Abstract: Zirconium dioxide, or zirconia, is a common and useful ceramic with a wide range of applications, from fuel cells to odontology. Its phase diagram is simple and well understood, having a structure which is monoclinic at temperatures up to 1500 K, tetragonal up to 2700 K and cubic up to 3000 K. Zirconia is rarely used in its pure form, being typically doped with Y2O3, MgO or TiO2, and in this regime its phase diagram becomes much more complex. In this context, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) can provide a detailed atomistic description of the phase diagram of this system, accurately describing its stable phases and transition regions. In this work, 3 mol-% Y2O3 (3YSZ) crystals doped with different Ti contents were studied at the density-functional level. For Ti contents varying from 0 to 30 at%, a global search algorithm was first used to explore the 0 K potential-energy surface and determine the most stable sites for the added Ti atoms. It was found that, at low Ti compositions XTi, small TiO2 clusters form, followed by TiO2 channels and infinite TiO2 planes at larger XTi values, and that the highest stability is achieved at 9%Ti. AIMD simulations within the isothermal-isobaric NPT ensemble were then performed to characterize the temperature-dependent phase changes as a function of the Ti content, where it was found that the Ti-doped structures presented considerably smaller volume changes near the phase-change critical temperatures. These findings suggest that YSZ materials doped with a small amount of Ti are both energetically and kinetically more stable than the undoped counterparts, in the ideal proportion of 3% TiO2 for every 1% Y2O3 doping.

Abstract: Yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) is used for dental prosthodontics, however, it can present accelerated tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation in oral environment. The aim of this study was to compare the behavior of a Y-TZP synthesized in laboratory by the coprecipitation method to a commercial Y-TZP, after hydrothermal aging in pressurized reactor (150oC/ 35 hours). The discs were sintered at 1520oC for two hours. The kinetics curve of phase transformation was determined through the data collect by XRD diffractograms treated by the Rietveld method. The experimental and commercial control groups did not present monoclinic phase. After 35 hours of aging, the experimental group presented 69% of monoclinic phase compared to 67% for the commercial group. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images suggested that the commercial group presented heterogeneity of grain size and that the experimental group was more homogeneous. All groups presented superficial degradation process

Abstract: The addition of titania to zirconia dental implants has been considered a promising choice to improve its bioactivity. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different sintering conditions on the microstructure, density, optical properties and flexural strength of a 3Y-TZP/TiO2 dental ceramic based on zirconia with two different titania contents (7.5 mol% and 12.5 mol%). 3Y-TZP/TiO2 ceramic powders were synthesized by coprecipitation, uniaxially pressed and sintered at six different sintering conditions. Microstructural analysis of the sintered samples was performed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Optical properties were measured using a spectrophotometer. The density was determined by Archimedes principle. Flexural strength was estimated by the biaxial flexure device. The microstructure and flexural strength of the 3Y-TZP/TiO2 dental ceramic with 7.5% and 12.5 mol% were affected by the sintering conditions. Sintering the specimens at 1460 °C for 2 h increased the grain size and significantly decreased the flexural strength of 3Y-TZP/TiO2 dental ceramic. The interaction (titania content x sintering conditions) affected the relative density and optical properties. A relative density greater than 98% was achieved for the T7.5 groups (sintered at 1260 °C/1 h, 1300 °C/1 h and 1300 °C/2 h) and for the T12.5 groups (sintered at 1260 °C/1 h, 1260 °C/4 h, 1300 °C/1 h and 1300 °C/2 h). The highest values of L*, a* and b* were respectively 87.2 (T7.5 group sintered at 1460 °C/2hs), 4.3 (T12.5 group sintered at 1300 °C/2hs) and 15.8 (T12.5 group sintered at 1300 °C/1 h). The material developed with 12.5 mol% of titania and sintered at 1300 °C/2 h showed high densification, flexural strength of 670 MPa and has good potential to be used in dentistry.

Comparison of a laboratorial scale synthesized and a commercial yttria‐tetragonal zirconia polycrystals ceramics submitted to microwave sintering. International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology, v. 16, n. 5, SI, p. 2020-2027, 2019. DOI: 10.1111/ijac.13310

Abstract: Conventional sintering techniques of yttria‐tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y‐TZP) ceramics have presented limitations regarding the sintering time and temperature, increasing the cost of the final dental and biomedical products. Herein, microwave sintering comes to be an interesting alternative by providing fast heating, high densification, and grain‐size control. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of microwave sintering of Y‐TZP dental ceramics prepared from a pre‐sintered commercial block and produced from powders synthesized in a laboratorial scale by the precipitation route. The synthetized and commercial discs were submitted to microwave sintering at 1450°C and 1350°C for 15, 30, and 60 minutes. Densification, fracture toughness, grain size, and crystalline phase quantification of the sintered groups were evaluated. Both synthetized and commercial groups sintered at 1450°C for 15 and 30 minutes showed the higher densification results (98% TD). XRD quantitative phase analysis indicates that samples present 89% tetragonal and 11% cubic phases, except for the group prepared from coprecipitated powders sintered at 1450°C for 30 minutes, that presented 79% and 21% of tetragonal and cubic phases. The microwave sintering at 1450°C allows hardness and fracture toughness values comparable to conventional sintering.

