Abstract:
Abstract Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most important
plastic commodities in the world. It can be used in many
applications since it has outstanding properties at low cost.
However, PP has very low environmental degradation rate;
therefore, the discarded PP can accumulate in the environment.
The aim of this study is the degradation control of PP
using gamma radiation. Dumbbell samples were manufactured
by injection molding followed by irradiation using
gamma radiation at different doses: 5, 12.5 and 20 kGy. The
irradiated samples were exposed to environmental aging
during 90 days and characterized by scanning electron
microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning
calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The irradiated
dumbbell samples PP 5, 12.5 and 20 kGy, exposed to environmental
aging, showed intense oxidation with the presence
of surface cracks compared with the PP non-irradiated.

Abstract:
The non-isothermal sintering process of cerium dioxide containing gadolinium sesquioxide powders within a wide range of specific surface area was investigated by dilatometry. Linear shrinkage data of powder compacts were recorded under several constant rates of heating. Dilatometry data were analyzed by two methodologies enabling to preview the relative density for any temperature/time profile, and determination of the apparent activation energy for sintering. Correlation of dilatometry results with microstructure evolution was also carried out. Remarkable differences in sintering powders with different specific surface areas were found. The apparent activation energy for sintering increases with decreasing specific surface area and, in most cases, it does not change significantly in the approximately 70-85% range of relative density.

Abstract:
The sintering process of compacts of nanostructured
gadolinia-doped ceria was investigated by dilatometry
and by construction of the master sintering curve. Corrections
for the thermal expansion of the experimental setup
and mass loss were proposed. The aim of this work was to
investigate the sintering evolution of compacts constituted
by a powder material with very high specific surface area
and to verify the effectiveness of the proposed corrections
for generating reliable density data. Validation of the
obtained results was accomplished by comparison of corrected
data with density values obtained for conventionally
sintered compacts. Dilatometry experiments were carried
out for 3, 6, 10 and 12 C min-1 heating rates. Good convergence
of relative density curves calculated from corrected
shrinkage data was obtained. The determined value of
the activation energy for sintering of nanostructured gadolinia-
doped ceria compacts is 576 kJ mol-1.

Abstract:
The present review showed the importance of using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in the evaluation of the
hair damage. Many hair-straightening treatments necessarily involve a heating process, which even at low temperatures can
cause damage to hair. Several researches demonstrated the influence of the exposure to heat in various types of hair,
correlating it with the increase in the temperature. In this sense, the importance of this research is in raising awareness to
the consumers and professionals (cosmetic formulators, researchers, hair stylists and dermatologists) about the issues of
employing heat in the modification of the hair. To this, the present review refers to a broad and updated bibliographic
collection comprising several studies related to the investigation of the thermal events that occur in the hair under heating
until 300 C, including the denaturation of the a-keratin, employing DSC. This protein forms a crystalline structure in the
hair cortex and provides the hair mechanical properties such as strength and elasticity. But once denatured, the damage
done to the hair may be irreversible. However, studies related to thermal decomposition of this protein are necessary due to
the increased use of thermal hair styling tools, which can be associated, or not, with chemical treatments. Yet, in the
literature, few reviews on this important tool of characterization and evaluation in hair samples are available. Thus,
additionally, the objective of this work is to support researchers to direct the study with most feasible experimental
conditions to achieve more potent results employing DSC.

Abstract:
Ordered mesoporous silica, SBA-15, presents non-toxic nature; high pore volume and high surface area; thermal, hydrothermal and mechanical stabilities. These features may enable its use as a carrier for commonly prescribed drugs in psychiatric practice: citalopram (CIT) and risperidone (RIS). Thermogravimetry/derivative thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) and ultraviolet and visible absorption spectrophotometry (UV-Vis) were used to determine drug quantity into/onto ECIT (CIT encapsulated into SBA-15), ERIS (RIS encapsulated into SBA-15), MCIT (mixture of CIT with SBA-15) and MRIS (mixture of RIS with SBA-15). All materials were characterized through: TG/DTG, differential scanning calorimetry, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared absorption spectrophotometry and nitrogen adsorption-desorption. A general solvent-based method for loading these psychoactive drugs into non-functionalized SBA-15 showed to retard their liberation in simulated gastric and intestinal media when compared to physical mixtures performance. It is expected that the functionalization of this nanostructured silica may increasingly extend the dissolution of CIT and RIS after encapsulation process, leading to application in controlled release systems.

