Abstract:
The 2XXX Al alloys are characterized by their superior mechanical properties resulting
from alloying elements and precipitation hardening treatments. The AA2524-T3 alloy was developed
to replace the AA2024-T3 alloy in the aerospace industry. However, both alloys present many
intermetallic particles (IMCs) in their microstructure, and this is the main reason for their high
susceptibility to localized corrosion (such as pitting and stress corrosion cracking). Despite the
similarities between these alloys (e.g., chemical composition and type of intermetallics) the literature
comparing their properties is scarce and focuses mainly on their mechanical properties, not their
corrosion resistances. In this investigation, the corrosion resistance of the AA2524-T3 alloy was
compared to the AA2024-T3 alloy. The microstructure of both alloys was analyzed by Scanning
Electron Microscopy before and after immersion in the test electrolyte, and the number and area
fraction of intermetallics of each alloy was determined. The corrosion resistance of both alloys was
monitored as a function of exposure time by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and the results
were fitted using electrical equivalent circuits. The AA2524-T3 alloy presented not only higher
impedance values but also less corroded areas than the AA2024-T3 alloy.

Abstract:
2xxx Al alloys are particularly sensitive to localized corrosion in chloride environments
and in order to maintain their integrity, minimize maintenance needs and repairs, and to maximize
component life, protective treatments are required.
Anodizing is an electrochemical process based on the growth of the Al oxide layer by applying
anodic potentials. One of the alternatives is tartaric/sulphuric acid (TSA) anodizing, which is
environmentally compliant and provides corrosion resistance properties, compatible with the
requirements of the aerospace industry with appropriate paint adhesion.
In this study, AA2524-T3 specimens were anodized in a tartaric-sulfuric acid bath (TSA) and
subsequently protected by application of a hybrid sol–gel coating. The sol–gel coating was prepared
using a solution with high water content (58 %v/v) and obtained by the hydrolysis and condensation
of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS). The corrosion
resistance evaluation of both unsealed and coated samples was carried out in a sodium chloride
solution by EIS as a function of immersion time. The results were also fitted using electrical
equivalent circuits.

Abstract:
The aluminum alloys of series 7XXX have excellent mechanical properties combined with low density and are often used in the aeronautic industry. However, their susceptibility to localized corrosion requires the use of protective coatings to ensure their long-term life. In the aircraft industry, the anodization process is an effective corrosion control method. Besides, the anodized layer sealing treatment of parts that are not used with coatings, provide further protection. However, both processes, anodization and sealing, generally employ baths containing Cr (VI) ions. These are highly toxic to the environment and carcinogenic. In this work, the AA7475-T761 alloy was anodized in a solution of tartaric-sulfuric acid (TSA) and then the anodic layer was hydrothermally sealed in aqueous solutions, either with or without the addition of Ce (III) ions. The effect of sealing time on the corrosion protection of the anodic layer was investigated for periods of sealing corresponding to 2.5 min, 5 min, 7.5 min and 10 min. The corrosion resistance of the anodized alloy samples was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) as a function of exposure time to a sodium chloride electrolyte. Higher impedances were associated with anodic layers hydrothermally sealed for 7.5 min and 10 min in Ce (III) ions containing solution. Surface observation was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the results indicated that hydrothermal treatments in solution with Ce (III) ions leads to anodic layers with decreased porosity.

Abstract:
Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining technique, which has numerous
advantages over conventional fusion techniques, such as automation and
reproducibility, environmentally friendly, and capability to weld large thicknesses
in a single pass.
AA2024 are widely used in the aerospace industry due to their properties
as lightweight, high specific strength and durability. However, they are prone to
localized corrosion due to its high amount of intermetallics. New anodizing and
sealing processes have been studied due to the environmental and health
problems related to the sealing treatment containing hexavalent chromium ions.
This has encouraged the search for new processes for surface treatment of
metals. Recent studies are pointing towards tartaric-sulphuric anodizing, as a
viable alternative for the corrosion protection of aluminum alloys, including
surface treatments with cerium ions. Other promising method to protect the
exposed metal surface is to use eco-friendly alternative corrosion inhibitors in
combination with a barrier coating system. Sol–gel coatings have also been
extensively studied as potential pre-treatments not associated to toxic residues for
aluminum alloys surface preparation prior to paint. It has been demonstrated an
efficient alternative for replacement of the chromate technology.
In this study, friction stir welded samples were anodized and then sealed
in an aqueous solution with the addition of cerium ions at 70 °C. The effect of Ce
on the characteristics of the surface film formed, such as morphology and
corrosion resistance, was investigated by SEM and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Samples unsealed or hydrothermally sealed were also tested for
comparison. The EIS results showed that the addition of Ce (III) ions improved
the corrosion resistance of the AA 2024-T3 TSA anodized and hydrothermal
sealed.

