Abstract:
Bioinspired bactericidal surfaces are artificial surfaces that mimic the nanotopography of insect wings and are capable of inhibiting microbial growth by a physicomechanical mechanism. The scientific community has considered them an alternative method to design polymers with surfaces that inhibit bacterial biofilm formation, suitable for self-disinfectant medical devices. In this contribution, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with nanocone patterns was successfully produced by a novel two-step procedure involving copper plasma deposition followed by argon plasma etching. According to reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction tests, the bioinspired PLA nanostructures display antiviral performance to inactivate infectious Omicron severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 particles, reducing the amount of the viral genome to less than 4% in just 15 min due to a possible combined effect of mechanical and oxidative stress. The bioinspired antiviral PLA can be suitable for designing personal protection equipment to prevent the transmission of contagious viral diseases, such as Coronavirus Disease 2019.

Abstract:
The aim of this work was to study the biophysical properties of the chitosan-grafted poly(lactic acid) (CH-g-PLA) nanofibers loaded with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and chondroitin-4-sulfate (C4S). The electrospun CH-g-PLA:AgNP:C4S nanofibers were manufactured using the electrospinning technique. The microstructure of the CH-g-PLA:AgNP:C4S nanofibers was investigated by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. ATR-FTIR and 1H-NMR confirm the CH grafting successfully by PLA with a substitution degree of 33.4%. The SEM measurement results indicated apparently smooth nanofibers having a diameter range of 340 ± 18 nm with porosity of 89 ± 3.08% and an average pore area of 0.27 μm2. UV-Vis and XRD suggest that silver nanoparticles with the size distribution of 30 nm were successfully incorporated into the electrospun nanofibers. The water contact angle of 12.8 ± 2.7° reveals the hydrophilic nature of the CH-g-PLA:AgNP:C4S nanofibers has been improved by C4S. The electrospun CH-g-PLA:AgNP:C4S nanofibers are found to release ions Ag+ at a concentration level capable of rendering an antimicrobial efficacy. Gram-positive bacteria (S.aureus) were more sensitive to CH-g-PLA:AgNP:C4S than Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli). The electrospun CH-g-PLA:AgNP:C4S nanofibers exhibited no cytotoxicity to the L-929 fibroblast cells, suggesting cytocompatibility. Fluorescence microscopy demonstrated that C4S promotes the adhesion and proliferation of fibroblast cells onto electrospun CH-g-PLA:AgNP:C4S nanofibers.

Abstract:
Materials with antimicrobial properties are highly desirable for making food packaging and personal protective equipment due to their intrinsic ability to prevent the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms and food contamination. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable polymer that presents interesting mechanical properties for such applications. However, this polymer does not show intrinsic antimicrobial activity. Herein, we applied Radio Frequency Magnetron Sputtering (RF-MS) to produce antimicrobial copper coatings on the PLA surface. The results indicate that the prolongation in the copper deposition time causes an increase in surface roughness. The PLA coating with copper using a short deposition time (5–20 s) was sufficient to guarantee a bactericidal effect against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis, in addition to conferring antiviral activity against Omicron Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and high-resolution x-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopic studies indicate that occurs only localized degradation on the PLA surface via polymer chain scission. The RF-MS technique was suitable for rapidly manufacturing antimicrobial Cu-coated PLA and providing low copper consumption in the antimicrobial coating process.

Abstract:
Biodegradable polymers containing radioactive isotopes such as Holmium 166 (166Ho) have potential applications as beta particle emitters in tumour tissues. It is also a gamma ray emitter, allowing nuclear imaging of any tissue to be acquired. It is frequently used in the form of complexes such as holmium acetylacetonate (HoAcAc), which may cause damages in tissues next to the targets cancer cells, as it is difficult to control its linkage or healthy tissues radiotherapy effects. Poly(d,l-lactic acid), PDLLA, was used to encapsulate holmium acetylacetonate (HoAcAc) using an emulsion solvent extraction/evaporation technique. Microspheres with sizes between 20-53 µm were extensively characterised. HoAcAc release from the microspheres was assessed through studies using Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectroscopy, and the microspheres showed no holmium leakage after a period of 10 half-lives and following gamma irradiation. Thus, HoAcAc loaded microspheres are here presented as a potential system for brachytherapy and imaging purposes.

Dosimetric characterization of 3D printed phantoms at different infill percentages for diagnostic X-ray energy range.
Radiation Physics and Chemistry,

DOI:

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to characterize 3D printed phantoms and printing set-ups with different infill percentages
for imaging energy X-ray beams attenuation. 3D printing performance was studied using the fused filament
fabrication (FFF) technique with PLA (Polylactic Acid) and ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) filaments.
Phantom plates were printed and, using the Pantak Seifert X-ray system with different beam qualities in the
diagnostic range, the attenuation coefficients were obtained experimentally with the transmission method and
results compared with PMMA used as reference and theoretical data. Different percentages of infill of printed
phantoms were also evaluated and transmission characterized. The attenuation coefficients were determined for
the different beam qualities and results show that the variation in the values of attenuation coefficients decreases
as the infill quality increases. Attenuation characteristics evaluated indicates the suitable equivalence of PLA to
PMMA for 3D printing water/tissue equivalent most complex geometry phantoms. The different printing modes
characterized together with their attenuation coefficients for the X-ray beams will be studied and used in the
development of new 3D printed phantoms in our institute.

