech
industry, may have their
magnetic performance affected by
small variations in their chemical
composition. For example, the
neodymium and praseodymium
content can change the
physicochemical properties of the
permanent magnets. Aiming at a
strict chemical quality control, this
work developed an analytical
method to quantify the major elements in the materials involved in the production process of didymium (the
mixture of neodymium and praseodymium) super-magnets. The simultaneous determination of Nd
(401.225 nm), Pr (414.311 nm), Fe (259.837 nm) and B (249.678 nm) in three different sample types
(didymium oxide, metallic didymium and (Nd,Pr)-Fe-B alloy) was performed by sample dissolution in acidic
media, followed by instrumental measurements using an Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer. Linear calibration curves were obtained with high coefficient of determination (0.9983 ≤ R2
≤ 0.9999) and with appropriate limits for determining these elements at the percentage level, reaching
detection limits less than 0.07 cg g-1. The precision of the method was improved by weighing of the solutions
during all the dilution steps and was evaluated by the coefficient of variation associated to instrumental
precision (0.3 – 0.7%), method intermediate precision (1.9 – 3.1%) and also by the typical mass fraction
provided as uncertainty (0.04 – 0.20 cg g-1), reaching the pressing need to distinguish the content of the
rare earth elements in less than 1 cg g-1. The accuracy of the method was assessed by spiked and
recovery test (96-104% for spikes equal to or greater than 0.50 cg g-1) and also by the use of different
analytical methods, involving the participation of other laboratories, obtaining an acceptable degree of
agreement (85 – 107%).

Abstract:
Present in motors, electric turbines and data storage devices (hard disk), magnets are indispensable in
the manufacture of computers, televisions, cell phones, smart watches and several modern electronic
devices. The chemical composition of the magnet directly influences its magnetic performance and
consequently impacts the performance of the products with which it is associated. In this context, the
knowledge of the majority chemical composition of these materials contributes to an efficient quality
control in the act of production and helps the producers of the high-technology industry to select the
magnets in order to maintain a uniformity of these materials. Although there are several types of magnets,
those that use rare earth elements generally have strong magnetic activity, and are often called super-magnets.
Among the rare earth elements, the mixture of neodymium and praseodymium (didymium) is
widely used in metal alloys together with the elements iron and boron for its performance as a supermagnet.
The (Nd,Pr)FeB alloy production consists, in summary, to obtain metallic didymium by electrolytic
reduction of didymium oxide (mixture of neodymium and praseodymium oxides) followed by iron and
boron elements incorporation. The chemical composition control is important to avoid undesirable phases,
such alpha-iron, and to control the microstructure formation during the alloy manufacturing step. The
chemical composition range must be optimized such that minimizes the use of rare earth elements (Nd
and Pr). In this context, this work evaluated the best instrumental conditions for the determination of alloy
elements by ICP OES. Interference studies were carried out and the developed method was validated
through interlaboratory tests and addition and recovery tests.

Abstract:
The outsourcing informal home practices adopted in jewelry and fashion jewelry chain can cause toxic substance elimination in the effluents and raise a concern for its environmental impact. This study evaluates if this informal work alters the concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTEs: As, Cd, Cr total and Cr-VI, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sn, and Zn) in the sewage network. The sanitary sewage samples (n = 540) were collected in 15 manholes during two campaigns in three different areas of Limeira-SP, Brazil (industrial area, with informal work and without known industrial/informal activity). The sewage sludge (n = 12), raw (n = 12), and treated sewage (n = 12) were collected in two wastewater treatment plants (WWT: AS and TATU) operating with different treatment process. The PTE determination was performed by ICP-OES, direct mercury analysis, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Cr-VI, Cu, Ni, and Zn were the only elements above the quantification limit. Four samples exceeded Cu or Zn values permitted to be discharged into sewage system; however, the concentration average was lower than that established by Brazilian legislation. A difference was found between values above and below the 75th percentile for campaign and total organic carbon values (p < 0.015). The AS-treated sewage presented low concentrations of Cu (p < 0.05), Zn (p = 0.02), and Ni (p = 0.01) compared to treated sewage from TATU. In the sludge samples, the Cu means exceeded the limits of the Brazilian legislation (1500 mg kg(-1)) and the Zn results were very close to the limits (2800 mg kg(-1)). The heterogeneity of the results can indicate the sporadic nature of the PTE's sanitary disposal. PTEs used in jewelry and fashion jewelry chain may precipitate on the sludge, where presented high concentrations of Cu and Zn which require controlled destination.
