Abstract:
Granulometria a laser, termogravimetria (TG).

Analysis of slag formation during UF4 magnesiothermic reduction.

Abstract:
Metallic uranium is a fundamental raw material for producing nuclear fuel elements for research
reactors and irradiation targets for producing 99Mo, as U3Si2, UMo alloy, UAlx, and uranium thin foils.
Magnesiothermic reduction of UF4 is a possible route in the nuclear fuel cycle for producing uranium as a
metal ingot. The main concern about the reducing scale to produce low-enriched (metallic) uranium (LEU)
(around 1 kg) is the relatively low yield compared to calciothermic reduction. Nevertheless, the magnesiothermic
reduction has the advantages of having lower cost and being a safer method for dealing with uranium
processing. The magnesiothermic process, as a batch, is closed inside a sealed crucible. In the present study, in
order to have a qualitative idea of the kinetics during the ignition moment, the slag projected over the lateral
inner face of the crucible was used to sketch the general magnesiothermic evolution. The methods used were
metallographic observation and X-ray diffraction followed by Rietveld refinement. The results of these analyses
led to the conception of a general reaction development during the short time between the ignition of the
reducing reaction and final settlement of the products. Relevant information from this study led to the
conclusion that uranium is not primarily present in the lateral slag projection over the crucible during the
reaction, and the temperature level may reach 1500°C or more, after the ignition.

Abstract:
Traditional methods to incorporate metals into
graphene oxide (GO) usually require toxic reagents or high
temperatures. This study proposes an innovative and sustainable
method to incorporate silver (Ag) into graphene
oxide using electron beam and evaluate its antibacterial
activities. The method is based on green synthesis, without
toxic reagents or hazardous wastes, and can be carried out
at room temperature, in short reaction times. To synthesize
the Ag/rGO nanocomposite, a water/isopropanol solution
with dispersed graphene oxide and silver nitrate was submitted
to a dose range from 150 to 400 kGy. The product
was characterized by thermogravimetry analysis, X-ray
diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The
antibacterial activity of Ag/rGO was observed against
Gram-negative Escherichia coli by plate count method and
atomic force microscopy. The results showed that concentrations
as low as 100 lg/mL of produced Ag/rGO were
enough to inactivate the cells.

Abstract:
Graphene oxide is a carbon-based nano material that has a high specific surface area, high chemical stability, excellent electrical and thermal conductivities, high mechanical resistance, the oxygen groups facilitate dispersion in polar solvents and its functionalization. In the literature, is described several methods of metal incorporation on graphene oxide surface using toxic reagents or with long periods of reaction. The objective of this work is to develop an innovative and sustainable method of incorporating silver into graphene oxide that does not involve toxic reagents or generated residues. in a short reaction time at room temperature beyond the use of the as an alternative process to the chemical processes traditional.A silver solution in the complex form was added to a dispersed graphene oxide in water/isopropanol solution. The mixture wassubmitted to a dose of radiation ranged from 150 to 400 KGy using a electron beam acelerator. The nanocomposite GO/Ag characterization was performed by thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XDR), scanning transmission electron microscope coupled to the energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (TEM/EDS). The antimicrobial activity of GO/Ag was observed by Escherichia coli, a Gram negative bacterium and Bacillus subtilis a Gram positive bacterium in solid culture medium. The minimum inhibitory concentration of GO/Ag was 50 mg/L. .It is noteworthy that the incorporation of silver occurred at the same time the reduction of graphene oxide without the generation of toxic chemical residues.

Application of gamma irradiation to conservation: effects of ionizing radiation on the color of featherwork.

May 17-21, 2021,
Beijing, China.
Abstract...

