Abstract: A three-dimensional numerical study on steady state was designed for a safety relief valve using several openings and inlet pressures. The ANSYS-CFX (R) commercial code was used as a CFD tool to obtain several properties using dry saturated steam revised by IAPWS-IF97. Mass flow and discharge coefficient calculated from simulations are compared to the ASME 2011a Section 1 standard. The model presented constant behavior for opening lifts smaller than 12mm and is very reasonable when compared to the standard (ASME). In addition, the conventional procedure to design normal disc force assumes that all the fluid mechanical energy was converted into work; however, the CFD simulations showed that average normal disc force is about 19% lower than theoretical ASME force, which could prevent the valve oversizing. A numerical validation was conducted for a transonic air flow through a converging-diverging diffuser geometry to verify the solver's ability to capture the position and intensity of a shockwave: the results showed good agreement with the benchmark experiments.

Comparison of foliar spray and soil irrigation of biogenic CuO nanoparticles (NPs) on elemental uptake and accumulation in lettuce. Environmental Science and Pollution Research, v. 28, n. 13, p. 16350-16367, 2021. DOI: 10.1007/s11356-020-12169-x

Abstract: Nanoparticles (NPs) can be used in several ways in agriculture, including increasing production rates and improving nutritional values in plants. The present study aims to clarify how biogenic copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) applied by two routes of exposure (foliar spray and soil irrigation) affect the elemental uptake by lettuce. In vivo experiments using lettuce (n = 4) were performed with CuO NPs in comparison with copper salt (CuSO4), considering a final mass added of 20 mg of CuO per plant. The elemental composition of roots was mostly affected by the soil irrigation exposure for both Cu forms (NPs and salt). Neither Cu form added by soil irrigation was translocated to leaves. Copper concentration in leaves was mainly affected by foliar spray exposure for both Cu forms (NPs and salt). All Cu forms through foliar spray were sequestered in the leaves and no translocation to roots was observed. Foliar spray of CuO NPs caused no visual damage in leaves, resulted in less disturbance of elemental composition, and improved dry weight, number of leaves, CO2 assimilation, and the levels of K, Na, S, Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn in leaves without causing significant changes in daily intake of most elements, except for Cu. Although Cu concentration increased in leaves by foliar spray of CuO NPs, it remained safe for consumption.

RAMOS, HENRIQUE R.; VASSAO, RUTH C.; ROODT, ADOLFO R. de; SILVA, ED CARLOS S. e ; MIRTSCHIN, PETER; HO, PAULO L.; SPENCER, PATRICK J. . Cross neutralization of coral snake venoms by commercial Australian snake antivenoms. Clinical Toxicology, p. 33-39, 2017. DOI: 10.1080/15563650.2016.1222615

Abstract: Context: Although rare, coral snake envenomation is a serious health threat in Brazil, because of the highly neurotoxic venom and the scarcely available antivenom. The major bottleneck for antivenom production is the low availability of venom. Furthermore, the available serum is not effective against all coral snake species found in Brazil. An alternative to circumvent the lack of venom for serum production and the restricted protection of the actually available antivenom would be of great value. We compared the Brazilian coral snake and mono and polyvalent Australian antivenoms in terms of reactivity and protection. Methods: The immunoreactivity of venoms from 9 coral snakes species were assayed by ELISA and western blot using the Brazilian Micrurus and the Australian pentavalent as well as monovalent anti- Notechis, Oxyuranus and Pseudechis antivenoms. Neutralization assays were performed in mice, using 3 LD50 of the venoms, incubated for 30 minutes with 100 lL of antivenom/animal. Discussion: All the venoms reacted against the autologous and heterologous antivenoms. Nevertheless, the neutralization assays showed that the coral snake antivenom was only effective against M. corallinus, M. frontalis, M. fulvius, M. nigrocinctus and M. pyrrhocryptus venoms. On the other hand, the Australian pentavalent antivenom neutralized all venoms except the one from M. spixii. A combination of anti-Oxyuranus and Pseudechis monovalent sera, extended the protection to M. altirostris and, partially, to M. ibiboboca. By adding Notechis antivenom to this mixture, we obtained full protection against M. ibiboboca and partial neutralization against M. lemniscatus venoms. Conclusions: Our findings confirm the limited effectiveness of the Brazilian coral snake antivenom and indicate that antivenoms made from Australian snakes venoms are an effective alternative for coral snake bites in South America and also in the United States were coral snake antivenom production has been discontinued.

