Abstract:
Metals solidification involves the transformation of the molten metal back into the solid state.
Solidification structures impact heavily on the final product's characteristics. The microstructure effects
on metallic alloys properties have been highlighted in various studies and particularly the dendrite
arm spacing influence upon the mechanical properties such as tensile strength has been reported. In
the present investigation, Al-10wt%Si-2wt%Cu and Al-10wt%Si-5wt%Cu alloys were directionally
solidified upward under transient heat flow conditions. The experimental results include solidification
thermal parameters such as tip growth rate and cooling rate, optical microscopy, volume fraction of the
eutectic mixture, primary dendritic arm spacing and ultimate tensile strength. Experimental growth laws
of primary dendrite arm spacing as a function of the solidification thermal parameters are proposed.
The Hall-Petch mathematical expressions were used to correlate the ultimate tensile strength as a
function of the primary dendritic arm spacing. It was found that the alloy with higher copper content
had a more refined structure. More refined structures had higher ultimate tensile strength values.

Abstract:
This paper compares the creep behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy after different surface treatments, the plasma nitriding using Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD), and the deposition of SiC thin films with Cr interlayer using High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS). A microstructural characterization was performed with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM), and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The creep test was performed at a constant load from 500 to 600 °C and 125 to 319 MPa, and a fractographic analysis was performed. The EDS analysis of the plasma nitrided layer indicated the nitrogen presence of the compounds TiN and Ti2N and an increase in the iron concentration. Creep test results in both conditions indicated an increase in the creep resistance. Plasma nitrided condition indicated the lowest creep rate and lesser elongation, making it the most suitable in applications that require a low dimensional distortion.

Abstract:
PdSb catalyst prepared in different compositions were applied as an anode in a polymeric electrolyte reactor - fuel cell type (PER-FC) to convert methane into oxygenated products and energy in mild conditions. The PER-FC polarization curves for Pd90Sb10/C presented maximum current density about 0.92 mW cm-2 about 15% higher than PdSb materials. However, the material Pd50Sb50/C showed higher reaction rate for methanol generation than the other materials occurring close to the OCV (r ~ 7 mol L-1 h-1). The qualitative analyses of PER-FC effluent by FT-IR identified products as methanol, carbonate and formate ions from the partial oxidation of methane for all materials.

Assessment of the von Mises stresses and stress triaxiality in notches using modified tensile specimens.

DOI:

Abstract:
Complete understanding of the local stress triaxiality and stress concentration is essential to ensuring structural safety of several structures. A combination of mechanical tests with numerical simulations can be used to obtain this information. One way to study stress triaxiality is by modifying the standard tensile test geometry (ASTM E8) with a notch. Based on previous results from the literature, five notches were chosen: 10, 5, 3, 2, and 1 mm. These geometries were tested, and the results were numerically reproduced using the Abaqus/Explicit 2020 software. The models used were a non-linear model with the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman damage model to reproduce the failure. The numerical analyses allowed the assessment of the von Mises stress and stress triaxiality near the notch to compare with the standard smooth specimen. Two instants were considered as crack propagation onset; the instant of the maximum von Mises stress in the element at the center of the specimen, where the failure process begins; and the moment of maximum stress in the true stress x true strain curve. For the von Mises stress analysis, the difference between the curves was small. The stress triaxiality is a better variable to visualize the influences of the notch. When the strain is equal to a 0.07 (instant of the maximum force for the standard specimens), for the smaller notches (1 and 2 mm), there is a region where the effective plastic strain is zero. Consequently, the stress triaxiality is larger in this region than in the center. For the crack propagation onset instant, the plastic strain occurs along the whole transversal section. In this instant, the maximum value of stress triaxiality occurs in the center for all specimens. These results demonstrate that the stress triaxiality changes as the strain increases, i.e., varies with time.

Abstract:
Aluminum alloys are the state-of-art materials for structural components of aircrafts. As they are susceptible to localized corrosion, this kind of damage can become a major threat for its safe use in aircraft components. Therefore, surface protection of aluminum alloys against corrosion is a core issue in these applications. In this work, an alternative eco-friendly cerium-based surface pretreatment was developed and applied on the AA1230 clad of the AA2024-T3 alloy for corrosion protection. The corrosion resistance evaluation of this modified surface was evaluated by several techniques. The results were compared to chromium based conventional treatments and revealed that the coating layer, composed of spherical nodular nanostructures of cerium, obtained with the proposed eco-friendly treatment, improved the corrosion resistance of the alloy. Moreover, it was comparable to the corrosion behavior of chromate-treated alloy, showing that this treatment is a promising alternative to replace chromate based surface treatments.

Abstract:
Thin carbon films containing both amorphous and crystalline structures were produced by RF magnetron sputtering. The depositions of the carbon films were performed on Co buffer layers previously deposited on c-plane (0001) sapphire substrates. The thin carbon films were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and field emission scanning electron microscope (FEG-SEM). The Raman spectra confirmed the presence of amorphous and crystalline structures by the existence of an intense D band separated from the G band, indicating early stages of crystallization. The interplanar distance corresponding to the graphite structures was determined by using HRTEM micrographs.

Abstract:
Ti alloys are widely used in severe corrosion environments where corrosion resistance is required, as biomedical industry. Additive manufacturing produces customized and complexes products. Laser texturing is a process of structuring surfaces using laser pulses, that allows the creation of periodic patterns on the surfaces of materials, to modify them, functionally and/or aesthetically, in a precise and direct way, allowing parameterization, versatility and repeatability. Consequently, bringing together metallic additive manufacturing with laser texturing process could be an alternative to obtain parts with functional hydrophilic surfaces, which improves osteointegration and reduces bacteria adhesion. Thus, the aim of this work is to characterize and evaluate the influence of LASER parameters in as-built additive manufactured potential biomedical components. Ti6Al4V specimens were produced by L-PBF, using Ytterbium LASER with maximum power of 500 W, varying the laser power from 61 W to 244 W. The samples were characterized by SEM, Microhardness, and wettability. After that, some specimens were Laser textured using an Ytterbium optical fiber laser, and then evaluated by SEM, wettability, and 3D roughness. It was possible to observe that the surface of all studied samples was flattened after Laser texturing in comparison with as-built condition, due to the melting of the powder particles.

Abstract:
Aluminum beverage cans should have very specific crystallographic textures to increase productivity,
reduce losses and reduce the amount of material. The present work seeks to add information on the
crystallographic texture of aluminum alloy 3104 H-19 during the different manufacturing steps, which
undergoes a flat sheet of metal for a cylindrical body. The work scope encompasses from the cup
drawing to the final ironing operation and its objective is to add information on the texture evolution of
the aluminum alloy undergoes in the intermediary steps. Crystallographic texture continues to change
from the drawn cup through the ironing stages. This rotation is assumed to be a grain alignment with
the plastic flow of the material.
