Architectural design of a mobile irradiation unit for the treatment of industrial effluents in Brazil. In: INTERNATIONAL MEETING ON RADIATION PROCESSING, 19th, April 1-5, 2019, Strasbourg, France. Proceedings... 2019.

Abstract: The Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN-CNEN/SP) decided to develop and build a mobile beam irradiation unit for the treatment of industrial effluents. The mobile unit will have as one of its main advantages the possibility of treating effluents in the place where the source is located, eliminating costs and bureaucratic problems associated with the transportation of waste, besides publicizing the technology in several places in Brazil. To implement the project, IPEN-CNEN/SP has been consolidating partnerships with national and international companies. The resources for the development of the unit have been supplied by the Brazilian Innovation Agency (FINEP) and International Atomic Energy Agency, financing the IAEA TC Project BRA1035 – Mobile electron beam accelerator to treat and recycle industrial effluents. The Institute hired a specialized company (Truckvan Industry) for the unit design and development. Several meetings have been realized with the company and the IAEA experts aiming the compatibility of the design and the exchange of information necessary for the project development. Regarding the mobile lab, several layout options have been developed to better meet the needs of each device and its users. The layout has been discussed with the objective of facilitating the maintenance of the equipment; the well-being and ergonomics of operators; optimization of spacing and also to make compatible the need for the presence of equipment and space for operators. Thus, several studies have been prepared to allow the discussion between the areas involved and to optimize the project, as well as the visualization of the spaces available. In this paper is presented the approach adopted for the architectural design of a mobile irradiation unit in Brazil.

In: WORLD CONGRESS ON INDUSTRIAL PROCESS TOMOGRAPHY, 8th, September 26-29, 2016, Foz do Iguaçu, PR. Proceedings... International Society for Industrial Process Tomography, 2016. p. 1-7.

Abstract: In this paper, we compare different industrial tomography algorithms to present the result of gamma scanning as a two-dimensional image of density distribution. In two-dimensional gamma scanning, an unconventional irradiation geometry is used and consequently many classic image reconstruction algorithms cannot be used. We tested two iterative reconstruction methods: ART (Algebraic Reconstruction Technique) and MART (Multiplicative Algebraic Reconstruction Technique). The iteration steps of both methods were intercalated with various filters: mean filter, median filter, anisotropic diffusion and total variation. The use of these filters greatly improves the quality of reconstruction. We report the obtained results.

Developing an electrical power system of a mobile electron beam accelerator to treat wastewater and industrial effluents. In: INTERNATIONAL MEETING ON RADIATION PROCESSING, 19th, April 1-5, 2019, Strasbourg, France. Proceedings... 2019.

Abstract: The treatment of wastewater and industrial effluents by electron beam irradiation is a promising technique, however, not very widespread in Brazilian territory. The design and construction of a mobile unit by the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute, containing an electron beam accelerator of 700 keV and 20 kW is innovative to demonstrate the effects and positive results of this technology. The aim is to transfer the mobile unit to several companies with interest in liquid waste treatment, connect to the industry electrical system and start the ionization treatment process through electron beam. The mobile unit connection to the local electrical system may be a challenge due to the great diversity of voltages and distances involved, as well as the large injections of harmonic content generated by the electron beam accelerator that can affect sensitive loads in the industrial system. In this work, an analysis of the electrical power system of the mobile unit was made, regarding the interruption capacity, selectivity protection and adequate short circuit levels, in order to assure a greater reliability in the operation. At the end, the control panel of the mobile unit, simulations and measurements were carried out at the 1.5 MeV and 37.5 kW electron beam accelerator, installed in the Radiation Technology Center, demonstrating the necessity of applying a filter to reduce the measured harmonic distortion. The analysis of the mobile unit electrical power system was made, in order to assure a greater reliability in the operation.

