Abstract: The objective of this work is to develop an autonomous vehicle controller inside Grand Theft Auto V game, used as a simulation environment. It is used an end-to-end approach, in which the model maps directly the inputs from the image of a car hood camera and a sequence of speed values to three driving commands: steering wheel angle, accelerator pedal pressure and brake pedal pressure. The developedmodel is composed of a convolutional neural network and a recurring neural network. The convolutional network processes the images and the recurrent network processes the speed data. Themodel learns fromdata generated by a human driver´s commands. Two interfaces are developed: one for collecting in-game training data and another to verify the performance of themodel for the autonomous vehicle control. The results show that themodel after training is capable to drive the vehicle as well as a human driver. This proves that a combination of a convolutional network with a recurrent network, using an end-to-end approach, is capable of obtaining a good driving performance even using only images and speed velocity as sensory data.

Analysis of fungal contamination in vehicle air filters and their impact as a bioaccumulator on indoor air quality. Air Quality, Atmosphere & Health, v. 11, n. 10, p. 1143-1153, 2018. DOI: 10.1007/s11869-018-0614-0

Abstract: Studies on air quality within automotive vehicles are an emerging research area in Brazil, especially in the city of São Paulo, one of the most polluted cities in the world and with the largest fleet of vehicles in the country. Indoor air quality is an indicator of environmental health that takes into account, in addition to thermal comfort, factors that interfere in precarious air conditions, such as the presence of fungi, bacteria and carbon dioxide in indoor air-conditioned environments. The objective of the present study was to analyse the fungal contamination in air-conditioning filters collected from 21 automotive vehicles and the study found 17 fungal genera in all samples collected (100%), including toxigenic fungi such as Penicillium, Fusarim and Aspergillus, indicating that indoor air quality can compromise the health of a portion of the population, such as professional drivers. Among the Aspergillus genus, the results showed the presence of the A. flavus, A. niger, A. fumigatus, A. ochraceus and A. clavatus species, which cause severe allergic and pulmonary respiratory diseases. Air in artificially heated environments should provide comfort to its occupants but it may pose a risk to human health if the car filtration system is contaminated by pathogenic fungi.

Analyzing the influence of vehicular traffic on the concentration of pollutants in the city of São Paulo: an approach based on pandemic SARS-CoV-2 data and deep learning. Atmosphere, v. 14, n. 10, p. 1-16, 2023. DOI: 10.3390/atmos14101578

Abstract: This study employs surface and remote sensing data jointly with deep learning techniques to examine the influence of vehicular traffic in the seasonal patterns of CO, NO2 , PM2.5, and PM10 concentrations in the São Paulo municipality, as the period of physical distancing (March 2020 to December 2021), due to SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the resumption of activities, made it possible to observe significant variations in the flow of vehicles in the city of São Paulo. Firstly, an analysis of the planetary boundary layer height and ventilation coefficient was performed to identify the seasons’ patterns of pollution dispersion. Then, the variations (from 2018 to 2021) of the seasonal average values of air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, and thermal inversion occurrence/position were compared to identify possible variations in the patterns of such variables that would justify (or deny) the occurrence of more favorable conditions for pollutants dispersion. However, no significant variations were found. Finally, the seasonal average concentrations of the previously mentioned pollutants were compared from 2018 to 2021, and the daily concentrations observed during the pandemic period were compared with a model based on an artificial neural network. Regarding the concentration of pollutants, the primarily sourced from vehicular traffic (CO and NO2 ) exhibited substantial variations, demonstrating an inverse relationship with the rate of social distancing. In addition, the measured concentrations deviated from the predictive model during periods of significant social isolation. Conversely, pollutants that were not primarily linked to vehicular sources (PM2.5 and PM10) exhibited minimal variation from 2018 to 2021; thus, their measured concentration remained consistent with the prediction model.

