LEE, S.Y.; VERST, C.G.; LANGTON, C.A.; MARUMO, J.T. ; VICENTE, R. ; FERREIRA, E.G. . Thermal modeling study for geologic borehole conceptual design. In: WASTE MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE, March 05-09, 2017, Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Proceedings... 2017. p. 1-16.

Abstract: Instituto de Pesquisas Energeticas e Nucleares (IPEN-CNEN/SP) is developing a strategy for safe, permanent disposal of disused sealed radioactive sources (DSRS) from industrial and medical applications within Brazil. The Institute is proposing modifications to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Borehole Disposal of Sealed Radioactive Sources (BOSS) concept originally developed by the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa. The current Brazilian modified design differs from the IAEA design in that the disposal zone is below 300 m versus 30 m of the boss concept, and will be used to dispose of a much larger number of DSRS. These modifications result in a considerable departure from the generic safety case established by IAEA. Therefore, a new safety case is required to assess radiological and thermal impacts among other considerations. Predictive modeling and simulations were performed to address impacts of the proposed borehole concept at the early design stage in order to provide timely improvements to the concept and a traceable rationale for decisions made throughout the program as required by the safety case. Preliminary objectives of the modeling effort were focused on evaluating the mechanical and thermal loads anticipated within the current Brazilian borehole disposal concept in order to assess potential material and design issues. This paper presents the thermal modeling predictions and performance results for the proposed BOSS design.

In: INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR ATLANTIC CONFERENCE, October 22-27, 2017, Belo Horizonte, MG. Proceedings... Rio de Janeiro, RJ: Associação Brasileira de Energia Nuclear, 2017.

Abstract: In order to project a nuclear reactor, the neutronic calculus must be validated, so that its thermal limits and safety parameters are respected. Considering this issue, this research aims to evaluate the APTh thermal limits. This PWR is a project develope composed of Uranium and Thorium oxide mixed (U,Th)O2. For this purpose, a simplified, although conservative, code was developed in a MATLAB environment named hydraulics Code-Mixed Oxide Thorium”. This code provides axial and radial temperature distribution, as well as DNBR distribution over the hottest channel of the reactor core. Moreover, it brings other hydraulic quantities, such as pressure drop over the fuel rod, considering any fuel proportion of (U,Th)O2.The software uses basic laws of conservation of mass, momentum and energy, it also calculates the thermal conduction equation, considering the thermal conductive coefficie finite elements method was used. Furthermore, the proportion of 36% of UO2 was used to evaluate the temperature over the fuel rod and DNBR minimum in three burn conditions: beginning, middl program has proven to be efficient in every condition and the results evidenced that the APTh an initial analysis, has its thermal limits within the recommended security parameters.

BARABAS, ROBERTA de C. ; SABUNDJIAN, GAIANE . The use of a neuroscience-based methodology to demystify and teach about the benefits of the nuclear field: neuroscience applied to nuclear energy teaching. In: SIMPOSIO INTERNACIONAL SOBRE EDUCACION, CAPACITACION, EXTENSION Y GESTION DEL CONOCIMIENTO EN TECNOLOGIA NUCLEAR, 2., 13-17 de novembro, 2017, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Anais... 2017.

Abstract: Science, technology and innovation play an essential role in helping countries increase the quality of life they offer their citizens. Since the discovery of nuclear fission in the 30s, the peaceful applications of nuclear technology have benefited several fields. Improved crops, preservation of food, health advance – specially for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer –, environment protection and a stable supply of energy can be cited as contributions of nuclear technology for global wellbeing. Despite its benefits the nuclear energy is still addressed with prejudice. Accidents in nuclear field have contributed for its negative image. Prejudice against nuclear energy lead to misconceptions on the theme, which interfere with authorities’ decision on the development of new nuclear technology. Education is the starting point for public acceptance of nuclear technology. Educational neuroscience is an emerging scientific field that explores the interactions between biological processes and education and helps identify and change implicit associations. This paper aims to demonstrate how the previous knowledge may interfere with the implicit associations towards a source of energy. The first steps of a neuroscience-based methodology in progress are presented in this paper: a) a pretest with specialists of the nuclear field; b) a subsequent test with lay subjects; and c) comparison of the results from the pretest and test. A future step consists of applying neuroscience principles to Brazilian science teachers to identify and modify implicit attitudes towards nuclear technology to promote an assertive teaching-learning process The global educational scenario has demonstrated absence of neuroscience-based methods for the nuclear technology teaching and that represents an opportunity for developing strategic teaching methods that will help demystifying the theme consequently improving public acceptance of this type of technology. Once the real scenario is demystified, the population will have a broad vision of all contributions of the nuclear field.

