Abstract:
Sugarcane waste ash, a Si-rich waste product, is generated in large quantities and creates a
serious disposal problem in the Brazilian ethanol-sugar industry, affecting the environment and
public health. Here, a simple method capable of generating bare silica nanoparticles utilizing
this residue is demonstrated. Firstly, the crystalline silica present in sugarcane waste ash (SWA)
was converted into amorphous by melting a mixture of sodium hydroxide and SWA at 550 °C
for 1 h. The silica nanoparticles (SiO2NPs) were formed by lowing pH. This production process
of SiO2NPs from SWA was optimized varying the ash:NaOH mass ratio, increasing the silica
extraction up to 96%. The sample’s composition was characterized by total X-ray fluorescence
spectroscopy, morphology and physical-chemical properties were investigated by scanning electron
microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction, specific surface
area measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric
analyses (TGA), followed by use as adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue dye. With this
process of extraction, nanoparticles smaller than 100 nm were generated, with a surface area of
63 m2 g-1 and a maximum adsorption capacity of 37 mg g-1 for methylene blue. The results indicate
a successful process for obtaining an adsorbent from an industrial waste product using a cost
effective and rapid synthesis procedure rendering renewable product.

Abstract:
MWO4 host matrices (M: Sr, Ba) doped with different Tm3+ concentrations (0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08 and 0.10 mol%) have been successfully prepared by the coprecipitation method at room temperature. The as-prepared nanophosphors were characterized by infrared spectroscopy showing intense absorption bands in the range of 700-1000 cm-1 attributed to the symmetrical and asymmetrical stretching vibrations (ν) of the tetrahedral [WO4]2- group. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements reveal the tetragonal scheelite phase with the I41/a (No. 88) space group. The emission spectra of the MWO4:Tm3+ materials are dominated by the highest intensity narrow band of the intraconfigurational 1D2 → 3F4 transitions in the blue region (ca. 456 nm) arising from the Tm3+ ions. Additional low-intensity emission bands originated from the 1G4 → 3H6 (ca. 475 nm), 1G4 → 3F4 (660 nm) and 3H4 → 3H6 (700 nm) transitions are also observed. These optical results indicate that the materials can be used as an alternative to blue-emitting markers.

Abstract:
The present study evaluated the main factors that influence the photocatalytic activity of
titanium dioxide (TiO2) films grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) at 400
and 500 °C, in different growth times. The photocatalytic behavior was analyzed by measuring the
methyl orange dye degradation at different pH values. Structural and morphological characteristics,
and the recyclability of the catalysts for several cycles were also investigated. Anatase phase was
identified in all films. The higher photodegradation performances were obtained at acidic pH. The
results demonstrated that the photocatalyst thickness is an important parameter in heterogenous
photocatalysis. The best photocatalytic result occurred for the 395 nm-thick TiO2 film grown
at 400 °C, which presented 65.3% of the dye degradation under UV light. The recyclability
experiments demonstrated that the TiO2 films grown by MOCVD present a great stability after
several photocatalytic cycles, which allows their practical application for water treatment with
high efficiency.

Abstract:
A new series of tris-(bipyridyl)ruthenium-like complexes based on the 4-tripheylamine-2,2’:6’,2’’-terpyridine (TPA) push-pull ligand was prepared by incorporation of 4-carboxypyridine (cpy), 4,4’-dicarboxi-2,2’-bipyridine (dcbpy) and 4-carboxyterpyridine ligands (ctpy) ligands, in order to adsorb them on TiO2 in different anchoring conformations. The electron photoinjection and electron recombination processes of the respective dye-sensitized solar cells were greatly influenced by the molecular structure, which defined the surface concentration and surface charge on TiO2, such that the photoconversion efficiency was 10 times larger for [Ru(py)(dcbpy)(TPAtpy)] than for the [Ru(cpy)(bpy)(TPAtpy)](PF6) dye. Molecules anchoring in a more upright position and by a larger number of sites were shown to enhance the electron injection into TiO2 conduction band (CB) improving the short-circuit current (JSC), open circuit voltage (Voc) and the overall photoconversion efficiency. However, a positive net charge in the dye increased the back electron-transfer reactions and induced a decrease in both Voc and conversion efficiency.

Abstract:
Different mass ratio proportions of PtSn (m/m) electrocatalysts with 20% metal loading
on a carbon support were prepared for use in ethanol:methanol solutions oxidation reactions.
PtSn/C (3:1) (91% alloy degree, lattice parameter of 0.399 nm and mean crystallite size 4.8 nm)
presented the best activity for oxidation of mixed solutions. The highest normalized current
(ethanol:methanol 80:20) was 4.2 mA mgPt
-1 (measured after 1800 seconds at 0.5 V). Therefore,
the PtSn/C (3:1) electrocatalyst with an atomic ratio of 65:35 enhanced both the electronic effect
and bifunctional mechanism in (ethanol:methanol 80:20), which resulted in the formation of CO2
at low potentials, as well as the highest amount of by-products than ethanol and methanol.

Abstract:
This study presents the elemental concentration results obtained from 59 medicinal plants used
in Brazil, determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), inductively coupled
plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) and cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry
(CV AAS). The selected plant species were chosen from the Brazilian National Agency for
Sanitary Vigilance (ANVISA) list of herbs recommended for utilization by the Public System
of Health in Brazil (SUS). The results showed that high levels of foreign matter were found in
almost 50% of the analyzed samples. The concentration of the elements varied in a wide range,
although, generally in accordance with values found in literature. High concentrations of Ba, Cr,
Fe, Hg, Se and Ni were found in some samples. The enrichment factor indicated that potentially
hazardous elements can be accumulated mainly in the bark of the plants, possibly indicating an
anthropogenic contribution.

Abstract:
Bivalve mollusks have long been used in biomonitoring studies to assess seawater environmental
status. The use of suitable certified reference materials is a straightforward means to attain quality
assurance in such studies as they allow the traceability of measurement results, making it possible
the comparison of data obtained at different places and periods of time. This paper describes the
certification of element mass fractions for a Perna perna mussel reference material produced in
Brazil. After homogeneity and stability studies, an interlaboratory comparison was performed for
element characterization. Robust means were taken as assigned values and contributions due to
element characterization and from homogeneity and stability studies were taken into account to yield
expanded uncertainties. From the adopted certification criteria, informative values for 20 elements
were obtained and it was possible to assign certified values for the following 16 elements: Al, As,
Ca, Cd, Cl, Co, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Se, Th and Zn.