Changes in a bottom-up vehicular emissions inventory and its impact on air pollution during COVID-19 Lockdown in São Paulo, Brazil. Frontiers in Sustainable Cities, v. 4, p. 1-12, 2022. DOI: 10.3389/frsc.2022.883112

Abstract: Due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), many cities implemented strict lockdown to stop the spread of this new disease. Consequently, it was reported lower levels of air pollution due to less human activity outdoors. The changes were registered using surface monitoring stations or satellite observations. However, modeling those environmental changes has remained a challenge because of our limitations in the emissions estimation and also, for the numerical modeling itself. In this study, the vehicular emissions were estimated for March 2020 in the megacity of São Paulo using the Vehicular Emissions INventory model (VEIN). The emissions estimation showed an increment of VOC/NO2 downtown, due to the decrease in circulation of urban transportation and light vehicles. Then, a set of Weather Research and Forecasting models with chemistry (WRF-Chem) simulations were performed with different chemical mechanisms and initial conditions. The modeled diurnal cycles represent the variations observed in March 2020 for the periods pre-lockdown, transition, and lockdown. However, it is imperative to include other sources than vehicular to have a local and comprehensive emissions inventory.

Abstract: This work aimed to analyze the fungal contamination of air-conditioning filter waste (n=15) as an indicator of Quality Air Indoor from different car models in São Paulo city in São Paulo State, Brazil, during the period from October 2018 to July 2019. Three different treatments were used for the decontamination of car air conditioning filters, such as mechanical vacuum cleaning (I), vacuum cleaning and use of sanitizing product (II), and sanitizing product associated with radiation treatment at a dose of 17 kGy (III). After the treatments, microbiological analyses were performed and samples were plated in Petri dishes containing Sabouraud agar transferred by Swabs, and incubated for 7 days at 25 °C. The Petri dishes were stored in a standard Biochemical Oxygen Demand incubator, for the growth of fungal cultures. After incubation, the fungal cultures were evaluated, and the fungal counting was expressed in unit-forming colonies (UFC) and frequency in samples (%). The fungi were examined by lactophenol blue solution staining for microscopy. All samples of treatment I and II were contaminated with various fungal genera and high bioburden, namely (treatment I) Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, Cladosporium spp., Fusarium spp., Mucor spp., Nigrospora spp., Not Sporulated Fungi (NSF), Penicillium spp., Rhizopus spp., Rhodotorula spp., Trichoderma spp. and yeasts. Treatment II showed Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, A. ochraceus, Cladosporium spp., Mucor spp., NSF, Penicillium spp., Phoma spp., Rhizopus spp., Rhodotorula spp., Trichoderma spp., and yeasts. Treatment III presented NSF and yeasts, with 80% of material decontamination.

Abstract: In this work, the possible benefits obtained due to the implementation of evaporative emissions control measures, originating from vehicle fueling processes, on ozone concentrations are verified. The measures studied are: (1) control at the moment when the tank trucks supply the fuel to the gas stations (Stage 1); (2) control at the moment when the vehicles are refueled at the gas stations, through a device installed in the pumps (Stage 2); (3) same as the previous control, but through a device installed in the vehicles (ORVR). The effects of these procedures were analyzed using numerical modeling with the VEIN and WRF/Chem models for a base case in 2018 and different emission scenarios, both in 2018 and 2031. The results obtained for 2018 show that the implementation of Stages 1 and 2 would reduce HCNM emissions by 47.96%, with a consequent reduction of 19.9% in the average concentrations of tropospheric ozone. For 2031, the greatest reductions in ozone concentrations were obtained with the scenario without ORVR, and with Stage 1 and Stage 2 (64.65% reduction in HCNM emissions and 31.93% in ozone), followed by the scenario with ORVR and with Stage 1 and Stage 2 (64.39% reduction in HCNM emissions and 32.98% in ozone concentrations).

