Abstract:
The recent developments with mass dimension one fermionic fields in a cosmological context are briefly presented. The main results for inflation, dark matter, dark energy, cosmological perturbations, particle creation and interacting models are discussed. The Friedmann–Robertson–Walker equations for both torsion and torsion free cases are compared and discussed in different scenarios. We review and call attention for some important assumptions made on derivation of the motion equations. Other approaches and generalizations are suggested and some limitations are presented.

Abstract:
The growth of two species of macrophytes (Lemna minor and Salvinia auriculata) under the effect of a mixture of amoxicillin, caffeine, carbamazepine, dipyrone, ibuprofen, losartan, omeprazole, and tenivastatin was investigated by bioassay. Three concentration levels were utilized in this study (10, 200, and 500 μg L−1) using a growth inhibition test based on the OECD 221/2006 guidelines. The frond number, total area, and chlorophyll a level were selected as suitable end points. For L. minor, at all concentrations, a significant difference in the total frond number was observed and the growth inhibition varied from 30 to 70% at the low and high concentrations, respectively. No significant growth change was observed to S. auriculata exposed to the mixture of drugs. Thus, individual drug tests were performed for L. minor which demonstrated stimulation in growth, when exposed to most drugs individually, except tenivastatin which was identified as the drug responsible for the significant growth inhibition seen in the mixture. The L. minor enhanced growth was probably caused by N molecule transformation to ammonium and nitrate, essential nutrients for plants.

Efficient non-invasive plasmid-DNA administration into tibialis cranialis muscle of “little” mice.

Abstract:
Background: An alternative treatment for growth hormone deficiency based
on hGH-DNA administration, followed by electro gene transfer, was investigated by
injecting the plasmid into surgically exposed or non-exposed quadriceps or tibialis
muscle of immunodeficient “little” mice.
Methods: An optimization of electrotransfer conditions via a new combination of high/low
voltage pulses is presented. After 3 days, serum hGH was determined and in a 28-day
assay, the relative growth parameters were compared.
Results: Both groups exhibited similar results: 5.0 ± 2.2 (SD) and 3.5 ± 0.9 ng hGH/ml
(P>0.05; n=7) for the exposed quadriceps and non-exposed tibialis treatments,
respectively. The final body weight increases were 16.1% for the quadriceps and 18.9%
for the tibialis group. The tail and nose-to-tail length increases were 4.5% and 7.1% for
the quadriceps and 4.8 and 4.6% for the tibialis group. The right and left femur length
increases, obtained from radiographic measurements, were 16.9% and 12.7% for the
quadriceps and 19.4% and 12.3% for the tibialis, respectively. A non-significant
difference between exposed quadriceps and non-exposed tibialis treatments (P=0.48)
was confirmed via a completely integrated statistical analysis. Circulating mIGF-1 levels
were 126 ± 47, 106 ± 93 (P>0.05) and 38 ± 15 ng/ml for the quadriceps, tibialis and
saline treatments, respectively.
Conclusion: These results show that hGH-DNA administration into non-exposed tibialis
muscle followed by the new HV/LV electrotransfer protocol was an equally efficient, less
traumatic treatment,

Abstract:
The human growth hormone receptor antagonist G120R-hGH precludes dimerization of GH and prolactin
receptors and consequently JAK/STAT signaling. Some modifications in this antagonist resulted in a
drug specific for the GH receptor, called Pegvisomant (Somavert®). However, the original G120R-hGH is
usually synthesized in bacterial cytoplasm as inclusion bodies, not being a commercial product. The
present work describes the synthesis and characterization of G120R-hGH secreted into bacterial periplasm
and obtained with a vector based on a constitutive lambda-PL promoter. This antagonist can be
useful for studies aiming at investigating the effects of a simultaneous inhibition of GH and prolactin
signaling, as a potential anti-tumoral or anti-diabetic compound. G120R-hGH, synthesized using the
W3110 E. coli strain, showed a yield of 1.34 ± 0.24 mg/ml/A600 (~0.79 mg G120R-hGH/g of wet weight
cells) after cultivation at 30 C up to 3 A600 units and induction at 37 C, for 6 h, with final 4.3 ± 0.3 A600. A
laboratory scale purification was carried out using three chromatographic steps with a total yield of 32%,
reaching 98% purity. The obtained protein was characterized by SDS-PAGE, Western Blotting, Mass
spectrometry, RP-HPLC, HPSEC and in vitro proliferation bioassay. The proliferation assay, based on Ba/F3-
LLP cells, shows that G120R-hGH (100 ng/ml) significantly inhibited (64%) the proliferative action of hGH
(1 ng/ml). This is the first time that G120R-hGH is synthesized in bacterial periplasmic space and
therefore correctly folded, without the initial methionine. The reasons for a divergent efficacy for
antagonizing hGH versus hPRL is currently unknown and deserves further investigation.

Abstract:
We summarise the contemporary carbon budget of South America and relate it to its dominant controls: population and economic growth, changes in land use practices and a changing atmospheric environment and climate. Component flux estimate methods we consider sufficiently reliable for this purpose encompass fossil fuel emission inventories, biometric analysis of old-growth rainforests, estimation of carbon release associated with deforestation based on remote sensing and inventories, and agricultural export data. Alternative methods for the estimation of the continental-scale net land to atmosphere CO2 flux, such as atmospheric transport inverse modelling and terrestrial biosphere model predictions, are, we find, hampered by the data paucity, and improved parameterisation and validation exercises are required before reliable estimates can be obtained. From our analysis of available data, we suggest that South America was a net source to the atmosphere during the 1980s (similar to 0.3-0.4 Pg C a(-1)) and close to neutral (similar to 0.1 Pg C a(-1)) in the 1990s. During the latter period, carbon uptake in old-growth forests nearly compensated for the carbon release associated with fossil fuel burning and deforestation.
Annual mean precipitation over tropical South America as inferred from Amazon River discharge shows a long-term upward trend. Although, over the last decade dry seasons have tended to be drier, with the years 2005 and 2010 in particular experiencing strong droughts. On the other hand, precipitation during the wet seasons also shows an increasing trend. Air temperatures have also increased slightly. Also with increases in atmospheric CO2 concentrations, it is currently unclear what effect these climate changes are having on the forest carbon balance of the region. Current indications are that the forests of the Amazon Basin have acted as a substantial long-term carbon sink, but with the most recent measurements suggesting that this sink may be weakening. Economic development of the tropical regions of the continent is advancing steadily, with exports of agricultural products being an important driver and witnessing a strong upturn over the last decade.