Abstract:
Bio-filler from eggshells as reinforcement of bio-based polymers are based on their benefits as adequate
strength and stiffness, besides friendly, degradable and renewable environment. Eggshell is an agricultural waste
considered as garbage, contributing to pollution; nevertheless, it can be transformed into bio-calcium carbonate,
acquiring new values. As biodegradable polymers, there were chosen PLA (poly-lactic-acid) and PBAT (butylene adipate
co-terephthalate), thermoplastics capable to be processed via conventional methods. PLA is a linear, aliphatic
thermoplastic polyester, high in strength and modulus, but brittle. PBAT is a synthetic polymer, very flexible, based on
fossil resources with high elongation at break, but low strength. It will be required the use of compatibilizers, for reducing
interfacial tension exhibited by PLA/PBAT immiscible blend, considering their extreme glass transition temperatures: 62 °
C for PLA and – 30 ° C for PBAT. Herein it was used ionizing radiation for inducing compatibilization by free radicals,
improving dispersion and adhesion of blend phases, without using chemical additives, at room temperature. PLA, acting
as compatibilizer, was previously e-beam and gamma radiated, at 150 kGy. PBAT/PLA 50/50 blend with 15 phr of biofiller
from avian eggs 125 μm particle size and both compatibilizers were homogeneized in a co-rotating twin-screw
extruder, within a temperature profile 120 to 145 ° C, from hopper to die. Characterization involved: Differential Scanning
Calorimeter, Thermogravimetric Analyses, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Wide Angle X-Ray Diffraction,
Tensile Strength and Elongation at Break.

Evaluation of the Poly (Lactic Acid) and calcium carbonate effects on the mechanical and morphological properties in PBAT blends and composites.
International Journal of Innovative Science, Engineering & Technology,
v. 4,
n. 6,
p. 313-318,

Abstract:
In this study, the effect of the organic (poly(lactic acid)) and the
inorganic (calcium carbonate (CaCOR3R)) fillers were evaluated in
mechanical, thermal, morphological and surface properties of the
poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) matrix.
Mechanical results showed that the fillers has an influence on the
PBAT matrix. The use of CaCOR3R showed higher elongation at
break than PLA. However, the blends showed higher elastic
modulus, resulting in greater stiffness to the PBAT matrix. Both
fillers thermally destabilized the matrix. The morphological
properties showed a uniform dispersion of the fillers in the
composites and blends, however it is weaker with PLA. Because
the PBAT matrix surface is, intrinsically, hydrophobic, the
composites presented a smaller degree of hydrophobicity, while
the PLA makes the blends hydrophilic.

Abstract:
The main goal of a 3D printed imaging phantom is to attenuate the radiation in order to differentiate tissues of the human body. This paper aims to verify the infill printing parameter in relation to its final homogeneity in printed samples. Sixteen 8 cm³ cubes with 15% to 90% infill variation, with 5% increments, were printed on PLA + Copper (Cu) and pure ABS. The samples were irradiated using a CT scan at 120 kV, 200 mA, 0.4 mm sections and reconstructed with standard filter. For each cube the mean values of Hounsfield Units (HU) and standard deviation (SD) in a Region of Interest (ROI) were determined. Visually, the internal lattice of each cube was assessed by counting line pairs per millimeter (lp/mm) using a DICOM viewer. Infill values above 50% for PLA + Cu and 55% for ABS showed a high homogeneity that does not allow line pair differentiation. In conclusion, values above and including the found percentages are recommended for use in construction of imaging phantoms.

Abstract:
Surface modification corresponds to a set of viable technological approaches to introduce antimicrobial properties
in materials that do not have such characteristics. Antimicrobial materials are important to prevent the
proliferation of microorganisms and minimize the transmission of diseases caused by pathogens. Herein, poly
(lactic acid) (PLA) was decorated with nanocones through copper sputtering followed by a plasma etching.
Antiviral assays by Quantitative Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-qPCR) show that nanostructured
Cu-coated PLA has high antiviral activity against Omicron SARS-CoV-2, showing a relative reduction
in the amplified RNA (78.8 ± 3.9 %). Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS),
and wear-resistance tests show that 20 wear cycles disrupt the surface nanocone patterns and significantly reduce
the Cu content at the surface of the nanostructured Cu-coated PLA, leading to total loss of the antiviral properties
of nanostructured PLA against Omicron SARS-CoV-2.