Abstract: Fungal bioburdens in filters from car air conditioning systems represent a potential risk of respiratory or pulmonary diseases to both passengers and drivers. The present study demonstrated high fungal contamination in air conditioning filters collected from fifty-seven vehicles from the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The filters samples were irradiated with 10, 15 and 20 kGy gamma ray doses with a cobalt-60 source. The presence of Aspergillus flavus, Penicillium glabrum and Fusarium incarnatum-equiseti remaining after the ionizing treatment with 10 and 15 kGy. The radioresistant pathogenic species was confirmed through genetic sequencing of the ITS, β-tubulin and calmodulin gene rDNA regions. The 20 kGy dose was efficient in inhibiting pathogenic fungi growth in all samples but promoted the fungal decontamination in 79% of the samples. These results and other efforts will enable ionizing radiation to become an important tool in contributing to the recycling of automotive vehicle air filters and in ensuring indoor air quality for both drivers and passengers.

Abstract: In Brazil impounded vehicle scrapyards (IVS) are often overcrowded and may pose a source of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). In this study, PTEs content in soil cores and groundwater of an IVS located at a municipality of the So Paulo metropolitan region was assessed. INAA, XRF and ICP-MS were the analytical techniques employed. PTEs results and statistical approaches indicated that As, Pb, Ni, Cu and Nb are mostly anthropic. Pb, Cu, Ni and Nb mass fraction increased with depth indicating some downward mobility. Arsenic may represent a moderate to very high potential ecological risk. PTEs groundwater levels were bellow drinking water recommendation limits.

Spatial-temporal variability of metal pollution across an industrial district, evidencing the environmental inequality in São Paulo. Environmental Pollution, v. 263, Part A, p. 1-8, 2020. DOI: 10.1016/j.envpol.2020.114583

Abstract: Although air pollution decreased in some cities that shifted from an industrial to a service-based economy, and vehicular emission regulation became more restrictive, it is still a major risk factor for mortality worldwide. In central S~ao Paulo, Brazil, air quality monitoring stations and tree-ring analyses revealed a decreasing trend in the concentrations of particulate matter and metals. Such trends, however, may not be observed in industrial districts located in the urban periphery, where the usual mobile sources may be combined with local stationary sources. To evaluate environmental pollution in an industrial district in southeastern S~ao Paulo, we assessed its spatial variability, by measuring magnetic properties and concentrations of Al, Ba, Ca, Cl, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, P, S, Sr, Zn in the bark of 62 trees, and its temporal trends, by measuring Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, Zn in tree rings of three trees. Source apportionment analysis based on tree barks revealed two clusters with high concentrations of metals, one related to vehicular and industrial emissions (Al, Ba, Cu, Fe, Zn) in the east side of the industrial cluster, and the other related to soil resuspension (Cu, Zn, Mn) in its west side. These patterns are also supported by the magnetic properties of bark associated with iron oxides and titanium-iron alloy concentrations. Dendrochemical analyses revealed that only the concentrations of Pb consistently decreased over the last four decades. The concentrations of Cd, Cu, Ni, V, and Zn did not significantly decrease over time, in contrast with their negative trends previously reported in central S~ao Paulo. This combined biomonitoring approach revealed spatial clusters of metal concentration in the vicinity of this industrial cluster and showed that the local population has not benefited from the decreasing polluting metal concentrations in the last decades.

Abstract: The impact of a scrapyard of impounded vehicles in Sa˜o Paulo state on topsoil was evaluated for As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, V, Zn and rare earth elements (REEs). Mass fractions of all elements, except for Co, Cu, Mo and Zn, were higher than reference values. Hot spots were observed for most elements suggesting vehicular source. The geoaccumulation index showed moderate pollution of As. The enrichment factor pointed to a significant enrichment of As, Mo and Pb. The normalization of REEs to Earth’s crust values indicated a positive anomaly of Ce. The results indicate a potential risk to the soil quality of the scrapyard.
