Abstract:
The guidelines for the Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCP) recommend the use of standard ecotoxicity assays and the assessment of endpoints at the individual level to evaluate potential effects of PPCP on biota. However, effects at the sub-individual level can also affect the ecological fitness of marine organisms chronically exposed to PPCP. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the environmental risk of two PPCP in marine sediments: triclosan (TCS) and ibuprofen (IBU), using sub-individual and developmental endpoints. The environmental levels of TCS and IBU were quantified in marine sediments from the vicinities of the Santos submarine sewage outfall (Santos Bay, Sao Paulo, Brazil) at 15.14 and 49.0 ng g(-1), respectively. A battery (n = 3) of chronic bioassays (embryo-larval development) with a sea urchin (Lytechinus variegatus) and a bivalve (Perna perna) were performed using two exposure conditions: sediment-water interface and elutriates. Moreover, physiological stress through the Neutral Red Retention Time Assay (NRRT) was assessed in the estuarine bivalve Mytella charruana exposed to TCS and IBU spiked sediments. These compounds affected the development of L. variegatus and P. perna (75 ng g(-1) for TCS and 15 ng g(-1) for IBU), and caused a significant decrease in M. charruana lysosomal membrane stability at environmentally relevant concentrations (0.08 ng g(-1) for TCS and 0.15 ng g(-1) for IBU). Chemical and ecotoxicological data were integrated and the risk quotient estimated for TCS and IBU were higher than 1.0, indicating a high environmental risk of these compounds in sediments. These are the first data of sediment risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products of Latin America. In addition, the results suggest that the ERA based only on individual-level and standard toxicity tests may overlook other biological effects that can affect the health of marine organisms exposed to PPCP.

Rare earth elements (REEs): geochemical patterns and contamination aspects in Brazilian benchmark soils.

Abstract:
Rare earth elements have been increasingly used in modern societies and soils are likely to be the final destination of several REE-containing (by)products. This study reports REE contents for topsoils (0–20 cm) of 175 locations in reference (n = 68) and cultivated (n = 107) areas in Brazil. Benchmark soil samples were selected accomplishing a variety of environmental conditions, aiming to: i) establishing natural background and anthropogenic concentrations for REE in soils; ii) assessing potential contamination of soils - via application of phosphate fertilizers - with REE; and, iii) predicting soil-REE contents using biomes, soil type, parent material, land use, sand content, and biomes-land use interaction as forecaster variables through generalized least squares multiple regression. Our hypotheses were that the variability of soil-REE contents is influenced by parent material, pedogenic processes, land use, and biomes, as well as that cultivated soils may have been potentially contaminated with REE via input of phosphate fertilizers. The semi-total concentrations of REE were assessed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) succeeding a microwave-assisted aqua regia digestion. Analytical procedures followed a rigorous QA/QC protocol. Soil physicochemical composition and total oxides were also determined. Natural background and anthropogenic concentrations for REE were established statistically from the dataset by the median plus two median absolute deviations method. Contamination aspects were assessed by REE-normalized patterns, REE fractionation indices, and Ce and Eu anomalies ratios, as well as enrichment factors. The results indicate that differences in the amounts of REE in cultivated soils can be attributed to land use and agricultural sources (e.g., phosphate-fertilizer inputs), while those in reference soils can be attributed to parent materials, biomes, and pedogenic processes. The biomes, land use, and sand content helped to predict concentrations of light REE in Brazilian soils, with parent material being also of special relevance to predict heavy REE contents in particular.

Abstract:
Although air pollution decreased in some cities that shifted from an industrial to a service-based
economy, and vehicular emission regulation became more restrictive, it is still a major risk factor for
mortality worldwide. In central S~ao Paulo, Brazil, air quality monitoring stations and tree-ring analyses
revealed a decreasing trend in the concentrations of particulate matter and metals. Such trends, however,
may not be observed in industrial districts located in the urban periphery, where the usual mobile
sources may be combined with local stationary sources. To evaluate environmental pollution in an industrial
district in southeastern S~ao Paulo, we assessed its spatial variability, by measuring magnetic
properties and concentrations of Al, Ba, Ca, Cl, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, P, S, Sr, Zn in the bark of 62 trees, and its
temporal trends, by measuring Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, Zn in tree rings of three trees. Source apportionment
analysis based on tree barks revealed two clusters with high concentrations of metals, one related to
vehicular and industrial emissions (Al, Ba, Cu, Fe, Zn) in the east side of the industrial cluster, and the
other related to soil resuspension (Cu, Zn, Mn) in its west side. These patterns are also supported by the
magnetic properties of bark associated with iron oxides and titanium-iron alloy concentrations. Dendrochemical
analyses revealed that only the concentrations of Pb consistently decreased over the last
four decades. The concentrations of Cd, Cu, Ni, V, and Zn did not significantly decrease over time, in
contrast with their negative trends previously reported in central S~ao Paulo. This combined biomonitoring
approach revealed spatial clusters of metal concentration in the vicinity of this industrial
cluster and showed that the local population has not benefited from the decreasing polluting metal
concentrations in the last decades.

Uranium removal from aqueous solution using macauba endocarp-derived biochar: effect of physical activation.
Environmental Pollution,
v. 272,
p. 1-10,
2021.
DOI:
10.1016/j.envpol.2020.116022
Abstract:
The main aim of this study was to evaluate options for addressing two pressing challenges related to
environmental quality and circular economy stemming from wastage or underutilization of abundant
biomass residue resources and contamination of water by industrial effluents. In this study we focused
on residues (endocarp) from Macaúba palm (Acrocomia aculeata) used for oil production, its conversion
to activated biochar, and its potential use in uranium (U) removal from aqueous solutions. Batch
adsorption experiments showed a much higher uranyl ions (U(VI)) removal efficiency of activated biochar
compared to untreated biochar. As a result of activation, an increase in removal efficiency from
80.5% (untreated biochar) to 99.2% (after activation) was observed for a 5 mg L 1 initial U(VI) concentration
solution adjusted to pH 3 using a 10 g L 1 adsorbent dosage. The BET surface area increased from
0.83 to 643 m2 g 1 with activation. Surface topography of the activated biochar showed a very characteristic
morphology with high porosity. Activation significantly affected chemical surface of the biochar.
FTIR analysis indicated that U(VI) was removed by physisorption from the aqueous solution. The
adsorbed U(VI) was detected by micro X-ray fluorescence technique. Adsorption isotherms were
employed to represent the results of the U adsorption onto the activated biochar. An estimation of the
best fit was performed by calculating different deviation equations, also called error functions. The
Redlich-Peterson isotherm model was the most appropriate for fitting the experimental data, suggesting
heterogeneity of adsorption sites with different affinities for uranium setting up as a hybrid adsorption.
These results demonstrated that physical activation significantly increases the adsorption capacity of
macauba endocarp-derived biochar for uranium in aqueous solutions, and therefore open up a potential
new application for this type of waste-derived biochar.
