Abstract: The present article reports new data on the 48Ti(18O, 17O) 49Ti reaction at 275 MeV incident energy as part of the systematic research pursued within the NUMEN (NUclear Matrix Elements for Neutrinoless double β decay) project. Supplementary measurements of the same reaction on 16O and 27Al targets were also performed in order to estimate the background arising from the use of a composite target (TiO2 + 27Al). These data were analyzed under the same theoretical framework as those obtained with the titanium target in order to reinforce the conclusions of our analysis. Differential cross-section angular distribution measurements for the 17O8+ ejectiles were performed in a wide angular range by using the MAGNEX large acceptance magnetic spectrometer. The experimental results were analyzed within the distorted-wave and coupled-channels Born approximation frameworks. The optical potentials at the entrance and exit channels were calculated in a double folding approach adopting the São Paulo potential, and the spectroscopic amplitudes for the projectile and target overlaps were obtained from large-scale shell model calculations. The differential cross sections are well described by the theoretical calculations, where a weak coupling to collective excitations of projectile and target is inferred. The sensitivity of transfer cross sections on different model spaces adopted in nuclear structure calculations is also discussed.

Abstract: Single-nucleon transfer reactions are processes that selectively probe single-particle components of the populated many-body nuclear states. In this context, recent efforts have been made to build a unified description of the rich nuclear spectroscopy accessible in heavy-ion collisions. An example of this multichannel approach is the study of the competition between successive nucleon transfer and charge exchange reactions, the latter being of particular interest in the context of single and double beta decay studies. To this extent, the one-proton pickup reaction 48Ti(18O, 19F) 47Sc at 275 MeV was measured for the first time, under the NUMEN experimental campaign. Differential cross-section angular distribution measurements for the 19F ejectiles were performed at INFN-LNS in Catania by using the MAGNEX large acceptance magnetic spectrometer. The data were analyzed within the distorted-wave and coupled-channels Born approximation frameworks. The initial and final-state interactions were described adopting the São Paulo potential, whereas the spectroscopic amplitudes for the projectile and target overlaps were derived from shell-model calculations. The theoretical cross sections are found to be in very good agreement with the experimental data, suggesting the validity of the optical potentials and the shell-model description of the involved nuclear states within the adopted model space.

Abstract: Quasielastic scattering angular distributions of radioactive (8Li, 7,10Be, and 8,12B) and stable (6,7Li, 9Be, and 11B) projectiles on a 9Be target are presented. The angular distributions have been analyzed by the optical model using Woods-Saxon form factor and São Paulo potential. Total reaction cross sections have been obtained from the optical model analysis and a comparison between different systems is presented. Coupled channels (CC), coupled reaction channels (CRC), and continuum-discretized coupled channels (CDCC) calculations have been performed to investigate the effect of the cluster configuration in the projectile inelastic excitation, breakup, and stripping reactions on the quasielastic angular distributions.

Abstract: We have measured a precise quasielastic excitation function for the 16O + 65Cu system, at θLAB = 161◦, and at bombarding energies near the Coulomb barrier. A quasielastic barrier distribution for this system was deduced from the experimental quasielastic excitation function. An α-stripping excitation function has also been measured at the same experimental conditions. These new data have been used to investigate the relative importance of several reaction channels in the reaction mechanism of the 16O + 65Cu system. Large-scale coupled-channel calculations and coupled-reaction-channel calculations have been performed. No imaginary potential was used at the barrier region because many channels have been explicitly included in the calculations. Only an inner short-range potential was used to account for the fusion process. We did not fit data by varying potential parameters, and our theoretical results were compared directly to data. Good agreement was found between data and calculations. Owing to the high sensitivity of the barrier distribution, important results have been obtained. The first excited state (1/2−) of 65Cu has less influence in the reaction mechanism than the second (5/2−) and third (7/2−) states, which are the most relevant among all the investigated ones. We have also observed a striking influence of the reorientation of the ground-state spin of the 65Cu nucleus on the elastic scattering at backward angles. In addition, calculations have shown that the excitation of the states 3− , 2+ , 1−, and 2− of the projectile 16O are also important for excellent agreement obtained with both the excitation function and the distribution of barriers. The α-stripping data have been compared to the results of coupled-reaction-channel calculations and good agreement was obtained with the inclusion of the first excited state of 12C in the coupling scheme. However, the α-transfer process has a small influence on the reaction dynamics of this system at the investigated energies.