Abstract: Paint is a prevalent type of surface of coating well known to most people. It is an easy-to-apply product, with excellent physical and chemical resistance and a wide range of applications. The function of a paint is to protect and beautify amongst other properties. Paints are formed using five components: resin, pigments, fillers, solvents and additives. This work deals with a specific type of paint, composed of a water-based acrylic emulsion, whose film formation is by coalescence and used to coat walls and other surfaces. The aim of this innovative research was to evaluate the effect of the addition of cellulosic dispersion of waste paper tissues treated by electron beam irradiation to an acrylic emulsion-based paint. The methodology used was a case study carried out at the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute that consisted of adding aqueous dispersions of cellulosic wipes with mass concentrations varying from 0.1% to 10% in deionized water, and treated by electron beam processing with absorbed doses from 5 kGy to 50 kGy. The results obtained followed the parameters of the Abrafati Sectorial Quality Program. The main sample parameters analyzed were specific density, which reached an average of 1.35 g/cm3 ; and covering power, whose value of 93.55% was above the specified limit (minimum of 90%). Among other results obtained, improvements in appearance, applicability and functionality were significant. It was concluded that this research constitutes an incremental improvement to the acrylic emulsion paints segment, and environmental sustainability, through the reuse of cellulosic tissue residues.

Abstract: Electron beam accelerators are used in many applications, such as basic physical research, chemistry, medicine, molecular biology, microelectronics, agriculture and industry, among others. The majority of the accelerators have electrons from a hot tungsten filament and their energy is increased as it passes through an electric field in the vacuum chamber. For industrial purposes, the most common model is Dynamitron®. At IPEN-CNEN/SP, there is an electron beam accelerator Dynamitron® Type (Manufactured by RDI - Radiation Dynamics Inc., 1978) model DC1500/25/4. The technology applied was available in the 60´s and 70´s, but, nowadays is obsolete. Moreover, there are not original spare parts for this equipment any longer. The aim of this work is to develop a nationalized automated operation system for the accelerator, to replace the old equipment and allow extending the useful life of the accelerator for around ten years.

In: WORLD CONGRESS ON INDUSTRIAL PROCESS TOMOGRAPHY, 8th, September 26-29, 2016, Iguassu Falls, PR, Brazil. Proceedings... ISIPT - International Society for Industrial Process Tomography, 2016. p. 1-8.

Abstract: Gamma scanning is a nuclear inspection technique used to troubleshoot industrial equipments in refineries and petrochemicals plants around the world. In this technique, a sealed radiation source and detector move along an equipment, and the intensity readouts generate a density profile of the equipment. The simplicity of this technique has made it popular in many countries. In recent decades, many improvements have been proposed, from automated scanning to wireless detectors, new collecting software and improved data presentation. However, the technique concept has not changed since it was proposed decades ago, and the results still consist on a one-dimensional mean density profile of the target. The present work, developed in a master degree project, describes a new approach for gamma scanning. The innovative technology shows the result of a gamma scan as a two-dimensional density distribution plot. Clearly, a two-dimensional image reveals more features of the equipment under analysis, representing an advance in the non-destructive testing, as many problems that could not be troubleshooted using conventional gamma scanning can now be seen with this imaging technique. The innovative technology, patent pending, received an award from a recognized petroleum company.

In: INTERNATIONAL MEETING ON RADIATION PROCESSING, 19th, April 1-5, 2019, Strasbourg, France. Proceedings... 2019.

Abstract: A catalyst is a substance that changes the rate of a reaction. In the petroleum industry, the catalysts are commonly used for Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) and Hydro Catalytic Cracking (HCC), each of them applied in a specific stage. These catalysts are used to facilitate the molecular chains cracking, which will generate a mixture of hydrocarbons. However, the catalyst gradually loses its activity, either by changing its original molecular structure or by its contamination from other petroleum molecules. The application of ionizing radiation (medium-energy electron beam) over these spent catalysts was studied to contribute the extraction of metals or rare-earths of high added-value. Tests conducted with HCC catalysts were used the technique of electron beam irradiation (1.3 MeV) and had as a subject the extraction of Molybdenum. Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis was performed on a Shimadzu EDX-720/800HS and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis on a Rigaku MultiFlex. Electron beam irradiation had a positive contribution if compared to traditional thermal and chemical methods. In temperature around 750°C, HCC irradiated catalysts of the lower region have an extraction of Molybdenum (MoO3) yield twice higher compared to non-irradiated ones, in other words 57.65% and 26.24%, respectively.