Abstract:
To protect Al alloys from corrosion, standard procedures in the aerospace industry use chromium-based acid anodizing with subsequent
post-treatment steps also containing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) ions. However, environmental and health related concerns associated with
Cr(VI) have encouraged the search for new surface treatments providing effective corrosion protection without the drawback of generating
toxic residues. In this investigation, a hydrothermal treatment in aqueous solution with cerium ions is proposed as a post-treatment for
tartaric-sulfuric acid (TSA) anodizing, and its effects on the AA2524-T3 alloy corrosion resistance investigated. The effect of Ce on the
characteristics of the surface film formed, such as morphology and corrosion resistance, is investigated by scanning electron microscopy and
electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results show that the hydrothermal treatment in solution containing Ce(III) ions presents
a less stable behavior than the treatment in boiling water. However, the results of the EIS experiments show recovery of the protective
properties of the system, indicating that some self-healing properties must be imparted to the system.

Abstract:
The effect of unequal levels of deformation and fragmentation on the electrochemical response of friction
stir welded AA2024-T3 has been investigated using electron backscatter diffraction, scanning electron
microscopy, global and localized electrochemical techniques. The friction stir welding process introduced
unequal distribution and fragmentation of coarse intermetallic particles, such that more clusters of these
particles were present in the thermomechanically affected zone of the weld. This resulted in a higher
susceptibility to severe localized corrosion in this region when compared with the others. Results from
electrochemical measurements using a microcell could not be clearly correlated with the corrosion
behaviour because no significant differences were observed using these techniques. On the other hand,
LEIS and SVET results were in agreement and correlated with the corrosion evolution at the surfaces of
the tested samples.

Abstract:
AA2524 is a relatively new brand of aluminum alloy designed to build lightweight structural components in aerospace industry. To be employed in aircrafts, high strength Al alloys need to be protected from corrosion by a robust protection system. One of the steps applied in the protection protocol is anodizing, which is known to greatly improve the corrosion resistance of Al alloys. In the present investigation, a sol-gel hybrid layer was applied as a post-treatment step for anodized AA2524 and the corrosion resistance of the system evaluated by means of EIS measurements and salt-spray tests. The anodizing process was performed in a tartaric-sulfuric acid (TSA) bath, which is more environmentally friendly than the traditional chromic acid anodizing baths, and the sol–gel solution was prepared by mixing tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-glycidyloxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) precursors in a solution with high water content. For comparison reasons, TSA anodized samples were also hydrothermally sealed in boiling deionized water. The results of both EIS and salt-spray tests demonstrated superior corrosion resistance for the anodized samples post-treated with the hybrid sol-gel layer. Electrical equivalent circuit fitting of the EIS data indicated that the hybrid sol-gel layer strongly hinders electrolyte penetration through the porous layer, better protecting the underlying substrate.

Abstract:
In the aircraft industry, anodizing and posttreatment steps use Cr (VI) compounds,
which, despite offering good corrosion resistance and self‐healing properties, are
highly toxic and carcinogenic. Ce compounds are recognized as efficient corrosion
inhibitors for Al alloys, and several works report self‐healing ability for these
chemicals. In this investigation, the corrosion resistance of Alclad AA2024‐T3 alloy
anodized in tartaric‐sulphuric acid (TSA) bath and posttreated in a solution comprising
cerium nitrate without and with hydrogen peroxide was evaluated. The purpose is to
investigate the potentiality of using hydrothermal treatment in Ce nitrate solution as
candidate to replace Cr (VI) posttreatment. The aim is to provide a posttreatment step
which, while improving the corrosion resistance, does not plug the mouths of the
pores maintaining the adhesion properties of the porous anodic layer. Microstructural
characterization was carried out by SEM‐EDS whereas corrosion resistance was evaluated
by EIS. The surface analysis showed that the posttreatments, all performed at
50°C, kept the open structure of the pores. EIS analysis showed that the
posttreatments performed in the H2O2 solution for short immersion times were the
most effective in improving the corrosion resistance of the samples, whereas electrical
equivalent circuit (EEC) fitting of the data indicated sealing of the porous layer
during the immersion of the different samples in the test solution. SEM‐EDS analysis
of the samples posttreated in the H2O2 containing solution, prior and after the corrosion
test, showed the presence of Ce oxy‐hydroxide randomly deposited on the sample
surface, indicating that Ce could be incorporated/stored in the anodic layer.