Effects of electron beam irradiation on the bioactive components of goji-berry. Radiation Physics and Chemistry, v. 179, p. 1-5, 2021. DOI: 10.1016/j.radphyschem.2020.109144

Abstract: The goji-berry (Lycium barbarum) is an oval-shaped orange-red fruit with a slightly sweet flavor. This berry has a high antioxidant potential and presents interesting nutritional and therapeutic properties. Irradiation is a safe method that has long used to reduce the microbiological contamination of dried and dehydrated food products. This study aimed to evaluate the irradiation effects on the bioactive compounds of goji berries by irradiating samples with an electron beam at doses of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0 kGy. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) were assessed by analyzing the hydroalcoholic extracts. The total phenolic compounds determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu assay. Doses up to 10.0 kGy did not significantly affect the antioxidant activity in the DPPH assay, and electron beam irradiation improved the total antioxidant activity of the samples in ORAC, as well as a total flavonoid and phenolics assays.

Abstract: The Water Safety Plan is a tool used to identify, assess and manage health risks related to any water supply system. In order to do so, a study was carried out in a supply system, located in the northeast of Brazil, composed by Fountain Caldas (P1) and Well Cipó (P2), as sources of raw water abstraction, and by the Distribution Reservoir (P3) treated. Water collection, land use and land use assessment and analysis of possible risks were carried out in the vicinity of these three points and in another site (P4) to obtain the treated water. The quality of the raw water was evaluated by the parameters of the Resolution of the Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente n° 396/2008 and the water treated according to the parameters of Ordinance nº 2914/2011 of the Ministry of Health. Observing the probability of occurrence of risk and the severity of consequence of the events. Therefore, 17 control points with low rating were detected, and two with moderate rating. Control measures were suggested for each identified critical point, mainly related to water quality monitoring and system maintenance.

Inactivation of milk-borne pathogens by blue light exposure. Journal of Dairy Science, v. 103, n. 2, p. 1261-1268, 2020. DOI: 10.3168/jds.2019-16758

Abstract: Food safety and quality management play a pivotal role in the dairy industry. Milk is a highly nutritious food that also provides an excellent medium for growth of pathogenic microorganisms. Thus, dairy industry focuses most of their processes and costs on keeping contamination levels as low as possible. Thermal processes for microbial decontamination may be effective; however, they cannot provide excellent organoleptic, nutritional, and decontamination properties simultaneously. In this scenario, microbial inactivation by exposure to blue light is a promising alternative method in the food industry due to its intrinsic antimicrobial properties free of any thermal effect. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the inactivation kinetics induced by blue light (λ = 413 nm) against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Mycobacterium fortuitum cells suspended in whole milk or saline solution. We also performed a series of optic spectroscopies to investigate possible degradation of milk components. All species were sensitive to photoinactivation suspended either in saline solution or milk. Inactivation kinetics differs significantly depending on the suspension medium and each species is differently affected. All bacterial species tested presented more than 5 log10 of inactivation within less than 2 h of irradiation (720 J/cm2). Infrared spectroscopy did not reveal any significant alteration in any of the milk constituents (e.g., sugars, proteins, and lipids). Riboflavin (vitamin B2) was the only significantly degraded constituent found. Therefore, we conclude that microbial inactivation performed by blue light presents extraordinary potential for processes in the dairy industry.

