Abstract:
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men in most parts of the world. According to the
National Cancer Institute (INCA), in Brazil there is an average of 61,000 new cases registered annually, while in
the United States of America (USA) there was an average of 200,000 new cases. The advancement of
technology and science has enabled a higher rate of cancer survival, especially when diagnosed early.
Radiotherapy and radical prostatectomy have been shown to be effective in both controlling and curing prostate
cancer; however, the patient´s satisfaction index, during the control period of the disease, in relation to the
health team must be known. In the present work, patients being submitted to radiotherapy in a public hospital
were ask to respond questions about the degree of satisfaction of support being receiving. Part of the research
data obtained through questionnaire indicated that 65% of the patients ignore or know very little about the
disease and 100% reported interest in having more information about prostate cancer. It was questioned whether
during or after treatment there was need for support from health professionals, such as: physician, nursing,
psychologist, social worker and physiotherapist, more than 60% reported having need of one or more specialist.
The complete results of this survey will be used to elaborate guidance to radiotherapy units, through collecting
data from the medical records and questionnaires relative to physical, social, psychological and emotional
support, after the period of treatment with radiotherapy for prostate cancer.

Abstract:
This work presents a comparative study of the thermo-mechanical and morphological properties
of sugarcane bagasse fiber/HDPE composite treated with electron-beam and gamma radiation.
The composite samples obtained by extrusion and injection molding processes were irradiated at
50 and 90 kGy using either a 1.5 MeV electron beam accelerator or gamma irradiator EMI-9, at
room temperature in presence of air. The irradiated and non-irradiated samples were submitted to
mechanical and MFI tests, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis
(TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), sol-gel analysis and X-Rays Diffraction (XRD)
and the correlation between their properties was discussed. Improvement of the bagasse
fiber/HDPE composite properties, using electron-beam or gamma radiation, was found.

Abstract:
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of irradiation treatment on physicochemical properties of three natural polymers, i.e. native potato and corn starches and a typical Brazilian product, cassava starch modified through fermentation-sour cassava- and also to prepare composite hydrocolloid films based on them. Starches were irradiated in a Co-60 irradiation chamber in doses up to 15 kGy, dose rate about 1 kGy/h. Differences were found in granule size distribution upon irradiation, mainly for corn and cassava starch but radiation did not cause significant changes in granule morphology. The viscosity of the potato, corn and cassava starches hydrogels decreased as a function of absorbed dose. Comparing non-irradiated and irradiated starches, changes in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra in the 2000-1500 cm(-1) region for potato and corn starches were observed but not for the cassava starch. Maximum rupture force of the starch-based films was affected differently for each starch type; color analysis showed that doses of 15 kGy promoted a slight rise in the parameter b* (yellow color) while the parameter L* (lightness) was not significantly affected; X-ray diffraction patterns remained almost unchanged by irradiation.

Abstract:
The development of starch films containing natural antioxidants is one alternative of active packaging. Starch is a well studied natural biopolymer that can be used for the development of biodegradable films because it presents a low cost, is easy to obtain and presents good ability to form films. Hibiscus sabdariffa, commonly known as roselle or red sorrel, is an annual herbaceous sub shrub that contains many types of biocompounds, including organic and phenolic acids. The aim of the present work was to determine the influence of electron beam irradiation on potato starch film containing hibiscus extract. The aqueous hibiscus solution was prepared by boiling for 3 min 1% w/ml dehydrated hibiscus flowers in 500 ml deionized water. The film forming solution was prepared by casting (5% potato starch, 3% glycerol as plasticizer and the hibiscus solution) and irradiated in a 1.5 MeV electron beam accelerator Dynamitron II (Radiation Dynamics Inc.), with doses of 0, 20, 40 and 60 kGy. After drying some mechanical properties were measured. The tensile strength of the control films and the irradiated ones was established. There were no significant differences among them. Hibiscus antioxidants were able to prevent the starch radiation degradation process caused by radiation induced free radicals.

Abstract:
Macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia) is an edible nut species with commercial importance also in cosmetic and
pharmaceutical industries due to its high concentration in monounsaturated fatty acids and its low cholesterol
levels. Macadamia cake or meal is the byproduct obtained after oil removal by cold pressing. The process presents
low extraction yields, generating partially defatted meal as a byproduct, being in that way a product with still
great potential of nutritious applications. Irradiation is a food processing procedure that allows the extension of
shelf life and can guarantee the safety of food products by pathogenic bacteria elimination. The aim of this work
was to evaluate the influence of gamma irradiation process on chemical composition and fatty acid profile of
Brazilian macadamia cake. The major components of the analyzed macadamia samples were lipids (>50g/100g),
especially monounsaturated fatty acids (>39g/100g), carbohydrates and protein. Macadamia nut and cake showed
high oleic (>60g/100g) and palmitic acids (>18g/100g). According to present results, gamma radiation had no
effect on the centesimal composition and fatty acids profile of the macadamia cake, and did not change its
nutritional quality.