Abstract: The conversion of methane into methanol is one of the great challenges in the photocatalysis. In this investigation WO3/TiO2 photocatalysts was synthesized by sodium borohydride (NaBH4) method. The tungsten concentration was studied in the range of 5 to 20 atomic ratio. XRD results revealed a TiO2 anatase phase and WO3 peaks near the background noise. However, WO3 presence has been highlighted by Raman spectroscopy, indicating the existence of both orthorhombic and amorphous phase. The photocatalyst experiments showed that all materials enable the methanol production in UVC irradiation, and only the materials with WO3 content produced the alcohol in white light irradiation. The high conversion was observed for WO3(10)/TiO2(90) with 3.5 mmol h-1. The conversion of methane to methanol was most promising using WO3(10)/TiO2(90) due high conversion and no other products observed in FTIR spectra.

Abstract: Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2 nanocomposite was synthesized by co-precipitation and hydrothermal treatment methods. After the characterization of the MWCNT-SiO2 powder, specimens were obtained from the synthesized material Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2 by uniaxial pressing for a second characterization and later comparison of its optical and mechanical properties with the conventional Y-TZP. The MWCNT-SiO2 was presented in bundles of carbon nanotubes coated by silica (mean length: 5.10 ± 1.34 μm /D90: 6.9 μm). The composite manufactured was opaque (contrast ratio: 0.9929 ± 0.0012) and had a white color with a slightly difference from the conventional Y-TZP (ΔE00: 4.4 ± 2.2) color. The mechanical properties of Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2: vickers hardness (10.14 ± 1.27 GPa; p = 0.25) and fracture toughness (4.98 ± 0.30 MPa m1/2; p = 0.39), showed no significant difference from the conventional Y-TZP (hardness: 8.87 ± 0.89; fracture toughness: 4.98 ± 0.30 MPa m1/2). However, for flexural strength (p = 0.003), a lower value was obtained for Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2 (299.4 ± 30.5 MPa) when compared to the control Y-TZP (623.7 ± 108.8 MPa). The manufactured Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2 composite presented satisfactory optical properties, however the co-precipitation and hydrothermal treatment methods need to be optimized to avoid the formation of porosities and strong agglomerates, both from Y-TZP particles and MWCNT-SiO2 bundles, which lead to a significant decrease in the material flexural strength.

International Journal of Electrochemical Science, v. 12, p. 3795-3813, 2017. DOI: 10.20964/2017.05.68

Abstract: The effect of Sn loading (5–30 mol %) on Pt catalysts supported on reduced graphene oxide was investigated for ethanol electro-oxidation in acidic medium. Reduced graphene oxide was synthesized via graphite oxidation–exfoliation process in liquid phase and chemical reduction. Pt and PtxSny catalysts were deposited on reduced graphene oxide by a NaBH4 impregnation–reduction method. The adopted procedures allowed the synthesis of graphene-like nanosheets where single Sn-doped Pt nanoparticles were impregnated. Pt lattice parameter and micro-strain increased with Sn addition, confirming the formation of a solid solution. Concerning ethanol electro-oxidation, Pt was more active when supported on reduced graphene oxide whereas the introduction of Sn enhanced the catalyst activity, leading to lower ethanol oxidation potentials and higher current densities.

