Abstract:
The backscattered light originated when machining with femtosecond laser pulses can be used to accurately measure the processed surface position through an interferometer, as recently demonstrated by our group, in a setup that uses the same laser beam for ablation and inspection. The present work explores the characteristics of the laser light reflected by the target and its interaction with the resulting plasma to better understand its propagation physics and to improve the dynamic focusing system. The origin of this returning radiation was studied and has been traced, mainly, from the peripheral area of the focal spot (doughnut-like). By means of a Mach-Zehnder setup, the interferometric pattern was measured and analyzed aiming to access the influences of the plasma on the laser beam properties, and therefore on the retrieved information. Finally, the wavefront of the laser that creates and propagates through the plasma was characterized using a Shack-Hartmann sensor.

Abstract:
Taking advantage of the inherent characteristics of femtosecond laser used for machining, we developed an
interferometric system able to evaluate and correct the focal position with an accuracy of a few microns, implementing a
technique based on low coherence interferometry. This approach measures at the exact spot that the laser is machining,
in real time, and is sensitive to any sample that acts as a scatterer to the wavelength in use. The experimental evaluation
was divided in two steps: in the first a system based on a superluminescent LED was mounted to check the viability and
develop the controlling software; in the second part a setup was mounted employing a femtosecond laser, and several
kinds of samples using the active focus control, among which the results obtained with glass sample and a bovine tooth
are meticulously described in this paper. The system was able to improve the performance in both samples, keeping them
in the confocal region for an extended positioning range, resulting in better engraving by the laser.

Eletronic response of a photodiode coupled to a boron thin film.

Abstract:
A portable thermal neutron detector is proposed in this work using a silicon photodiode coupled to a boron thin film. The aim of this work was to verify the effect in the electronic response of this specific photodiode due to boron deposition, since the direct deposition of boron in the semiconductor surface could affect its electrical properties specifically the p-type layer that affects directly the depletion region of the semiconductor reducing the neutron detector efficiency count. Three boron depositions with different thickness were performed in the photodiode (S3590-09) surface by pulsed laser deposition and the photodiode was characterized, before and after the deposition process, using a radioactive americium source. Energy spectra were used to verify the electronic response of the photodiode, due to the fact that it is possible to relate it to the photopeak pulse height and resolution. Spectra from the photodiode without and with boron film deposition were compared and a standard photodiode (S3590-04) that had the electronic signal conserved was used as reference to the pulse height for electronics adjustments. The photopeak energy resolution for the photodiode without boron layer was 10.26%. For the photodiode with boron deposition at different thicknesses, the resolution was: 7.64 % (0.14 μm), 7.30 % (0.44 μm) and 6.80 % (0.63 μm). From these results it is possible to evaluate that there was not any degradation in the silicon photodiode.

Abstract:
Boron thin films were produced using femtosecond pulsed laser deposition aiming at the development of a neutron
detector. As neutrons have no charge, in order to detect this particle converter materials are applied, promoting nuclear
reactions that result in the emission of charged particles, allowing the neutrons presence to be indirectly inferred. Among
the possible conversion materials, 10B has a considerable cross section for thermal neutrons and accessible cost.
Furthermore, the nuclear reaction produces easily detectable alpha particles, making it a rational option to develop a low
cost and portable neutron detector. The boron ablation threshold fluence has been measured by the Diagonal Scan (Dscan)
technique that resulted in the minimum laser energy value of 17.7 (6) μJ and fluence of 5.63(19) J/cm2. Boron
deposition was performed varying the pulse energy and deposition duration. The growth rate, morphological and
physical aspects of the boron pulsed laser deposition were characterized by a Scanning Electron Microscope and an
optical profilometer. The films surfaces have a flaky aspect with eventual droplets which had decayed overtime to a
more smooth surface. The studied parameters allowed producing a boron coating with the optimal thickness in order to
minimize self-absorption effect in the film, thus increasing efficiency.

Production of a square geometry americium standard source for use with photodiodes.

Abstract:
In the development of a thermal neutron detector using a square photodiode and a thin boron film, a radioactive calibration source with the same geometry was needed. An americium-243 standard source was produced by electrodeposition aiming at the calibration of a PIN-type silicon photodiode with a detection area of 10 x 10 mm2. To produce the samples two tests were performed. In the first test, a square stainless steel plate (10 x 10 mm2) was fixed on the surface of the conventional plate, which was removed after deposition. To reduce the loss of activity of the source, in the second test nail polish was applied on the silver plate leaving only an area of 10 x 10 mm2 without varnish coating. Once the electrodeposition process was completed, the activity concentration measurement was performed by alpha particle spectrometry. The first method presented a lower activity when compared to the total activity of Am-243 added initially. For the second method, the total activity was concetrated in the exposed square region (without nail polish). The results showed that it is possible to obtain a square geometry source; furthermore, the surrounding nail polish was not contaminated by 243Am. The comparison of these two approaches indicated that the second method was more efficient as it was possible to concentrate all the americium activity in the delimitated square area.

Abstract:
Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is a technique capable to perform elemental analyses of a variety of
samples, independent of matter state. Other spectroscopy techniques may require a destructive and time-consuming
sample preparation. On the other hand, LIBS is a less destructive technique with no (or considerably less) sample
preparation, using a relatively simple experimental setup. LIBS also provides a multielement analysis into one single
spectrum acquisition, applying a Nd:YAG short-pulsed laser to ensure the stoichiometry between the sample and the
generated plasma. LIBS have been applied on the study of carious lesions using a Nd:YAG into its fundamental emission
at 1064 nm. It was shown that ratio of P/Ca and Zn/Ca can be used to monitor the cariogenic process. Another minor
elements, e.g. C and Cu, associated with bacteria biofilm were also measured with the Nd:YAG laser. The fundamental
wavelength emission (1064 nm) of Nd:YAG is coincident with a hydroxyapatite transmission window and it may affect
the result. In order to address this issue a study used the second harmonic of the Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm. It was show
that it is also possible perform LIBS on carious lesion using the Nd:YAG at 532 nm. However, there is not a work direct
comparing the LIBS at 532 nm and 1064 nm for carious lesion detection. So, the aim of this work was to investigate the
influence of laser wavelength on the LIBS performance for carious lesion detection. In both cases the carious lesion was
detected with the advantage of no interference with hydroxyapatite at 532 nm.
