Abstract:
Tropical carbon emissions are largely derived from direct forest clearing processes. Yet, emissions from drought-induced forest fires are, usually, not included in national-level carbon emission inventories. Here we examine Brazilian Amazon drought impacts on fire incidence and associated forest fire carbon emissions over the period 2003-2015. We show that despite a 76% decline in deforestation rates over the past 13 years, fire incidence increased by 36% during the 2015 drought compared to the preceding 12 years. The 2015 drought had the largest ever ratio of active fire counts to deforestation, with active fires occurring over an area of 799,293 km(2). Gross emissions from forest fires (989 +/- 504 Tg CO2 year(-1)) alone are more than half as great as those from old-growth forest deforestation during drought years. We conclude that carbon emission inventories intended for accounting and developing policies need to take account of substantial forest fire emissions not associated to the deforestation process.

Amazon CH4 budget and its controls based on atmospheric data from vertical profiles measurements.

Abstract...

Abstract:
Wetland emissions are considered the main natural global Methane (CH4) source, but it is budget
remains highly uncertain. Tropical regions like the Amazon, host some of the largest
wetlands/seasonally flooded areas on the globe. However, tropical regions are still poorly
observed with large-scale integrating observations. Here we present the first atmospheric
sampling of the lower troposphere over the Amazon using regular vertical profile greenhouse gas
and carbon monoxide (CO) observations at four sites. Since 2010 we collected bimonthly CH4, to
provide solid seasonal and annual CH4 budgets with large spatial resolution. Vertical profiles are
sampled using light aircraft, high-precision greenhouse gas and CO analysis of flask air, fortnightly
between 2010 to 2018. The results show a regional variation in CH4 emissions. There are
comparably high emissions from the northeast part of the Amazon exhibiting strong variability,
with particularly high CH4 fluxes in the beginning of the wet season (January to March). A second
period of high emissions occurs during the dry season. The cause of the high emissions is unclear.
In the other three sites located further downwind along the main air-stream are observed lower
emissions, that represents approximately 25-30% of what is observed in the northeast region and
with a clear annual seasonality. In addition, these data show an interannual variability in emissions
magnitude, so we discuss how these data can be correlate to climate variables (like temperature
and precipitation) and with human-driven changes (like biomass burning) that could be influencing
this variability. Over the full period the Amazon (total area of around 7.2 million km2) was a source
of CH4, of approximately 46 ± 6 Tg/year, which represent 8% of the global CH4 flux to the
atmosphere. Using a CO/CH4 emission ratio calculated in this study we find a biomass burning
contribution varying between 10 and 23% of the total flux at each site.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Nhecolândia is a vast sub-region of the Pantanal wetland in Brazil with great diversity in surface water chemistry evolving in a sodic alkaline pathway under the influence of evaporation. In this region, > 15,000 shallow lakes are likely to contribute an enormous quantity of greenhouse gas to the atmosphere, but the diversity of the biogeochemical scenarios and their variability in time and space is a major challenge to estimate the regional contribution. From 4 selected alkaline lakes, we compiled measurements of the physico-chemical characteristics of water and sediments, gas fluxes in floating chambers, and sedimentation rates to illustrate this diversity. Although these lakes have a similar chemical composition, the results confirm a difference between the black-water and green-water alkaline lakes, corresponding to distinct biogeochemical functioning. This difference does not appear to affect lake sedimentation rates, but is reflected in gas emissions. Black-water lakes are CO2 and CH4 sources, with fairly constant emissions throughout the seasons. Annual carbon dioxide and methane emissions approach 0.86 mol m− 2 y− 1 and 0.07 mol m− 2 y− 1, respectively, and no clear trend towards N2O capture or emission was observed. By contrast, green-water lakes are CO2 and N2O sinks but important CH4 sources with fluxes varying significantly throughout the seasons, depending on the magnitude of the phytoplankton bloom. The results highlight important daily and seasonal variations in gas fluxes, and in particular a hot moments for methane emissions, when the O2-supersaturation is reached during the afternoon under extreme bloom and sunny weather conditions, provoking an abrupt O2 purging of the lakes. Taking into account the seasonal variability, annual methane emissions are around 10.2 mol m− 2 y− 1, i.e., much higher than reported in previous studies for alkaline lakes in Nhecolândia. Carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide consumption is estimated about 1.9 mol m− 2 y− 1 and 0.73 mmol m− 2 y− 1, respectively. However, these balances must be better constrained with systematic and targeted measurements throughout the seasons.