Abstract:
In this paper, ecological-friendly materials based on ethylene–propylene–diene terpolymer (EPDM) with improved thermal and radiation stabilities by Chlorella vulgaris (CV) and Spirulina platensis (SP) powders were investigated by complementary procedures: FTIR spectroscopy and isothermal and nonisothermal chemiluminescence (CL). The stabilization potential of microalgae was evaluated at several degrees of γ-radiolysis by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, while the polymer resistances were studied on a large range of algal concentrations (1, 3, 5 and 10 mass%). The carbonyl and hydroxyl indices of all degraded EPDM formulations were found to be two times smaller in the presence of algal powders, if compared to the pristine material. Some dissimilarities between the oxidation development in pristine and modified EPDM appeared, especially in unirradiated samples. The activation energies required for the oxidation of EPDM and the lifetime of these samples at various temperatures between room temperature and 100 °C were calculated. The antioxidant compounds existing in the studied microalgae proved a significant influence on the stability of EPDM, mainly in the presence of SP, which was confirmed by the activation energies calculated from our CL results. The investigation of cycling thermal degradation revealed the obvious contribution of additives towards delaying EPDM ageing.

Abstract:
The article explores new concepts in order to
promote ceramic and cermet materials sintering at lower
temperatures between 1200 and 1300 C. The principle of
the new process method called intermediary stage activated
sintering (ISAS) involves the preparation of the ceramic
powder with dispersed doping agents, such as nanotubes
and fibers, which shape the pore structure at pressed pellets
with stable interconnected thin cylinders between the
grains. This feature resembles and extends the condition
found during the intermediary stage sintering, which
enhances the ions diffusion rate along tubular pores to
increase shrinkage. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) and nanofibers
are homogenized into cubic zirconia and alumina in
amounts ranging from 1 to 10 vol% at high-energy milling
devices and ultrasound disruptor under ethanol media. Ni,
Cu and Mo/MoO3 can be also added to provide tubular
channel filling. Sintering of uniaxially pressed pellets is
carried out in a dilatometer and tubular furnaces at
1200/1300 C under air, argon and controlled oxygen
partial pressure atmospheres. TG/DTA/MS analyses of
sample pellets reveal the oxidation and gas release temperature
and duration. The results demonstrate the ISAS
process concept is valid since it further increases the
ceramic final density by 8% of the theoretical density at
1200 C, leading to close the porosity at 1300 C, compared to 1500–1600 C temperatures at conventional
process. Short CNT and cellulose nanofiber were found to
be the best additives in this sense.

Abstract:
This study aimed to develop experimental dental
restorative composites by the addition of montmorillonite
(MMT) nanoparticles in a polymeric matrix-based
BisGMA/TEGDMA, to assess the possibility of a different
dimensional behavior during the photo-polymerization.
The characterization of experimental composites was
established with the following analyses: thermal–mechanical
analysis (TMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission
electron microscopy. Data for TMA were analyzed
using one-way ANOVA and Tukey test (p\0.05). It was
observed that the experimental composites filled with
MMT nanoparticle showed statistically similar polymerization
shrinkage values (by TMA analysis) in the concentration
of 30% and statistically lower polymerization
shrinkage values in the concentration of 50%, compared to
composites filled with barium glass (BG—control groups).
These results may be related to the interaction polymeric
matrix/MMT nanoparticles and the formation of
nanocomposites, observed by XRD and TEM analyses.
