Abstract:
The effects of phototherapy on herpes lesions have been clinically demonstrated by either preventing the lesion
formation or speeding their repair. The aim of this in vitro study was analyze the effect of phototherapy on epithelial
cells and HSV-1 in culture. Cultures of HSV-1 and epithelial cells (Vero cell line) were used. The irradiations were done
using a GaAlAs laser (660 e 780 nm, 4.0 mm2). One, two and three irradiations with 6 h-intervals were done. The
experimental groups were: Control: non-irradiated; 660 nm and 3 J/cm2 (2.8 sec); 660 nm and 5 J/cm2 (3.8 sec); 780 nm
and 3 J/cm2 (1.9 sec), and 780 nm and 5 J/cm2 (2.5 sec). The HSV-1 cytopatic effect and the cell viability of irradiated
cultures and controls were analyzed in four different conditions: irradiation of non-infected epithelial cells; epithelial
cells irradiated prior infection; virus irradiated prior infection; irradiation of HSV infected cells. The mitochondrial
activity and cytopathic effects were assessed. The number of irradiations influenced the cell growth positively and
proportionally, except for the 660 nm/ 3 J/cm2 group. Any variation in cytopathic effects was observed amongst the
experimental groups. The viability of infected cells prior irradiation was significantly higher than that of non-irradiated
cultures when 2 irradiations were done. Under the experimental conditions of this study we concluded that phototherapy
is capable of enhancing epithelial cell growth and prolonging cell viability of HSV-1 infected cells. Positive benefits of
phototherapy could be resultant from prolongation of infected cells viability, corroborating with host defenses.

Abstract:
Over the last few years, low-level light therapy (LLLT) has shown an incredible suitability for a wide
range of applications for central nervous system (CNS) related diseases. In this therapeutic modality light
dosimetry is extremely critical so the study of light propagation through the CNS organs is of great
importance. To better understand how light intensity is delivered to the most relevant neural sites we
evaluated optical transmission through slices of rat brain point by point. We experimented red
(λ = 660 nm) and near infrared (λ = 808 nm) diode laser light analyzing the light penetration and
distribution in the whole brain. A fresh Wistar rat (Rattus novergicus) brain was cut in sagittal slices and
illuminated with a broad light beam. A high-resolution digital camera was employed to acquire data of
transmitted light. Spatial profiles of the light transmitted through the sample were obtained from the
images. Peaks and valleys in the profiles show sites where light was less or more attenuated. The peak
intensities provide information about total attenuation and the peak widths are correlated to the scattering
coefficient at that individual portion of the sample. The outcomes of this study provide remarkable
information for LLLT dose-dependent studies involving CNS and highlight the importance of LLLT
dosimetry in CNS organs for large range of applications in animal and human diseases.

Abstract:
Cancer has become a public health problem worldwide. Radiotherapy may be a treatment to a number of types of cancer,
frequently using gamma-radiation with sources such as 137Cs and 60Co, with varying doses, dose rates, and exposure
times to obtain a better as a stimulant for cell proliferation and tissue healing process. However, its effects on cancer
cells are not yet well elucidated. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the effects of the LPL on breast cancer
cultures after ionizing radiation. The breast cancer-MDA-MB-231 cells were gamma irradiated by a 60Co source, with
dose of 2.5 Gy. After 24h, cells were submitted to LPL irradiation using a red laser emitting at = 660 nm, with output
power of 40 mW and exposure time of 30 s and 60 s. The plates were uniformly irradiated, with energy of 1.2 J and
2.4 J, respectively. Cell viability was analyzed using the exclusion method with trypan blue. Our results show that breast
cancer cells submitted to LPL after ionizing radiation remained 95 % viable. No statistically significant differences were
observed between laser and control untreated cells, (P > 0.05). These findings suggest that LPL did not influenced cancer
cells viability.

Abstract:
The use of nanoparticle on dental light cure resin is not new, currently several compounds (nanoadditives) are used to promote better communication between the restorative material and biological tissues. The interest for this application is growing up to enhance mechanical proprieties to dental tissue cells regeneration. Bioactive nanoparticles and complex compounds with multiple functions are the major target for optimizing the restorative materials. In this work, we incorporate [Ru(bipy)3]2+ nanoparticles, that absorbs energy at 450 nm (blue-light) and emits strongly at ~620 nm (red-light), in PLGA Microspheres and insert it in Dental Light Cure Resin to promote the Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBM) effects to accelerate dental pulp repair by in vitro using cytotoxicity and proliferation assay.