model, are vertically integrated allowing direct comparison to the GOSAT
measurements. The absolute columns agree within uncertainties or show no
signi cant di erence at three of the aircraft sites (-1.9 2.2 ppb and 3.6 4.3
ppb at one site with two di erent campaigns; and 3.6 1.7 ppb, and 6.6 2.6
ppb at the other two), whilst at two sites GOSAT XCH4 is shown to be slightly
higher than aircraft measurements, by up to approximately 10 ppb in the
most di ering case (8.1 2.1 ppb and 9.7 2.8 ppb). The seasonality in XCH4
seen by the aircraft pro les is also well captured. GOSAT observes elevated
concentrations in the north-west corner of South America in the dry season
and enhanced concentrations elsewhere in the Amazon Basin in the wet season;
with the strongest seasonal di erences coinciding with regions in Bolivia
known to contain large wetlands. Our results are encouraging evidence
that these GOSAT CH4 columns are in good agreement with in situ measurements
and can be reliably used to provide new insights into tropical methane
emissions

Abstract:
New research developments suggest that nuclear reactors using fusion may enter the market sooner than imagined even for mobile applications, like merchant ship propulsion and remote power generation. This article aims at pointing such developments and how they could affect nuclear fusion. The method is enumerating the main nuclear reactors concepts, identifying new technological or theoretical developments, and analysing how new recombination could affect feasibility of nuclear fusion. New technologies or experimental results do not always work the way people imagine, being better or worse for intended effects or even bringing completely unforeseen effects. Results point the following designs could be successful, in descending order of potential: aneutronic nuclear reactions using lattice confinement, hybrid fission-lattice confinement fusion, aneutronic nuclear reactions using inertial along magnetic confinement, and fission reactions.

Abstract:
Aerosols, clouds and their interactions are the source of the largest uncertainties in current climate
change estimates. More frequent and higher quality measurement of aerosol, clouds, and the physical processes
governing their link with climate are needed to reduce these uncertainties, and lidars are a powerful instrument
to accomplish this task. However, lidars are generally developed by individual groups for particular applications,
and hence typically have very different characteristics. In this sense, lidar networks play a key role as they
coordinate the efforts of different groups, providing the guidelines for quality-assured routine measurements on
a regional scale. Moreover, a coordinated effort is of utmost importance to homogenize the physical retrievals
from the highly non-uniform instruments in a network. This is only possible with the development of a unified
processing pipeline that accounts for the hardware heterogeneity in the pool of instruments. Here, we describe
an ongoing effort to collaboratively develop a Lidar Processing Pipeline. The LPP is a collection of tools
developed in C++ and Python that are planned to handle all the steps of lidar analysis. A first tool converts the
raw data files into a single NetCDF file, including detailed information about the instrument and acquisition
setup (Level 0 dataset). . Then, this is processed by another tool which applies the necessary corrections and
computes the cloud-mask (Level 1 dataset). The final step is the elastic and/or inelastic retrieval of aerosol
properties (Level 2 dataset). The development of LPP has been based on the existing analysis routines
developed by individual groups, and hence takes advantage of previous efforts for algorithm comparison in the
scope of Lalinet Network. A general concept and first steps of the ongoing project are reported, as well as the
next steps towards the release of the first operational version of the processing pipeline.
