Abstract:
Polypropylene (PP) is one of most important plastic commodities in the world. It can be used in many applications due to its relation of outstanding properties at low cost. However, PP has very low environmental degradation rate, therefore the discarded PP can accumulate in the environment. The aim of this study is the degradation control of PP using gamma radiation. Dumbbell samples were manufactured by injection molding and after irradiated using gamma radiation with different doses: 5 kGy, 12.5 kGy and 20 kGy. The irradiated samples were exposed to environmental aging during 90 days and characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The dumbbell samples PP 5 kGy, 12.5 kGy and 20 kGy, exposed to environmental aging, showed intense oxidation with presence of surface cracks compared with the PP non-irradiated.

Abstract:
PdZn/C electrocatalysts were prepared by sodium borohydride utilized as reducing agent for activation methane in an acidic medium at room temperature and in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) at 80°C. The materials prepared were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The diffractograms of the PdZn/C electrocatalysts showed only peaks associated with Pd face-centered cubic (fcc) structure. Cyclic voltammograms (CV) of all electrocatalysts after adsorption of methane shown an increment in current during the anodic scan, this effect was more pronounced for Pd(70)Zn(30)/C. In situ ATR-FTIR (Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared) experiments was not observed the formation of intermediates adsorbed for PdZn/C electrocatalysts, this behavior indicated that the methane oxidation occurs by parallel mechanisms. Polarization curves at 80°C in PEMFC show that Pd(90)Zn(10)/C has superior performance over the other electrocatalysts in methane oxidation.

Abstract:
Pt/C, PtBi(95:5)/C, Pd/C, and PdBi(95:5)/C were synthesized by the sodium borohydride reducing method to produce metal nanoparticles with advanced electronic properties to enhance the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) mechanism. The Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) images and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that a small Bi content does not affect the nanoparticle size PdBi/C; in contrast, it does affect the PtBi ones. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a lattice parameter modification by Bi dope in Pt crystalline structure. Furthermore, the ATR-FTIR results indicated the suppression of carbonate formation and increment in acetate production. The results of polarization and power density curves on DEFC, the material PtBi/C presented the more high power density, almost six times bigger than Pt/C. PtBi/C also has the highest current density (44 mW/cm2) and the lowest onset potential (−0.6 V) in linear sweep voltammetry experiments. It also has the highest final current density in current-time experiments. Hence, PtBi/C is a very promising electrocatalyst for DEFC.

Abstract:
PdSb catalyst prepared in different compositions were applied as an anode in a polymeric electrolyte reactor - fuel cell type (PER-FC) to convert methane into oxygenated products and energy in mild conditions. The PER-FC polarization curves for Pd90Sb10/C presented maximum current density about 0.92 mW cm-2 about 15% higher than PdSb materials. However, the material Pd50Sb50/C showed higher reaction rate for methanol generation than the other materials occurring close to the OCV (r ~ 7 mol L-1 h-1). The qualitative analyses of PER-FC effluent by FT-IR identified products as methanol, carbonate and formate ions from the partial oxidation of methane for all materials.

Abstract:
Au core and Pd shell supported on carbon structure Au@Pd/C can cleave the CeC bond of ethanol
molecules leading to the production of a relatively high amount of CO2 when compared with Pd/C
electrocatalyst as the attenuated total reflectance - Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) experiment
shows. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that this could be explained by the oxidation
of CO species adsorbed into Pd sites that has a modified electronic structure compared with Pd/C. In
terms of DFT analysis, the highest thermodynamical stability of CO in Pd shell with Au core atoms, when
compared with Pd/C is because of the increase of virtual orbital states near Fermi level that can be
occupied by valence electrons of CO molecule. The d-band center shift is experimentally verified using
the valence band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretically predicted by the Generalized
Koopmans’ Theorem. Besides that, Au@Pd/C electrocatalyst has a better electrochemical activity when
compared with Pd/C.

Abstract:
The major part of the world production of hydrogen (H2) is originated from a combination of methane steam reforming and water gas shift reaction resulting in an H2 rich mixture known as reformate gas, which contains about 1% vol (10,000 ppm) of carbon monoxide (CO). The preferential oxidation reaction of CO in H2 rich mixtures (CO PROX) has been considered a very promising process for H2 purification, reducing CO for values below 50 ppm allowing its use in PEMFC Fuel Cells. Au nanoparticles supported on TiO2 (Au/TiO2) catalysts have been shown good activity and selectivity for CO PROX reaction in the temperature range between 20 80 ºC; however, the catalytic activity strongly depends on the preparation method. Also, the addition of Cu to the Au/TiO2 catalyst could increase the activity and selectivity for CO PROX reaction. In this work, AuCu/TiO2 catalysts with composition 0.5%Au0.5%Cu/TiO2 were prepared in a single step using electron beam irradiation, where the Au3+ and Cu2+ ions were dissolved in water/2 propanol solution, the TiO2 support was dispersed and the obtained mixture was irradiated under stirring at room temperature using different dose rates (8 64 kGy s
1) and total doses (144 576 kGy). The catalysts were characterized by energy dispersive X ray analysis, X ray diffraction transmission electron microscopy, temperature programmed reduction and tested for CO PROX reaction. The best result was obtained with a catalyst prepared with a dose rate of 64 kGy s 1 and a total dose of 576 kGy showed a CO conversion of 45% and a CO2 selectivity of 30% at 150 ºC.
