Anomalous transport of light at the phase transition to localization: strong dependence with incident angle. Photonics Research, v. 6, n. 10, p. 929-942, 2018. DOI: 10.1364/PRJ.6.000929

Abstract: There has been a growing interest in disordered optical media in recent years due to their potential applications in solar collectors, random lasers, light confinement, and other advanced photonic functions. This paper studies the transport of light for different incidence angles in a strongly disordered optical medium composed of core-shell TiO2@Silica nanoparticles suspended in an ethanol solution. A decrease of optical conductance and an increase of absorption near the input border are reported when the incidence angle increases. The specular reflection, measured for the photons that enter the sample, is lower than the effective internal reflection undergone by the coherently backscattered photons in the exact opposite direction, indicating a nonreciprocal propagation of light. This study represents a novel approach in order to understand the complex physics involved at the phase transition to localization.

Abstract: Silica aerogel is a lightweight material, well known for its good mechanical and thermal characteristics, but its optical properties have received less attention, because it is weakly scattering. Here we present for the first time the lasing properties and their complex dynamics of silica aerogel doped with R6G. It is shown that the Q factors of the lasing modes determine the operation of the laser, being either resonant or ASE-lasing. For resonant lasing, the number of resonators is easily varied and the number of modes in a single resonator and their emission frequency can be dynamically adjusted, making this a truly versatile photonics material.

Improving performance in ytterbium-erbium doped waveguide amplifiers through scattering by large silicon nanostructures. Journal of Alloys and Compounds, v. 794, p. 120-126, 2019. DOI: 10.1016/j.jallcom.2019.04.141

Abstract: Optical waveguide amplifiers have seen a growing interest in the last years due to their applications in telecommunication. This paper reports a notable increase of the relative gain of Yb3þ/Er3þ codoped Bi2O3 eGeO2 waveguides by introducing disorder in the form of silicon nanostructure as scattering centers. A photoluminescence enhancement of about 10 times for the 520 nm and 1530 nm emission bands is observed in the waveguides when the silicon nanostructures are introduced. Increase of the Yb3þ/Er3þ effective absorption, due to the scattering provided by the silicon nanostructures, and decrease of [Biþ], caused by the introduction of silicon, are proposed as likely causes for the luminescence and gain enhancement. The pedestal waveguides were fabricated by RF-sputtering followed by optical lithography and reactive ion etching. RF-sputtering of silicon together with Yb/Er and Bi2O3eGeO2 glass, followed by heat treatment, produced Yb3þ/Er3þ codoped Bi2O3eGeO2 waveguides with silicon nanostructures of size 25e30 nm. The resulting relative gain reached 5.5 dB/cm at 1542 nm representing an enhancement of 50% with respect to waveguides without silicon nanostructures. This strategy of introducing appropriate disorder may open an avenue for designing and manufacture of novel photonic devices in this emerging field of integrated optics.

Abstract: This paper reports for, the first time, the influence of silicon nanocrystals on the photoluminescence and optical gain of Yb3+/Er3+ codoped Bi2O3–GeO2 waveguides for amplification at 1542 nm. Pedestal waveguides were fabricated by RF- sputtering followed by optical lithography and reactive ion etching. RF-sputtering followed by heat treatment produced silicon nanocrystals with average size of 8 nm and resulted in a photoluminescence enhancement of about 10 times for the 520 nm and 1530 nm emission bands. Abstract: Understanding light absorption in random lasers and its distribution within the scattering gain media is a key issue to increase the lasers’ efficiency. Here we compare monodispersed and polydispersed powders of Nd3+:YVO4 and investigate the influence of the powder size distribution on scattering mean free path, absorption volume and, eventually, the lasers efficiency. The highest efficiency is achieved for polydispersed powders and we conjecture that these polydispersed powders, composed of pockets containing small grains trapped between large particles, present locally higher pump power densities than the monodispersed powders. We establish a figure of merit, based on measurable powder parameters, that agrees well with the obtained output power results of the monodispersed and polydispersed samples.

Abstract: We study the light–matter coupling by Raman scattering in colloidal suspensions composed by core–shell TiO2@Silica (Rutile@Silica) nanoparticles suspended in ethanol and water solutions. Strong enhancement of the Raman signal per particle is observed as [TiO2@Silica] is increased above a threshold, being stronger in ethanol suspensions. Moreover, above this [TiO2@Silica] threshold, the optical transmittance of the ethanol suspension starts to be considerably lower than in water, despite scattering strength being higher in water. These results are attributed to localization of light induced by strong correlation in the scatterers’ position as a consequence of the long-range Coulomb interaction between the TiO2@Silica nanoparticles. Light diffraction in TiO2@Silica suspensions (water and ethanol) shows strong correlation in the scatterers’ position (structure seemingly cubic), being stronger in ethanol than in water (longer-range Coulomb interaction). As a result, we demonstrate in these colloidal suspensions for the first time, to our knowledge, strongly enhanced light–matter coupling through correlation-induced localization with klT much higher than unity and in an ordered colloidal-photonic structure. This strong enhancement of light–matter coupling by localization of light opens an avenue for manufacturing powerful sensing tools.

Abstract: In this work we review the recent advances in pedestal waveguide amplifier fabrication. The improvement of conventional photolithography and plasma etching methods brings advantages that benefit light guiding and reduce propagation losses, mainly in the 3rd telecommunication windows (λ~1550 nm). Yb3+/Er3+ codoped Bi2O3-GeO2 thin films, with and without Si nanostructures, are obtained by RF Magnetron sputtering deposition and are used as core layer of 500 nm height in the pedestal waveguides. Choosing an appropriate amount of these silicon nanostructures inside the rare-earth waveguides we achieve pump light scattering and at the same time very little scattering at the signal wavelength. The overall effect is again enhancement of 50% thus opening possibilities for potential applications in integrated optics.

Abstract: Random lasers hold the potential for cheap, coherent light sources that can be miniaturized and molded into any shape with several other added benefits such as speckle-free imaging and cancer detectin, however, they require improvements specifically in terms of efficiency. This talk details for the first time a strategy for increasing the efficiency of a random laser that consists in using smaller particles, trapped between large particles to serve as absorption and gain centers whereas the large particles control mainly the light diffusion into the sample. In order to to determine the samples’ transport mean free path, fill fractions, laser efficiency and the average photon path lengths inside the scattering medium for backscattered pump photons, measurements of backscattering cone, sample absorption, reflection and laser emission are done. A record slope efficiency of 50% is reached by optimizing pump photon diffusion and absorption in a powder pellet composed by a polydispersed particle size distribution (smaller particles between bigger ones) from a grinded and sieved 1.33 mol% Nd:YVO4 crystal with mean particle size of 54 micrometers.

Abstract: In the last two decades, many experiments were conducted in self-organization of nanocrystals into two- and three-dimensional (3D) superlattices and the superlattices were synthesized and characterized by different techniques, revealing their unusual properties. Among all characterization techniques, X-ray diffraction (XRD) is the one that has allowed the confirmation of the 3D superlattice formation due to the presence of sharp and intense diffraction peaks. In this work, we study self-organized superlattices of quantum dots of PbS prepared by dropping a monodispersed colloidal solution on a glass substrate at different temperatures. We showed that the intensity of the low-angle XRD peaks depends strongly on the drying time (substrate temperature). We claim that the peaks are originated from the 3D superlattice. Scanning electron microscopy images show that this 3D superlattice (PbS quantum dots) is formed in flake’s shape, parallel to the substrate surface and randomly oriented in the perpendicular planes.