Abstract:
Edible insects attracted a great deal of Western interest in recent years due to their nutritional and environmental advantages, such as low levels of greenhouse gases emission. Insects have high food-to-biomass conversion efficiency, quick growth rate, enormous variety and worldwide distribution, although, until now, there is a limited amount of data on the perception and consumption of insects. By means of irradiation, different kinds of food products are exposed to certain types of radiation (electron beams, gamma and or x-rays) mainly to kill germs without harming the substance under disinfection or making it radioactive. The aim of the present article is to review important aspects of this innovative type of food highlighting that, although insects are unlikely to be consumed raw, edible insects may benefit from the use of irradiation as a measure for food safety.

Abstract:
The best sources of proteins for human nourishment come from animal origin. But, conventional meat production
involves not only animal suffering but, also, prodigious amounts of water use and significant global warming gases produced per
pound of meat. Sustainable plant proteins are good for human beings, as well as, for the planet. Specific natural resources like
pulses, in particular, represent a very environmentally friendly and sustainable food source and are rich of high-quality and
cost-effective protein ingredients. Ionizing radiation may contribute to food safety and food security. Also, irradiation could
serve as an additional food processing method for inactivation or removal of certain antinutritional factors. In this work, the
benefits of plant protein sources, particularly pulse protein foods, are highlighted. Moreover, a survey on database since 1970,
about the relation among pulses, plant protein and ionizing radiation has been presented. Highlights: Pulses represent a very
environmentally friendly and sustainable food source. Pulses are rich sources of high quality and cost effective protein
ingredients. Ionizing radiation may contribute to food safety and food security and it could be applied for inactivation or removal
of certain antinutritional factors.

Sustainable packaging materials for the food industry: role of radiation technology.

Abstract...

Abstract:
Food packaging keeps food safe and fresh and protects products during transport, delivery, and
storage. On the other hand, packaging also fills trash containers and landfills, lasting far longer
than the products it was made to contain and can also transfer chemicals into our food, with
unknown health effects. Disposing massive quantities of wastes generated by nonbiodegradable
packaging material pave ways for the study of biopolymers as alternative
materials for food packaging. Ionizing radiation is the most effective means to disinfect dry
food ingredients and an adequate phytosanitary treatment of food and agricultural
commodities. The irradiation of food products is today a mature technology, effective, broad
spectrum, residue free that can play an important role in food safety and food security. On the
other hand, radiation processing of polymers is an attractive option for the food packaging
industry worldwide. Practically every type of physical and chemical assay technique has been
utilized for radiation studies on biological molecules. The aim of this article is to present some
aspects of our own work on the development of edible films based on a combination of
polysaccharide/protein - cassava starch and soy isolate protein - among the general application
of irradiation technology on packaging materials.

Abstract:
Chia seeds (Salvia hispanica L.) is a good source of oil, protein, dietary fiber, minerals and polyphenolic compounds. In order to study the influence of the processing methods on the content of phenolic compounds, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of gamma radiation, doses 0-20 kGy, on the total phenolic compounds extracted from chia seeds. Seeds were first defatted and extracts produced with proper solvents. Total phenolic content was determined according to Folin-Ciocalteu’s method and the extraction solvents applied were ethanol 100%, ethanol 70%, ethanol 50%, methanol 100%, methanol 70% and methanol 50%. When using ethanol 100%, ethanol 70 %, ethanol 50%, methanol 100% and methanol 70%, the extraction yield was independent of the absorbed dose. With methanol 50%, the irradiation process affected positively the total phenolic yield from of chia seeds. In general, the absorbed dose as well as the nature of the solvent affected the extraction yield, although in a limited manner.

Variability of Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) signal of γ -irradiated starches.
In: INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR ATLANTIC CONFERENCE,

Proceedings...

2017.
Abstract:
Food preservation is one of the practical applications of radiation processing of materials. Starch is an abundant
and cheap nutritious biopolymer and also is the material for appropriate food systems and for technical
industries. Starch granules are partially crystalline structures composed mainly of two types of starch: amylose,
an essentially linear polymer, and amylopectin, with 3-44% of branch points. Electron spin resonance (ESR)
spectroscopy is a very powerful and sensitive method for the characterization of the electronic structures of
materials with unpaired electrons. The aim of the present work was to monitor the disappearance of the shortlife
and long-life free radicals formed during γ-irradiation of 3 different starches. Corn, potato and fermented
cassava starches were irradiated in a 60Co source Gammacell 220 with 20 kGy, dose rate around 1 kGy h-1. EPR
spectra were obtained at room temperature using a Bruker EMX plus model, X band equipment. The main type
of ESR signal from irradiated starch is a singlet with a g-value of about 2.0. The fading of ESR signals was
followed for 350 hours, and presents differences among the different starch type reflecting differences in
molecular arrangements of starch crystalline and amorphous fractions, although ESR spectra seemed to be
common for all starches.

Abstract:
Nuclear energy is used to generate
electrical energy, produce radioisotopes,
desalinate seawater and produce hydrogen.
Nuclear and isotopic techniques contribute to
the preservation of water and soil resources
and to control pests, ensure food safety and
greater food security, as well as improving
livestock production and health. The
organization of women in the nuclear field
(Women in nuclear-WiN) has as one of its
functions to make the public aware of the
benefits that the application of nuclear energy
can bring in all possible applications. This
action will help to overcome restrictions from
that part of the public that is reticent about
using this technology and contribute to Latin
American integration. Also, data crossings
of the number of related publications are
presented, which help to objectively analyze
the trend of this integration