Inter- and intra-variability in the mineral content of rice varieties grown in various microclimatic regions of southern Brazil. Journal of Food Composition and Analysis, v. 92, p. 1-11, 2020. DOI: 10.1016/j.jfca.2020.103535

Abstract: The most common goal for rice breeding is to improve the nutritional content and to reduce toxic components. Fourteen varieties of rice were grown for this purpose in six microclimatic regions in southern Brazil. The elemental composition of rice and As-Species were measured by ICP-MS and HPLC-ICP-MS, respectively. Intraand inter-species variations of essential and non-essential elements in husked grains from an important riceproducing region in Brazil are presented. Arsenic, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Se, and Zn were significantly affected by the microclimatic region and the rice varieties. The only exception observed was the effect of Pb variety selection, with 35.4 % associated with random fluctuations. Varieties with both higher levels of Fe/Zn and lower levels of As/Cd were identified in all regions studied. All regions and varieties were able to produce rice with Cd<10 μg kg−1, but the Santa Vitoria do Palmar region where varieties with Cd<45 μg kg−1 were selected. Well-established varieties result in a higher daily intake of essential elements than the varieties under development. Therefore, our findings may provide information to support the selection procedures for varieties, as well as to encourage improvements in management practices between regions.

Abstract: In the second half of the twentieth century in Brazil, several nuclear facilities were built for the most varied objectives. The largest number of such facilities is at the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute in São Paulo (IPEN-CNEN/SP). For different reasons, some of these facilities had their projects finalized and were deactivated. Some of the equipment was then dismantled, but the respective nuclear and radioactive material remained isolated in the original sites waiting for the proper decommissioning procedures. The Celeste Project is an example of a facility where the nuclear material has been kept, and is subject to Argentine-Brazilian Agency for Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials (ABACC) periodic inspections. Because of a number of interests, including financial and/or budgeting situations at the institutions, decades have passed without any further action; the people who originally worked there, and possessed information and knowledge about these facilities, have already moved away from the area, or are in the process of. Therefore, because of the absence of knowledge management techniques in force at the time of establishing and operating these installations, this work proposes an analysis about the possible consequences in case of loss of perhaps the only one remaining knowledge, the one from the people who designed those departments and worked there.

Abstract: Analysis of the uncertainty quantification related to nuclear safety margins applied to the nuclear reactor is an important concept to prevent future radioactive accidents. The nuclear fuel performance code may involve the tolerance level determined by traditional deterministic models producing acceptable results at burn cycles under 62 GWd/MTU. The behavior of nuclear fuel can simulate applying a series of material properties under irradiation and physics models to calculate the safety limits. In this study, theoretical predictions of nuclear fuel failure under transient conditions investigate extended radiation cycles at 75 GWd/MTU, considering the behavior of fuel rods in light-water reactors under reactivity accident conditions. The fuel pellet can melt due to the quick increase of reactivity during a transient. Large power excursions in the reactor are the subject of interest bringing to a treatment that is known as the Fuchs-Hansen model. The point kinetic neutron equations show similar characteristics of non-linear differential equations. In this investigation, the multivariate logistic regression is employed to a probabilistic forecast of fuel failure. A comparison of computational simulation and experimental results was acceptable. The experiments carried out use the pre-irradiated fuels rods subjected to a rapid energy pulse which exhibits the same behavior during a nuclear accident. The propagation of uncertainty utilizes the Wilk's formulation. The variables chosen as essential to failure prediction were the fuel burnup, the applied peak power, the pulse width, the oxidation layer thickness, and the cladding type.

Abstract: Brazil has a relatively large inventory of disused sealed radioactive sources (DSRSs). Until now, no decision has yet been made about the final destination of this category of radioactive wastes, although a repatriation of a small fraction of these sources comprising mainly neutron and high activity sources was already carried out. Borehole type repositories are one disposal solution considered for DSRSs in Brazil. This paper addresses a preliminary post-closure safety assessment for such a facility, using the borehole disposal concept (BDC) applied to different geological conditions and a range of projected inventories. Results from running the AMBER code considering deterministic and stochastic approaches showed that Am-241 is the main source of potential concern in order to comply with the effective dose constraint of 0.3 mSv/y and allowed the establishment of the relation between the maximum Am-241 inventory and the hydraulic conductivity of the geosphere.
