Abstract: The addition of titania to zirconia dental implants has been considered a promising choice to improve its bioactivity. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different sintering conditions on the microstructure, density, optical properties and flexural strength of a 3Y-TZP/TiO2 dental ceramic based on zirconia with two different titania contents (7.5 mol% and 12.5 mol%). 3Y-TZP/TiO2 ceramic powders were synthesized by coprecipitation, uniaxially pressed and sintered at six different sintering conditions. Microstructural analysis of the sintered samples was performed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Optical properties were measured using a spectrophotometer. The density was determined by Archimedes principle. Flexural strength was estimated by the biaxial flexure device. The microstructure and flexural strength of the 3Y-TZP/TiO2 dental ceramic with 7.5% and 12.5 mol% were affected by the sintering conditions. Sintering the specimens at 1460 °C for 2 h increased the grain size and significantly decreased the flexural strength of 3Y-TZP/TiO2 dental ceramic. The interaction (titania content x sintering conditions) affected the relative density and optical properties. A relative density greater than 98% was achieved for the T7.5 groups (sintered at 1260 °C/1 h, 1300 °C/1 h and 1300 °C/2 h) and for the T12.5 groups (sintered at 1260 °C/1 h, 1260 °C/4 h, 1300 °C/1 h and 1300 °C/2 h). The highest values of L*, a* and b* were respectively 87.2 (T7.5 group sintered at 1460 °C/2hs), 4.3 (T12.5 group sintered at 1300 °C/2hs) and 15.8 (T12.5 group sintered at 1300 °C/1 h). The material developed with 12.5 mol% of titania and sintered at 1300 °C/2 h showed high densification, flexural strength of 670 MPa and has good potential to be used in dentistry.

Designed synthesis of nanostructured ZrO2 as active support for glycerol valorization reaction. Ceramics International, v. 49, n. 2, p. 1764-1778, 2023. DOI: 10.1016/j.ceramint.2022.09.140

Abstract: Designed synthesis of nanostructured ZrO2 as support for glycerol valorization reaction was investigated. The nanocasting route was used to obtain the ZrO2 support possessing well-dispersed Cu and Zn nanoparticles. The solids were fully characterized by High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), N2-physisorption isotherms, Temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD), Scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy measurements. The resultant CuZn/ZrO2 catalyst presented here was distinguished by its unique mesostructured features and defective sites formation. The promotional effect of Cu nanoparticles on the activity illustrated that the formation of active acid sites of medium to strong strength can be modulated by adding a second metal to the catalyst. All these properties provided active solids for acetalization of glycerol with aldehydes and ketones due to the interaction between the active centers and the nanostructured support. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation showed the most favorable mechanistic route of low energy for biofuel additives production.

Abstract: This paper describes a study of shrinkage behavior in the liquid phase sintering of silicon carbide, SiC, using eutectic mixtures of Al2O3+Dy2O3 and Al2O3+Yb2O3 as liquid-forming additives. A volume fraction 10% of these mixtures was added to the SiC and homogenized in an attrition mill. Sintering was performed in a horizontal dilatometer at 1800 °C for 60 min, applying heating rates of 10, 20 and 30 °C/min. The results indicate that these heating rates affected neither shrinkage nor microstructure, from the standpoint of the complete sintering cycle. However, significant differences occurred during the non-isothermal sintering stage, leading to very different shrinkage results as a function of the heating rate. Higher heating rates produced lower shrinkage, and the work of final shrinkage occurred during the isothermal stage.

Abstract: Samples of SiC+10 vol%(Al2O3+Dy2O3) and SiC+10 vol%(Al2O3+Yb2O3) mixtures were obtained by cold isostatic pressing and sintered for one hour in a dilatometer at 1800 °C and 1900 °C, applying heating rates of 10, 20 and 30 °C/min. The results of the complete sintering cycle indicated that the heating rates do not significantly influence the shrinkage, but that temperature and total sintering time may be relevant factors. The compacts sintered at 1900 °C shrank on average 9% more than those sintered at 1800 °C, and it was found that the sintering time can be reduced by 40–50% at faster heating rates. The maximum shrinkage rates occurred at temperatures lower than those of the sintering thresholds for the two mixtures, two temperatures and three heating rates. It was also found that after formation of the liquid, the mechanisms of particle rearrangement and solution-precipitation were not as fast as reported in the literature, even at high heating rates, for example 30 °C/ min, but they are responsible for much of the shrinkage occurring throughout the sintering cycle.

Abstract: The effects of small amounts of lithium fluoride sintering aid on the microstructure and dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) ceramics were investigated. CCTO polycrystalline ceramics with 0.5 and 1.0 mol% LiF, and without additive were prepared by solid state synthesis. Good densification (>90% of the theoretical density) was obtained for all prepared materials. Specimens without the sintering aid and sintered at 1090 °C exhibit secondary phases as an outcome of the decomposition reaction. The mean grain size is controlled by the amount of LiF in specimens containing the additive. Impedance spectroscopy measurements on CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramics evidence the electrically heterogeneous nature of this material consisting of semiconductor grains along with insulating grain boundaries. The activation energy for grain boundary conduction is lower for specimens prepared with the additive, and the electric permittivity reached 53,000 for 0.5 mol% LiF containing CCTO.