Abstract: A precise quasielastic excitation function for the O-18 + Cu-63 system has been measured at energies around the Coulomb barrier at theta(LAB) = 161 degrees. The corresponding quasielastic barrier distribution has been derived. Two-neutron-, one-proton-, and alpha-transfer-excitation functions have also been measured at the same energies and angle. Coupled reaction channels calculations were performed to describe the experimental data. Largescale shell-model calculations were performed to derive most of the spectroscopic amplitudes. No surface imaginary potential was necessary for the interaction potential because almost all relevant reaction channels were explicitly included in the calculation. The theoretical results were compared to the experimental quasielastic barrier distribution and a very good agreement was achieved. The comparison of the coupled reaction channel calculations and data has put in evidence several important details of the reaction mechanism of the O-18 + Cu-63 system. The collectivity of the Cu-63 nucleus has important contribution to the reaction mechanism of this system, mainly due to its first 5/2(+) and 7/2(+) states. It was also observed a striking influence on the reaction dynamics of the O-18(2(+)) state, the two-neutron transfer and the reorientation of the target ground-state spin. The best agreement to data was achieved when the nuclear matter diffuseness for the O-18 was assumed equal to 0.60 fm, value that we have derived in a previous paper and that is 10% greater than the O-16 diffuseness. Another significant result was that the two-neutron transfer process is much more relevant than the one-neutron-transfer process, which suggests that the pairing correlation could play an important role in the transfer process of this system.

Abstract: The 18O+48Ti reaction was studied at the energy of 275 MeV for the first time under the NUMEN and NURE experimental campaigns with the aim to investigate the complete net of reaction channels potentially involved in the 48Ca→48Ti double charge exchange transition. Such a transition is of great interest because of its relevance to the extraction of 48Ca→48Ti double beta decay nuclear matrix element. The relevant experiment was carried out at the MAGNEX facility of INFN-LNS in Catania. Angular distribution measurements for the various reaction products were performed by using the MAGNEX large acceptance magnetic spectrometer. The present contribution is focused on the analysis of the one-proton transfer channel with emphasis on the particle identification technique and the estimation of background contaminations.

Abstract: Neutrinoless double beta decay of nuclei, if observed, would have important implications on fundamental physics. In particular it would give access to the effective neutrino mass. In order to extract such information from 0νββ decay half-life measurements, the knowledge of the Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) is of utmost importance. In this context the NUMEN and the NURE projects aim to extract information on the NME by measuring cross sections of Double Charge Exchange reactions in selected systems which are expected to spontaneously decay via 0νββ. In this work an overview of the experimental challenges that NUMEN is facing in order to perform the experiments with accelerated beams and the research and development activity for the planned upgrade of the INFN-LNS facilities is reported.

Abstract: The NUMEN project aims at accessing experimentally driven information on Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) involved in the half-life of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ). In this view measurements of Heavy Ion (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reaction cross sections are performed with high-accuracy. In particular, the (18O,18Ne) and (20Ne,20O) reactions are used as tools for β+β+ and β-β- decays, respectively. In the experiments, performed at INFN - Laboratory Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania, the beams are accelerated by the Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) and the reaction ejectiles are detected the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer. The measured cross sections are challengingly low (a few nb), being the total reaction cross section much larger (a few b), thus a high sensitivity and a large rejection capability are demanded to the experimental set-up. This limits the present exploration to few selected isotopes of interest in the context of typically low-yield experimental runs. A major upgrade of the LNS facility is under way in order to increase the experimental dataset of more than two orders of magnitude, still preserving the high sensitivity of the present set-up. When accomplished this effort will make the INFN-LNS as the state-of-the-art research infrastructure for the systematic study of all the cases of interest for 0νββ. In this view, frontiers technologies are going to be adopted for the accelerator and the detection systems. In parallel, advanced theoretical models are being developed in order to extract the nuclear structure information from the measured cross sections.

Abstract: Precise quasielastic experimental excitation function for the 18O + 65Cu system has been measured and its barrier distribution has been derived. Several reaction channels have been observed on the experimental spectra, revealing the presence of two-neutron and α-stripping processes, as well as the proton pickup transfer, for which excitation functions were also measured. Extensive coupled channel and coupled reaction channel calculations have been performed to describe the experimental data. The inelastic couplings of target and projectile, and the ground state reorientation of the target, were important to the proper description of data. The transfer data were well described by calculations; however, it was shown that they almost do not affect the excitation function of 18O + 65Cu quasielastic scattering. Whenever possible, structure shell model calculations have been performed to obtain the spectroscopic amplitudes of projectile and target overlaps. The two-neutron and α-transfer reactions have been calculated considering the transferred particle as a cluster with spin 0.

Abstract: We measured the 8Li(p, p)8Li, 8Li(p, d)7Li, and 8Li(p, α)5He reactions at low energies using the thick target inverse kinematics method, with a polyethylene [CH2]n target and a radioactive 8Li beam available at the Radioactive Ion Beams in Brazil facility of São Paulo. By measuring simultaneously several reaction channels (p, p), (p, d), and (p, α), the still uncertain high-lying resonances of 9Be, close to the proton threshold, can be studied and their parameters, such as energy, width, and spin parity can be more reliably determined. The experimental excitation functions of the reactions 8Li(p, p)8Li, 8Li(p, d)7Li, and 8Li(p, α)5He were analyzed using the R-matrix theory, which allows us to infer the properties of the resonances. Multichannel R-matrix analysis provides evidence for a significant clustering in the (p, d) channel. The experimental data and the multichannel R-matrix analysis will be presented.