PEREIRA, LUIZ A.T. ; ROSSI, JESUALDO L. . The recycling through melting machining chips, preliminary results. In: INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR ATLANTIC CONFERENCE, October 22-27, 2017, Belo Horizonte, MG. Proceedings... Rio de Janeiro, RJ: Associação Brasileira de Energia Nuclear, 2017.

Abstract: PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor) reactors employ as nuclear fuel UO2 pellets packed in zirconium alloy tubes, called cladding. In the manufacture of the tubes, machining chips are generated which cannot be discarded, since the recycling of this material is strategic in terms of nuclear technology, legislation, economics and the environment. These nuclear alloys are very expensive and are not produced in Brazil and are imported for the manufacture of nuclear fuel. In this work, it will examined methods not yet studied to recycle Zircaloy chips using electron beam furnace in order to obtain ingots. In addition, it is intended to carry out the melting of new Zircaloy alloys, from the melting of zirconium sponge obtained in IPEN and imported and Zircaloy bars. The mechanical properties and the present phases of the material should be determined, as well as, the characterization of the microstructures by optical microscopy. This work, therefore, aims at the creation of a new line of research where methods will be approached to recycle the Zircaloy chips and to reduce in 30 times the volume by means of melting the enormous amount of material stored in the form of machining chips, being able to do others components for nuclear or chemical industry use, as well as conducting basic development research.

SANTOS, ADIMIR dos ; SILVA, GRACIETE S. de A. e . The impact of the new nuclear data libraries on the isothermal reactivity coefficient determination. In: INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTATIONAL METHODS APPLIED TO NUCLEAR SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, April 16-20, 2017, Jeju, Korea. Proceedings... Daejeon, Korea: Korean Nuclear Society, 2017.

Abstract: The impact of the new released evaluations for 235U, 238U, 16O, and S(α,β) for hydrogen bound water, in the determination of the isothermal reactivity coefficient of thermal reactors fueled with slightly enriched uranium is addressed in this work. The experiment to serve as a benchmark for this kind of reactor response is the inversion point of the isothermal reactivity coefficient of the IPEN/MB-01 reactor which was recently approved to be included in the IRPhE handbook. The theoretical analyses have been performed employing the coupled NJOY/AMPX-II/TORT systems. The analyses reveal that the major impacts are due to new data of 235U and to those of S(α,β) for hydrogen bound in water. The (C-E)/E values when considering the new data from these libraries show an excellent progress in the theoretical determination of this very important reactor response. The new data for 238U and 16O show very little impact on the analysis. This work supports the developments recently adopted in the generation of the new nuclear data libraries for 235U and for the S(α,β) for hydrogen bound in water.

The effect of gamma radiation on the structure of graphene oxide and graphene oxide functionalized with amino-PEG. In: INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR ATLANTIC CONFERENCE, October 22-27, 2017, Belo Horizonte, MG. Proceedings... Rio de Janeiro, RJ: Associação Brasileira de Energia Nuclear, 2017.

Abstract: The functionalization of graphene oxide (GO) with polyethylene glycol (PEG) has been widely used in drug delivery systems. This nanocomposite exhibits excellent stability in the presence of high concentrations of salts and proteins and shows to be less toxic than its raw form in vitro and in vivo. However, it must be sterilized before use in the medical field and the gamma irradiation shows a promising option for this purpose. Sterilization by ionizing energy through gamma rays, generated by Cobalt-60 self-disintegration, consists in exposing the materials to short electromagnetic waves. The irradiation process provides substantial advantages when compared to thermal and chemical processes such as more precise control of the process, production of products with superior qualities, lower energy consumption and less environmental pollution. In this work the effect of gamma radiation on the structure of GO and GO functionalized com Amino-PEG (GO-PEG-NH2) irradiated with different doses (15, 25, 35 and 50 kGy) and rate dose 7.31 kGy.h-1 was evaluated. The analyses were performed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the methods for the synthesis of GO and GO-PEG-NH2 was effective since there was confirmation of the surface oxidation of materials and functionalization with the PEG-NH2 and the sterilization by gamma radiation does not caused any defects on materials.