Abstract:
aeroespacial, devido as boas propriedades mecânicas e baixa densidade. As propriedades mecânicas destas ligas
Além disso, a caracterização microestrutural revelou grãos alongados

Abstract:
Al-Cu-Li alloys present advantages in relation to conventional Al-Cu alloys in applications for aerospace industry due to their low density and good mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of these alloys depend on their microstructure and this is affected by the thermomechanical treatments to which the materials are submitted during their fabrication process. In the present study, the effects of T8 and T851 thermomechanical treatments on the corrosion resistance of the AA2198 alloy were compared. The main hardening precipitate in Al-Cu-Li alloys is the T1 phase, (Al2CuLi). The presence of this precipitate in the AA2198-T8 and T851 alloys was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The microstructure of both alloys was evaluated by Vickers micro hardness and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) measurements and the results obtained were correlated. The results showed higher density of T1 phase for the T851 condition. Besides, microstructural characterization revealed elongated grains for the T8 condition and equiaxed grains for T851 condition. These results were related to the corrosion behavior of both alloys by immersion and gel visualization tests.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The application of laser texturing aims to modify the surface without changing its chemical
composition. These alterations can be evaluated through mechanical, physical or chemical
tests. Texturing can be applied to improve efficiency in industrial processes, such as the
flowability of materials, by applying laser texturing to the internal surfaces of components.
This work aims to evaluate the influence of texturing parameters in the flow process of
industrial batchers. UNS S32101 lean duplex stainless steel (LDSS) samples were used for
the tests. For laser texturing of the surfaces, laser of Yb was used, with a wavelength of
1064 nm (infrared), using the scanning speed of 140 mm/s and pulse duration of 150 ns.
Two sets of textured samples were produced: with a frequency of 50 kHz and 2 kHz. In both
frequencys, the power(%) was set at 100, 60 and 20. The effect of texturing was analyzed
through microstructural characterization with tests of contact angle, roughness and
scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract:
The 3D printing on an industrial scale describe the one more advanced techniques. In the
manufacturing process technology the model is created by successively layering material
from a digital 3D model. The 3D manufacturing process allows obtaining complex geometry,

the produced components is necessary, since the parameters influence in surface
roughness, microhardness and corrosion resistance. Samples of Ti6Al4V built with the same
laser speed, hatch distance and layer thickness but different laser power were analyzed. The
variation in laser power influenced the roughness and corrosion resistance of the samples.

Abstract:

Localized corrosion resistance of dissimilar aluminum alloys joined by Friction Stir Welding (FSW).

Abstract:
2XXX and 7XXX high strength aluminum alloys are the most used materials for
structural parts of aircrafts due to their high strength/weight ratio. Their joining procedure is an
engineering challenge since they present low weldability. Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a joining
technology developed in the early 90´s. It is a solid-state welding process, without the use of fillers
or gas shield, that eliminates conventional welding defects and has been considered of great interest
for application in the aircraft industry. FSW of aluminum alloys results in four regions of different
microstructures, specifically: the base material (BM), the heat affected zone (HAZ), the thermomechanically
affected zone (TMAZ), and the nugget zone (NZ). The complex microstructure of the
weld region leads to higher susceptibility to localized corrosion as compared to the BM even when
similar alloys are joined. The welding of dissimilar alloys in its turn results in even more complex
microstructures as materials with intrinsically different composition, microstructures and
electrochemical properties are put in close contact. Despite the great interest in FSW, up to now,
only few corrosion studies have been carried out for characterization of the corrosion resistance of
dissimilar Al alloys welded by FSW. The aim of this study is to investigate the corrosion behavior
of aluminum alloy 2024-T3 (AA2024-T3) welded to aluminum alloy 7475-T761 (AA7475-T761)
by FSW. The evaluation was performed in 0.01 mol.L-1 solution by means of open circuit potential
measurements, polarization techniques and surface observation after corrosion tests.

Microstructural characterization and corrosion behavior of a commercial friction stir welded AA2024-T3.

Abstract:
Friction Stir Welding (FSW) arises as a great development by removing rivets,
fasteners and lap joints areas, consequently, decreasing the aircraft weight.
However, during the welding process, the plastic deformation and heat
generation at the joint and surrounding areas lead to three distinct
microstructural zones, namely, nugget or stir zone (SZ), thermo-mechanically
affected zone (TMAZ), heat affected zone (HAZ), besides the base metal (BM). In
these zones the microstructure of the material can be profoundly modified and
localized corrosion phenomena can be more easily developed, which can be
enhanced by local galvanic coupling due to changes in the microstructure as
grain refinement and recrystallization, changes in the grain boundaries,
dissolution and precipitation of hardening precipitates and dispersóides. In the
present work, a commercial friction stir welded AA2024-T3 had its microstructure
characterized by Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) technique and optical
microscopy (OM). The corrosion behavior was investigated by exfoliation
corrosion (EXCO) test and the intergranular corrosion susceptibility according to
ASTM G110-97. After all tests, the samples were observed by scanning electron
microscopy (SEM). EBSD results revealed the evolution of microstructure as a
result of FSW. The base metal showed elongated grains along the rolling direction
with a pancake-like non-recrystallized structure. The SZ undergone dynamic
recrystallization showing finer equiaxed grains as a result of a significant plastic
deformation and heating during the welding process. The TMAZ of the advancing
side showed recrystallized finer grains, while the TMAZ of the retreating side
showed coarse grains. Finally, the HAZ of both advancing and retreating sides
showed grains typically elongated caused by the thermal input. The EXCO and
intergranular tests showed a more intense attack in the TMAZ of the retreating
side in agreement with the corrosion morphology observed by SEM.