Abstract: In this work we present an elastic scattering angular distribution for the 8Li+58Ni system measured at Elab = 26.1 MeV. The 8Li beam was produced in the Radioactive Ion Beams in Brasil (RIBRAS) facility using the 7Li primary beam delivered by the 8-UD Pelletron accelerator. The angular distribution covers the angular range from 20 to 85 degrees in the center of mass frame. The data have been analysed by optical model and coupled channels calculations, including couplings to low-lying states in 8Li and the spin-orbit interaction. Our results indicate that the inclusion of the spin-orbit interaction in the calculations is important to describe the data at backward angles.

DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevC.100.054608

Abstract: The precise quasielastic excitation function for the 18O + 64Zn system was measured at energies near and below the Coulomb barrier at θlab = 161◦, from which its correlated quasielastic barrier distribution was derived. The excitation functions for the two-neutron, α, and tritium transfer reactions have also been measured at the same conditions. These data were well described by the coupled channel and coupled reaction channel calculations. The comparison of the data with theoretical calculations shows the strong influence of three inelastic channels in the coupling process: the quadrupole and octupole vibrational states of 64Zn, 2+ 1 and 3− 1 , and the quadrupole vibrational state of 18O, 2+ 1 . In addition, theoretical calculations indicate that the two-neutron stripping is mostly due to a one-step process, which has a striking effect on the reaction mechanism of this system.

Abstract: The (p, p), (p, a) and (p, d) reactions on 8Li were measured at low energies. The experiment was performed using a thick [CH2]n target and a radioactive 8Li beam available at the RIBRAS facility of São Paulo . This experiment represents an upgrade of a previous experiment, where only the 8Li(p,a)5He cross section was measured. High lying resonances of 9Be, which are still uncertain, could be studied in this way. The detection of several reaction channels allows a reliable determination of the resonance parameters, such as energy, width and spin-parity. In the deuteron channel we could observe the same resonance decaying to d+7Ligs and to d+7Li∗. The properties of the resonances are determined by a R-matrix analysis, which provides evidence for a significant clustering as well in the (p, a) as in the (p, d) channels. The experimental data and the multi-channel R-matrix analysis will be presented.

DOI: 10.1088/1742-6596/2453/1/012013

Abstract: Heavy-ion one-nucleon transfer reactions are promising tools to investigate singleparticle configurations in nuclear states, with and without the excitation of the core degrees of freedom. An accurate determination of the spectroscopic amplitudes of these configurations is essential for the study of other direct reactions as well as beta-decays. In this context, the 76Se(18O,17O)77Se one-neutron transfer reaction gives a quantitative access to the relevant single particle orbitals and core polarization transitions built on 76Se. This is particularly relevant, since it provides data-driven information to constrain nuclear structure models for the 76Se nucleus. The excitation energy spectrum and the differential cross section angular distributions of this nucleon transfer reaction was measured at 275 MeV incident energy for the first time using the MAGNEX large acceptance magnetic spectrometer. The data are compared with calculations based on distorted wave Born approximation and coupled channel Born approximation adopting spectroscopic amplitudes for the projectile and target overlaps derived by large-scale shell model calculations and interacting boson-fermion model. These reactions are studied in the frame of the NUMEN project. The NUMEN (NUclear Matrix Elements for Neutrinoless double beta decay) project was conceived at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare–Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (INFN-LNS) in Catania, Italy, aiming at accessing information about the nuclear matrix elements (NME) of neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) through the study of the heavy-ion induced double charge exchange (DCE) reactions on various 0νββ decay candidate targets. Among these, the 76Se nucleus is under investigation since it is the daughter nucleus of 76Ge in the 0νββ decay process.

Abstract: Different reactions channels induced by the 18O + 40Ca collisions at 275 MeV incident energy are simultaneously measured and analysed consistently within the same reaction and structure frameworks within the NUMEN project. The project aims to provide data-driven information for the determination of the nuclear matrix elements involved in the neutrinoless double beta decay. In particular, the elastic and inelastic scattering, one- and two-proton transfer, one-neutron transfer, and single charge exchange reactions are explored. The full quantum-mechanical calculations, performed by including microscopic nuclear structure inputs, describe well all the experimental data, giving support to a multi-channel strategy for the analysis of heavy-ion induced direct reactions.

Abstract: The NUMEN project aims at accessing experimentally driven information on Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) involved in the half-life of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0υββ), by high-accuracy measurements of the cross sections of Heavy Ion (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions. Particular interest is given to the (18O,18Ne) and (20Ne,20O) reactions as tools for β+β+ and β-β- decays, respectively. First evidence about the possibility to get quantitative information about NME from experiments is found for both kind of reactions. In the experiments, performed at INFN - Laboratory Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania, the beams are accelerated by the Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) and the reaction products are detected by the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer. The measured cross sections are challengingly low, limiting the present exploration to few selected isotopes of interest in the context of typically low-yield experimental runs. A major upgrade of the LNS facility is foreseen in order to significantly increase the experimental yield, thus making feasible a systematic study of all the cases of interest. Frontiers technologies are going to be developed, to this purpose, for the accelerator and the detection systems. In parallel, advanced theoretical models are developed aiming at extracting the nuclear structure information from the measured cross sections.