In: INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR ATLANTIC CONFERENCE, October 22-27, 2017, Belo Horizonte, MG. Proceedings... Rio de Janeiro, RJ: Associação Brasileira de Energia Nuclear, 2017.

Abstract: Edible films and coatings have received considerable attention in recent years for their advantages over synthetic films for edible packaging materials. Chia seeds (Salvia hispanica L.) have functional and important nutritional values: protein content (15–25%), fats (30–33%), carbohydrates (26–41%), dietary fiber (18–30%), and ash (4-5%). It also contains a high amount of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Mucilage of chia, a natural exudates from chia seeds, is mainly composed of xylose, glucose and glucuronic acid forming a branched polysaccharide. In the present preliminary work whole chia seeds were irradiated in a 60Co source Gammacell 220 (AECL) with doses of 0, 5 and 10 kGy, dose rate about 0.8 kGy h-1. The irradiated seeds were crushed and soaked in an aqueous solution (6% w/w) together with glycerol (1% w/w), under magnetic stirring for 15 minutes at room temperature and poured into casting plates. The plates were placed in an oven with forced air circulation at 35 °C for at least 20 h. Water uptake, moisture, solubility and water activity of the films were established. The most expressive result was a decrease in water uptake with the increase of the radiation dose. Solubility remained almost unaffected by radiation in doses of 5kGy and moisture analysis showed also a decrease with dose.

In: ANNUAL WASTE MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE, 43rd, March 5-9, 2017, Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Proceedings... Tempe, Arizona, USA: Waste Management Symposia, 2017. p. 1-13.

Abstract: The Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN-CNEN/SP) in Sao Paulo-Brazil, is considering borehole disposal of disused sealed radioactive sources (DSRS), which were used in smoke detectors, lightning arrestors, radiotherapy, industrial gauges, irradiators, and other applications. The current IPEN concept of borehole is a modified BOSS system developed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It differs from the IAEA’s design in that the disposal zone is below 300 m, and the DSRS are placed directly in the disposal packages constituted of stainless steel containers with 1.5 L capacity. A borehole drilled through sediment and granite, stabilized with stainless steel casing and cement grout is proposed for the conceptual model. Standard cement-material test methods and performance specific test methods, including accelerated aging methods, are needed for modeling the performance of the candidate cementitious grouts. A cross-disciplinary team from the USA Savannah River National laboratory is providing technical assistance to IPEN in this performance assessment.

Technical feasibility study on volumetric reduction of radioactive wastes using plasma technology. In: INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR ATLANTIC CONFERENCE, October 22-27, 2017, Belo Horizonte, MG. Proceedings... Rio de Janeiro, RJ: Associação Brasileira de Energia Nuclear, 2017.

Abstract: The radioactive waste arising from nuclear reactors, hospitals, industry and research institutes are generated daily with a considerable amount. To final dispose of these radioactive waste safely and cost effectively, they must be transformed into physical and chemical compounds suitable for radionuclides immobilization with maximum volume and exhaust gaseous reduction. In this scope, among the promising technologies for the radioactive waste treatment, plasma technology allows reducing substantially the waste volume after exposing them to temperatures above 2,500ºC. In the planning and management of radioactive waste, the challenges related to plasma technology are presented as a motivation factor for the possible implantation of plasma reactors in nuclear plants and research centers aiming at improving the process of radioactive waste management.

Technical and economic feasibility study for the reactivation of the integral test facility of IPEN/CNEN Nuclear Engineering Center. In: INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR ATLANTIC CONFERENCE, October 22-27, 2017, Belo Horizonte, MG. Proceedings... Rio de Janeiro, RJ: Associação Brasileira de Energia Nuclear, 2017.