Femtosecond Ti: Sa ultra short-pulse laser irradiation effects on the properties and morphology of the zirconia surface after ageing. Ceramics International, v. 47, n. 4, p. 4455-4465, 2021. DOI: 10.1016/j.ceramint.2020.10.006

Abstract: Femtosecond pulses from a Ti:Sapphire laser were used to irradiate specimens of yttria-stabilised (35% mol) tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) with the purpose of studying the effects of the irradiations on their surface properties and morphology after ageing. Zirconia disks were divided into eight groups (n = 32) according to their surface treatment and subsequent ageing: Control: no treatment; sandblasting: Al2O3 sandblasting 50 μm; and ultrashort laser pulses irradiation with 25 μJ pulses, considering two different scanning steps based on the width between two grooves. These groups were duplicated and submitted to ageing. The surfaces were analysed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction. A finite element analysis, a biaxial flexure test, as well as fractographic and Weibull analyses, were performed. The strengths of the disks were statistically different for the treatment factor, and the principal stresses seemed to be concentrated at the centre of the specimens, as predicted by the computer simulations. Ageing decreased the strengths for all groups and increased the Weibull modulus for the laser group with the 40 μm-width between two grooves. The sandblasting group presented the highest monoclinic phase peak. Although the most significant strength was found within the sandblasting group, the phase transformation was favourable to the laser groups. The Weibull modulus was higher for the laser group with the 60 μm-width between two grooves, confirming the highest homogeneity of its failure distribution. Regardless of the surface treatment, strength was decreased with ageing in all groups. The femtosecond Ti:Sa ultra-short pulse laser irradiation can be suggested as an alternative to the gold standard sandblasting in longterm Y-TZP zirconia rehabilitations, such as crowns and veneers.

Abstract: The ionic conductivity and the crystalline structure of ZrO2−10 mol% Sc2O3- x mol% Nb2O5 solid electrolytes were investigated for x=0.25, 0.5 and 1. Dense specimens with relative densities higher than 95% were prepared by solid state reaction and sintered at 1500 °C for 5 h. Full stabilization of the cubic structure at room temperature was obtained for compounds with x=0.5 and 1, whereas the cubic and rhombohedric structures coexist for x=0.25. The highest ionic conductivity in codoped system was found for specimen containing 0.5 mol % niobium pentoxide, with the same order of magnitude as that of the parent solid electrolyte (zirconia-10 mol % scandia) in the high temperature range (above 600 °C). Preliminary investigation on phase stability shows that the isothermal conductivity of the new solid electrolyte remained constant up to 100 h at 600 °C. Niobium pentoxide addition was found to improve the overall ionic conductivity of zirconia-scandia solid electrolyte.

Abstract: The effects of small amounts of gallium oxide on intragrain and intergrain conductivity of La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3-δ are investigated by impedance spectroscopy in the 280–420 °C range. Bulk specimens with 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mol% gallium oxide are prepared by solid state reaction at 1350 °C. All specimens achieved relative density values higher than 95%. The additive promotes grain growth indicating solid solution formation. A small fraction of the additive remains at grain boundaries and increases the fraction of the gallium-rich, LaSrGa3O7, impurity phase. The intragrain conductivity of gallium oxide containing specimens is higher than that of the parent solid electrolyte. Similar effect is found for the intergrain conductivity, which is maximum for 1 mol% gallium oxide addition.

Interfacial segregation in Cl−-doped nano-ZnO polycrystalline semiconductors and its effect on electrical properties. Ceramics International, v. 47, n. 17, p. 24860-24867, 2021. DOI: 10.1016/j.ceramint.2021.05.212

Abstract: In this study, interfacial segregation in Cl−-doped ZnO (0.0, 1.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 6.0 mol%) was explored as a strategy to compensate the space charge layer to decrease the electric potential barrier height at the grain boundaries and increase the overall electrical conductivity of the system. The focus of this work was to evaluate the dopant segregation and provide the first insights into the influence of interfacial segregation on the electrical properties. By using a systematic lixiviation method, we demonstrated that in addition to the bulk solubility, the Cl− anions segregated at both the surface and grain boundaries. Impedance spectroscopy measurements showed a four orders of magnitude reduction in the total electrical resistivity in the Cl−-doped ZnO samples compared to that of undoped ZnO. The calculated value of the electric potential barrier height decreased, as well as the activation energy for conduction, which decreased from 853 meV for undoped ZnO to 168 meV for 1.2 mol% Cl−-doped ZnO.

Abstract: Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are composites graded in one or more directions by the mean volume fraction variation of their constituents in a continuous or stepwise design. The objective of this study is to apply the FGM concept to ceramic cutting tools to widen its application range. Thus, two cutting tool materials were selected: cemented carbide, owing to its higher toughness, and alumina-based ceramic, owing to its high wear resistance at elevated temperatures. Ceramics based on alumina were functionally graded with cemented carbide and sintered using the spark plasma sintering technique. The thermal residual stresses were predicted; additionally, the microstructure, relative density, and Vickers hardness and fracture toughness for the alumina layer were evaluated, and flexural strength and machining tests were conducted. From the results, cracks were not observed in the microstructure and full density was obtained. In general, the hardness and fracture toughness values were close to those in the literature. A flexural strength improvement of at least 50% on FGM samples was observed in comparison to homogeneous ceramic ones. The FGM cutting tools supported approximately 1000 N of machining force without catastrophic failure when turning martensitic stainless steel into a conventional lathe. The values of surface roughness (Ra and Rz) agree with those in the literature under similar cutting and geometry conditions.