Abstract:
Featherwork is one of the most remarkable categories of material culture
produced by Brazilian indigenous peoples due to its technical qualities and
aesthetic beauty. Weapons, baskets, and musical instruments are frequently
decorated with feathers, which are also used in body adornments that, in addition
to their aesthetic purpose, are intended to convey information about the wearer,
their position within a group, and the cultural values that they wish to transmit.
The preservation of this type of artifacts is demanding given the biological
cycle of the organic materials that compose them, which are inevitably subject
to various stages of deterioration. In addition to the damage resulting from
their use and perishable materials, these ethnographic objects are exposed
to a new environment when they are incorporated into museum collections,
where their existence must be prolonged. Since Brazil’s tropical climate often
leads to pest proliferation, their degradation can be exacerbated by the action
of insects such as moths and microorganisms such as fungi with irreversible
consequences, making their conservation a daily challenge. Although the art
of featherwork is still practiced by indigenous communities, the scarce supply
of raw materials and contact with the tribes involved has reduced the scale of
production. The preservation of this material heritage is thus very important,
particularly in ethnographic museums. The use of gamma radiation for the
disinfestation of cultural heritage artifacts and archived materials has been
shown to be a safe process and an excellent alternative to traditional methods,
which usually involve toxic chemical pesticides. Ionizing radiation has been
used for more than 40 years and, since 2004, the Multipurpose Irradiator at
the Institute of Energy and Nuclear Research (IPEN), a pioneering technology
developed in Brazil, has made its application to cultural heritage a reality. With
more than 20,000 cultural artifacts irradiated, IPEN is currently the national
and international reference center for the use of radiation technology applied
to the preservation of cultural heritage collections. Several studies have been
conducted to determine the optimal dose required to eliminate contamination
by biological agents in organic materials such as wood, leather, and feathers.A
maximum dose of 10 kGy is recommended for featherwork in order to avoid
affecting the physical and chemical properties of this type of material. This
poster reports on the results of the effects of ionizing radiation on the color and
morphological properties of a featherwork from the Museum of Archaeology
and Ethnology at the University of São Paulo (MAE/USP). Samples of feathers
were selected and irradiated with gamma rays at the Multipurpose Gamma
Irradiation Facility, applying absorbed doses of between 0.5 and 200 kGy.
The samples were chosen according to the color of the feathers and then
photographed and analyzed using colorimetry based on the CIELAB 1976
color space scale before and 48 hours after irradiation and scanning electron
microscopy. There were no significant changes in morphological and color
properties within the disinfestation range applied.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Fuel Cells (FCs) are devices that convert chemical energy directly in electrical and thermal energy. There are two disadvantages in the process that difficult the implementation of these new power supply. The fuel, hydrogen, is highly flammable and it is difficult to transport and the catalyst is costly. FCs have been attracting worldwide attention because they are environmental friendly and potential as clean and efficient power source. However, their durability and cost have being identified as important issues in this power supply. The objective of this work is to provide a new material based on incorporation of palladium graphene oxide as catalyst. Graphene Oxide (GO) was synthesized from graphite by the modified Hummers method, in water/alcohol medium. The one-step method to incorporate nanoparticles on this nanomaterial was developed using by electron beam (EB). Additionally, this method also reduces the Graphene Oxide (GO). This nanocomposite were characterized by thermogravimetry (TG), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-rays diffraction (XRD) and its potential for electro catalysis were performed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and amperometry (CA). The results showed that the incorporation of Pd on reduced GO (rGO) by electron beam was 20-40 % in mass. The process using EB and Pd nanoparticles supported on graphene oxide as a support are an alternative, in substitution of conventional methods to the production of electrodes for fuel cells.

Characterization of peloids from different regions of Brazil.
Journal of Trace Elements and Minerals,
v. 6,

Abstract:
Introduction: Since the early days of humankind, peloids have been used for therapeutic purposes. However, the
safety and efficacy of these materials for therapeutic treatments has never been regulated in most of the countries
where it is commonly used.
Materials and methods: In this study, samples os peloids from different regions of Brazil (´Aguas de S˜ao Pedro,
Paraty and Arax´a) were characterized: mineral composition (X-ray diffractometry), physicochemical characteristics
(pH, redox potential, moisture, % loss on ignition at 550 ◦C and 1000 ◦C, cooling kinetics, swelling
power, specific surface area), concentration of trace elements (X-ray fluorescence, Neutron activation analysis,
Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry) and radiological activity (Gamma spectrometry).
Results: The results showed great variability in mineral composition, physicochemical characteristics, elemental
concentration, concentration of activity and little variation in cooling kinetics. However, this variation is also
found when comparing the results with some those presented by other authors.
Conclusion: This study concludes that the three peloids studied are good candidates to be used for topical
application. Metals and potentially toxic elements present are in concentrations levels that are unlikely to cause

