Abstract:
Wetland emissions are considered the main natural global Methane (CH4) source, but it is budget
remains highly uncertain. Tropical regions like the Amazon, host some of the largest
wetlands/seasonally flooded areas on the globe. However, tropical regions are still poorly
observed with large-scale integrating observations. Here we present the first atmospheric
sampling of the lower troposphere over the Amazon using regular vertical profile greenhouse gas
and carbon monoxide (CO) observations at four sites. Since 2010 we collected bimonthly CH4, to
provide solid seasonal and annual CH4 budgets with large spatial resolution. Vertical profiles are
sampled using light aircraft, high-precision greenhouse gas and CO analysis of flask air, fortnightly
between 2010 to 2018. The results show a regional variation in CH4 emissions. There are
comparably high emissions from the northeast part of the Amazon exhibiting strong variability,
with particularly high CH4 fluxes in the beginning of the wet season (January to March). A second
period of high emissions occurs during the dry season. The cause of the high emissions is unclear.
In the other three sites located further downwind along the main air-stream are observed lower
emissions, that represents approximately 25-30% of what is observed in the northeast region and
with a clear annual seasonality. In addition, these data show an interannual variability in emissions
magnitude, so we discuss how these data can be correlate to climate variables (like temperature
and precipitation) and with human-driven changes (like biomass burning) that could be influencing
this variability. Over the full period the Amazon (total area of around 7.2 million km2) was a source
of CH4, of approximately 46 ± 6 Tg/year, which represent 8% of the global CH4 flux to the
atmosphere. Using a CO/CH4 emission ratio calculated in this study we find a biomass burning
contribution varying between 10 and 23% of the total flux at each site.

Abstract:
The Amazon is the largest rainforest on the planet and was an important carbon sink. The carbon
sink is declining, mainly due to an increase in tree mortality as a result of deforestation,
degradation, and local, regional and global climate change. In addition, deforestation and forest
degradation reduce the ability of the Amazon rainforest to act as a carbon sink. CO2 Vertical
Profiles (VP) were performed from 2010 to 2021 (805), using small aircraft at 4 locations: SAN
(2.86° S 54.95° W), ALF (8.80° S 56.75° W), RBA (9.38° S 67.62° W) and from 2010 to 2012 on TAB
(5.96° S 70.06° W) and since 2013 at TEF (3.39° S 65.55° W). The question if Amazonia is a carbon
source or sink is an important role in the global carbon budget. Amazonia vertical profile annual
mean derived from CO2 annual mean vertical profiles (VP subtracted from the background
concentration: ΔVP) from the 4 studied sites can help to clarify this important question. The
sampling frequency was approximately 2 times per month in each location, from 4.4 km height
(a.s.l.) until near surface 300 m (a.s.l.), and usually carried out between 12:00 and 13:00 local time.
The CO2 samples were analyzed at INPE's LaGEE (Greenhouse Gas Laboratory), in São Jose dos
Campos. This result is a direct indication of the regional source in the global carbon budget,
indeed there are well-known discrepancies from many studies using different methodologies
(bottom-up, top-down techniques, and a wide variety of global, regional, and inversion models). In
this study, we will present Carbon flux from the time series for the 4 sites and Amazon Carbon
balance using the column budget technique, and analyze the correlations with various parameters
related to climate, vegetation, deforestation, and biomass burning.

Abstract:
Atmospheric CO2 concentrations have had a significant increase in recent years reaching levels
never seen before. In the Amazon region, the main CO2 emissions come from land use and cover
change (LUCC), especially for the deforestation of natural forests. It is very important to
understand the impacts of climate change and deforestation on the Amazon forests to understand
their role in the current carbon balance at different scales. The lower-troposphere greenhouse gas
(GHG) monitoring program “CARBAM project”, has been collecting bimonthly GHGs vertical profiles
in four sites of the Amazon since 2010, filling a very important gap in regional GHGs
measurements. Here we compare different LUCC datasets for the Amazon region to see if there is
a relation between annual LUCC and bimonthly CO2 aircraft measurements in the Amazon. We
compared the annual (2010-2018) LUCC area from IBGE, PRODES and mapbiomas pan-amazon
datasets for each mean influence area of the CARBAM sites and relate this LUCC areas with the
annual CO2 fluxes. We found differences in the classification methods of the LUCC data, showing
differences in the total deforested area. The LUCC data have different tendencies in each CARBAM
influence area having more deforestation in the east side of the Amazon CARBAM sites. There is
no clear trend between LUCC and carbon fluxes in the last 8 years. Inter-annual CO2 fluxes
variability could be related with the several droughts that influence the
photosynthesis/respiration. Here we highlight the scale issues regarding LUCC datasets,
atmospheric CO2 measurements and CO2 modeling to better understand the current Amazon
carbon balance.

Regional variability in Amazon methane emissions based on lower-troposphere observations.

Abstract:
After a period where atmospheric methane (CH4) levels were nearly steady, its levels have been
rapidly raising since 2007, but the main reasons remains uncertain. Increases in wetlands
emissions could be one possible reason, mainly at tropical regions like Amazonia, which host some
of the largest wetlands/seasonally flooded areas on the globe. Based on 590 lower troposphere
vertical profiles of CH4 and carbon monoxide (CO) observations over four sites at Amazon (at the
northeast, southeast, northwest-central and southwest-central regions) we estimated that Amazon
region contributes with 8% of global CH4 emissions, and wetlands are the mainly CH4 source to the
atmosphere (Basso et al., 2021). Vertical profiles are sampled using light aircraft, high-precision
greenhouse gas and CO analysis of flask air, fortnightly between 2010 and 2018. We observed an
unexpected east-west gradient in CH4 emissions, with higher emissions in northeast Amazon
region. The higher emissions are mainly from wetlands and are not explained by biomass burning
and anthropogenic emissions (like enteric fermentation), but its causes remains unclear. In the
other three sites located further downwind along the main air-stream the CH4 emissions
represents approximately 24-36% of what is observed in the northeast region. Our wetlands
emission estimates of each region were compared to analogous fluxes from the WetCharts
wetland model ensemble (Bloom et al., 2017). The estimates were similar except for the northeast
region, where WetCharts does show substantial emissions, but still just 40% of our estimates
based on the lower troposphere observations (Basso et al., 2021).

Abstract:
Amazon forests play a fundamental role in the global carbon balance as a carbon sink, but temperature elevations and frequents extreme events as droughts and
floods could make the forests a source of CO2. Local atmospheric measurements of greenhouse gases are needed to better understand how forest will respond to
climate change. The lower-troposphere greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring program over Brazilian Amazon Basin, has been collecting biweekly GHGs vertical
profiles in four sites since 2010. We aim to understand the relationships between local deforestation and CO2 aircraft measurements in the Brazilian Amazon. We
calculated annual deforestation (using the Amazon Deforestation Calculation Program - PRODES), land use and cover change data (using the Brazilian Institute
of Geography and Statistics - IBGE) and fire data (using the Fire Monitoring System) in each annual influence area at the four flight measurement sites of the
Brazilian Amazon from 2010-2017 (and also in the mean influence area of all years by sites). We found that when we see total deforestation, it has a relationship
with global CO2 emissions in the Brazilian Amazon biome. Fire has a strong relationship in the drought years, mostly in 2012. Looking at each site, we found
specific correlations with deforestation, fire and land use. The biggest challenge was to compare spatial analyzes of land use change and fire with punctual data
of airplane GHGs measurements. This study will contribute in our understanding of anthropogenic activities over the Amazon forest in a changing climate.