Abstract: The Integral Test Facility of Nuclear Engineering Center (CEN/IPEN/CNEN-SP), known as “Loop 70”, is a semi-industrial thermal-hydraulic test facility and can operate as a BWR (Boiling Water Reactor) or a PWR (Pressurizing Water Reactor) mode. Designed and built in the 1980’s, it is currently disabled. The experimental circuits (“test loop”) are facilities that reproduce the thermohydraulic and fluiddynamic conditions that occur inside a reactor and are used to simulate the practical reality which it is not possible to be obtained through mathematical models. In this context, this research project aims the development of a Business Plan to analyze the technical and economic feasibility related to the reactivation of the facility. This methodology (adapted to the government sector) is a decision-making tool that will offer a wide perspective of the project, set the guidelines and actions that will define the future of the facility and provide a general rule to make investments on it. This paper presents the historic aspects to better understand the Loop 70’s current situation. It also presents information about similar facilities around the world, services that can be offered (thermal-hydraulics parameters measurements, equipment qualification and transient analysis due accident situations), results of the strategic analysis (SWOT) performed, specific goals for each critical success or failure factor of the facility, financial aspects related to the reactivation and an overview of the facility’s perspectives.

Abstract: Brazil is one of the largest producers of ethanol in the world. However, during the process of ethanol production, large quantities of vinasse are generated which can be harmful to the biota due to its physical and chemical properties. Thus, there is a growing interest in identifying new processes for its treatment. Microbial fuel cells (MFC) are bioreactors whose technology has been considered promising for the treatment of biodegradable waste and simultaneous production of clean and sustainable energy. In this context, our study evaluated the possible application of a double chamber MFC for the vinasse treatment. We observed a reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 58.8%, and a current density of 330 mWm-2 in a period of 28 days. Taking into consideration our preliminary results, we concluded that the MFC technology presents itself as highly promising for the treatment of vinasse. However, further studies on the configuration and operation of the MFC are required for a higher number of cycles.

In: INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR ATLANTIC CONFERENCE, October 22-27, 2017, Belo Horizonte, MG. Proceedings... Rio de Janeiro, RJ: Associação Brasileira de Energia Nuclear, 2017.

Abstract: Caffeine, a substance with belongs to the group of methylxanthines, is alkaloids that penetrate in the human epidermis but is not easily absorbed into the bloodstream. With a dermatological active substance, it exerts action on the subcutaneous adipose tissue causing adipocyte lipolysis through the inhibition of phosphodiesterase. Based on these considerations, the objective of this study was to investigate the behavior of caffeine in a polymeric hydrogel matrix, for possible cosmeceutical applications. The hydrogels were cross-linked and sterilized by colbat-60 source gamma irradiation. In the characterization, were used thermogravimetry (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was possible to observe by SEM the presence of crystals in the hydrogel sample. The DSC experiment confirmed a crystallinity of the sample and that caffeine is not degraded by gamma irradiation at 25 kGy. The results were satisfactory, allowing a new investigations that certify the benefits of its application.

In: EUROPEAN RESEARCH REACTOR CONFERENCE, May 14-18, 2017, Rotterdam, Netherlands. Proceedings... Brussels, Belgium: European Nuclear Society, 2017. p. 1-15.

Abstract: Sustainability is gaining prominence in the area of operations management. By means of a bibliographical research, we identified in literature sustainable operations carried out by operating organizations of nuclear research reactors. The methodology applied consisted in gathering material, descriptive analysis, selection of analytical categories and evaluation of the material collected. The collection of material was performed by a search made on academic and nuclear databases, with keywords structured for the subject of the research. The collected material was analysed and analytical categories on the theme sustainable operations were established. The evaluation of the collected material resulted in references accepted for the study, classified according to the pre-established analytical categories. The results were significant. From then on, a theoretical review on the topic under study was structured, based on pre-defined analytical categories. Thus, we were able to identify gaps in the literature and propose new studies on the subject.

Abstract: Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In a country like Brazil, where nuclear activity is geared towards peaceful purposes, any operating organization of research reactor should emphasize its commitment to social, environmental, economic and institutional aspects. Social aspects include research and development, production and supply of radiopharmaceuticals, radiation safety and special training for the nuclear sector. Environmental aspects include control of the surroundings and knowledge directed towards environment preservation. Economic aspects include import substitution and diversification of production. Institutional aspects include technology, innovation and knowledge. These aspects, if considered in the management system of an operating organization of research reactor, will help with its long-term maintenance and success in an increasingly competitive market scenario. About this, we propose a sustainability management system approach for operating organizations of research reactors. A bibliographical review on the theme is made. A methodology for identifying indicators for measuring sustainability in nuclear research reactors processes is also described. Finally, we propose a methodology for sustainability perception assessment to be applied at operating organizations of research reactors.