Abstract: This study evaluated the effect of distinct bonding strategies on the retention of full-contour zirconia ceramic (YTZP, FCZ) crowns, and it characterized some physicochemical and mechanical properties of FCZ ceramic and its corresponding glazing system. To evaluate retention strength, dies were made with a dentin-analogue material to simulate a prepared tooth. FCZ crowns were manufactured using CAD-CAM technology and allocated into groups according to the bonding strategy: no ceramic treatment (PF – Panavia F cementation), glaze (GL), tribochemical silica coating (CJ), CJ + GL, and piranha solution followed by glaze (PS + GL). The specimens were subjected to thermocycling and storage in distilled water for 100 days before the retention tests. FCZ presented a porosity volume fraction of 0.2%, an apparent density of 6.06 g/cm3, Vickers hardness of 12.4±0.07 GPa, and fracture toughness of 5.54±0.24 MPam1/2. SEM revealed a homogeneous microstructure composed of submicron-sized grains. XRD identified mainly zirconia's tetragonal phase. Glaze powder morphology was observed to be irregular, with a nanometric particle size, and a diffraction pattern characteristic of an amorphous material with several peaks of leucite. The PF and GL groups had higher retention values. The majority of the groups presented pre-test bonding failures, and two catastrophic failures of the FCZ-crown (GL and PF groups) were noted. The use of an MDP-containing resin cement or glaze application might improve retention of the FCZ crowns.

Abstract: Objectives. During the last decades, several changes of paradigm have modified our view on how biomaterials' surface characteristics influence the bioresponse. After becoming aware of the role of a certain microroughness for improved cellular contact and osseointegration of dental titanium implants, the likewise important role of surface energy and wettability was increasingly strengthened. Very recently, synergistic effects of nanoscaled topographical features and hydrophilicity at the implant/bone interface have been reported. Methods. Questions arise about which surface roughness and wetting data are capable to predict the bioresponse and, ultimately, the clinical performance. Current methods and approaches applied for topographical, wetting and surface energetic analyses are highlighted. Current knowledge of possible mechanisms explaining the influence of roughness and hydrophilicity at the biological interface is presented. Results. Most marketed and experimental surfaces are based on commonly available additive or subtractive surface modifying methods such as blasting, etching or anodizing. Different height, spatial, hybrid and functional roughness parameters have been identified as possible candidates able to predict the outcome at hard and soft tissue interfaces. Likewise, hydrophilic implants have been proven to improve the initial blood contact, to support the wound healing and thereby accelerating the osseointegration. Significance. There is clear relevance for the influence of topographical and wetting characteristics on a macromolecular and cellular level at endosseous implant/biosystem interfaces. However, we are still far away from designing sophisticated implant surfaces with the best possible, selective functionality for each specific tissue or cavity interface. Firstly, because our knowledge of the respective surface related reactions is at best fragmentary. Secondly, because manufacturing of multi-scaled complex surfaces including distinct nanotopographies, wetting properties, and stable cleanliness is still a technical challenge and far away from being reproducibly transferred to implant surfaces. Engineering graphene surface toward design of aggregation-resistant catalyst supports for advanced energy conversion. Abstract: Graphene has been considered an emerging fuel cell catalyst support due to its excellent chemical and electrical properties. The evaluation of the unit activity on each catalytic site (intrinsic) of low-loading supported metal nanoparticles (NPs), however, is often hampered by face-to-face aggregation of graphene sheets. Herein, we demonstrate the critical role of the expansion between sheets in a pivotal electrocatalytic process for green energy conversion through ethanol oxidation in acid medium. In order to reduce mass-transport resistances and incomplete utilization of the supported NPs, a one-step design strategy is proposed for tuning a desired physicochemical property of graphene: surface area. This step is based on the principle that the apparent activity is governed by the extrinsic activity, i . e ., the number of exposed active sites for a particular mass loading. Our design principle is achieved by a two-stage method involving a chemical delamination process of graphite (1) with an in situ surfactant functionalization/intercalation–reduction approach (2). As a result, not only an interlayer expansion was attained but also a short-ranged layered structure was assembled. This structural reorganization substantially affected the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) over platinum NPs. The unique nanoarchitecture provided a high density of EOR active sites, which incurred in a specific current value increased by about 2.5 and 5.4 times compared to platinum supported on state-of-the-art carbon black and restacked graphene, respectively.

Abstract: Different techniques for the improvement of surface conditions have been proposed in the development of biomaterials. This paper proposed a study comparing three different patterns of ceramic surfaces for 85% Al2O3-15% ZrO2. The surface properties of the samples were analyzed after sintering, and were compared the surface without treatment, with polished surfaces, and textured surfaces femtosecond laser. The samples were characterized by DRX and density and the surfaces were characterized for roughness, wettability and scanning electron microscopy. It was also analyzed the cell adhesion behavior, using Vero cell (ATCC CCL-81). The results showed a strong correlation between the roughness and wettability with adherence behavior and cell morphology. It was observed that the effect of the laser made the surface exhibit a behavior hydrophobic with a tendency micro-roughness controlled and generated. Despite the lower participation rate, compared to other surfaces, there was more intense cell spreading on these surfaces, and vesicles on the surface of the adhered cells, showing a favorable metabolic activity of cells in this type of surface.