Abstract:
In the state of São Paulo (Brazil), occurrences of tar sandstone are known in Botucatu, Angatuba, Pirambóia, Anhembi and Bofete municipalities. In the present work, a sample of white tar sandstone was taken from Anhembi municipality, located at Km 168 of the Castelo Branco Highway. In the petroleum area, sandstones act as excellent hydrocarbon reservoirs, since they have specific characteristics, such as: high porosity and permeability. Porosity is a property of rocks, and it may be understood as the voids contained in the matrix (where fluids remain stored), while permeability is the ability of the rock to transmit these stored fluids. Due to these characteristics of sandstones, researchers have shown a growing interest in the study and characterization of this type of rock, which is a fundamental element of an oil system. In the present work, four characterization techniques were used in the Anhembi tar sandstone sample, namely: X-ray Diffraction, X-ray Fluorescence, Scanning Electron Microscope and the third generation Industrial Computerized Tomography. Through these techniques, the chemical composition, grain morphology, crystalline structure phases and an image of a slice of the internal structure of the white tar sandstone sample were obtained.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in the structure and crystallinity of non-irradiated and irradiated thermoplastic starch blends (TPS)/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) - PBAT and also to evaluate the behavior of castor oil replacing glycerol. In this work, the characterization was performed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), in which the crystallinity index (IC) of non-irradiated and irradiated blends of TPS/PBAT was calculated, through the software Bruker DIFFRAC.EVA® v4.22. For the plastification of the TPS, glycerol, castor oil and TWEEN® 80 were used to verify their compatibility and establish a comparison among the blends. The samples were prepared by extrusion and irradiated at 25 kGy with gamma rays with a 60Co source. However, the crystallinity indexes of the blends were altered according to the plasticizer used and the use of TWEEN® 80. Thus, it was concluded that replacing glycerol with castor oil is feasible in TPS/PBAT blends.

Abstract:
The productive capacity of the Guarani Aquifer System is subject to variations along its
length, due to its complex structural and compositional heterogeneity. Several parameters
may influence the quality of this reservoir rock, such as its mineralogical and textural
constitution, as well as the physicochemical processes, its diagenesis is not the same
throughout the aquifer, influencing the water productivity in wells in different locations. Such
parameters are useful in the geoscience studies, in the elaboration of diagenetic models for
the prediction of the reservoir quality. In this work, several properties of the sandstone rock
from Botucatu Formation were determined, using different techniques, such as geotechnical
tests, optical microscopy (MO), electron scanning microscopy (SEM), X-ray Fluorescence
and X-ray diffraction. The results indicate that the studied sandstones have characteristics of
the reservoir rocks, with potential for water storage.

Abstract:
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of irradiation treatment on physicochemical properties of three natural polymers, i.e. native potato and corn starches and a typical Brazilian product, cassava starch modified through fermentation-sour cassava- and also to prepare composite hydrocolloid films based on them. Starches were irradiated in a Co-60 irradiation chamber in doses up to 15 kGy, dose rate about 1 kGy/h. Differences were found in granule size distribution upon irradiation, mainly for corn and cassava starch but radiation did not cause significant changes in granule morphology. The viscosity of the potato, corn and cassava starches hydrogels decreased as a function of absorbed dose. Comparing non-irradiated and irradiated starches, changes in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra in the 2000-1500 cm(-1) region for potato and corn starches were observed but not for the cassava starch. Maximum rupture force of the starch-based films was affected differently for each starch type; color analysis showed that doses of 15 kGy promoted a slight rise in the parameter b* (yellow color) while the parameter L* (lightness) was not significantly affected; X-ray diffraction patterns remained almost unchanged by irradiation.

Abstract:
Normalmente, a
As eletrodeposições

Gamma radiation assisted reduction of graphene oxide in unoxidized environment.

Abstract...

Abstract:
Graphene is a honeycomb like structure of carbon atoms of sp2 hybridization, with remarkable physical and chemical properties. Perhaps, the most desirable properties of a such material is the quasi-ballistic electronic transport and its excellent thermal conductivity that make graphene an excellent alternative to build electronic devices related to silicon, for instance. However, the lack of organic functions and the strong bonds between carbons in graphene nano-sheets make them unable to undergo functionalization reactions, that is important for many applications such as gas and biochemical sensors or nanoparticles decoration. So, in order to allow the functionalization of graphene nano-sheets and make possible a variety of new applications it was developed a nanomaterial based on the oxidation and exfoliation of graphite: the graphene oxide. This new material has epoxide and hydroxyl groups in the basal planes, with carboxyl groups in the borders, improving the hydrophilic properties and potential for chemical functionalization. Graphene oxide also serves as a starting material to graphene production by reduction routes. Partial reduction of graphene oxide leads to reduced graphene, a nanomaterial that combines both proprieties of graphene and graphene oxide: an excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, high superficial area and remaining oxygen groups that allow its functionalization. In the literature is described different ways to produce reduced oxide graphene from graphene oxide, such as chemical reduction using hydrazine hydrate or NaBH4, thermal reduction using high temperatures and plasma hydrogenation. Here in it is described a sustainable process to reduce graphene oxide in sodium bisulfite solution using gamma radiation. Exfoliated Graphene oxide (1-100mg/L) with NaHSO3 under inert medium was submitted to gamma radiation. The radiation dose ranged from 50 to 500 kGy and the product was centrifuged and analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and infra-red (FT-IR) spectroscopies.
It was observed that depending on the dose total or partial reduction was achieved. This methodology does not produce any toxic residue.
