    Abstract: During its operational life, structural components are submitted to the influence of different failure-inducing agents, such as temperature and reactive environment. The combined action of these agents allied to the presence of residual stresses and applied stresses have a great influence on the components life and in-service behavior. Important information used for structural integrity evaluation of a particular component is the real stress state present in it. The possibility to determine the value of the stresses acting in the component by means of a nondestructive testing method presents an important feature because it does not introduce any changes into the material tested. The electromagnetic testing method based on the Barkhausen noise analysis presents advantages such as the possibility to perform stress measurements at high temperatures. This paper presents a study about the use of the Barkhausen noise analysis as a non-destructive testing method for determining the stress state in ferromagnetic materials. The experiments were carried out in ASTM A-515, ASTM A-36 and USI SAC 50 steels, used for pressure vessels and structural components manufacturing. The results obtained have showed a good sensitivity of this test method to stress changes. The main restrictions and applications of this testing method are discussed.

    Abstract: The structural integrity assessment methods of cracked components manufactured with ductile materials request the evaluation of parameters of the Elastic-Plastic Fracture Mechanics (EPFM) and of the Limit Load Analysis (LL). Since the use of numerical methods to apply the concepts of EPFM and LL may be costly and time demanding, the existence of the so-called simplified methods for cracked piping evaluation is still considered of great relevance. The following simplified methods for evaluation of the ductile behavior of piping systems are available in the literature and were considered in this work: J-T Method (J Integral versus the Tearing Modulus T), R6 Method and DPFAD Method (Deformation Plasticity Failure Assessment Diagram). The methods were applied for the computation of instability loads of some piping systems, with through-wall circumferential cracks, subjected to bending moments, made with high toughness steels. Changes in the values of the materials properties were considered. The estimated instability loads were compared with experimental results obtained in the literature. From those comparisons, some conclusions and comments could be made, being the main focus of the work the aspects related to the characterization of the materials properties to the appropriate application of the methods to cracked piping of pressurized water nuclear reactor (PWR) primary systems, in evaluations of the LBB (Leak-Before-Break) concept. As the methods are strongly dependent on the properties, some recommendations must be followed. These properties are basically expressed by means of the stressstrain curves and fracture resistance curves (JR curves).

    Abstract: Transmission photoelasticity was used to obtain an experimental solution for stress intensity factors, KI, due to thermal loads in photoelastic models. In a photoelastic plate, a slot to simulate a crack was introduced. Also, a tube to circulate a coolant was fixed in one of the edges of the plate. The photoelastic model was putted on a photoelastic oven and kept at 60 °C. Then, methyl alcohol at -15 °C circulated through the cooling tube. The thermal shock in the plate caused stress on it and, as a consequence, transient photoelastic fringe patterns appeared and were captured by an image acquisition system. For each captured photoelastic fringe pattern, the stress intensity factor KI was determined using a dedicated software, specially developed to do it, based on the Dally overdeterministic method. This results are compared with numerical analyses. Based on the obtained results, some conclusions and recommendations on the experimental techniques used were addressed. The paper present a alternative experimental methodology for evaluation of stress intensity factors due thermal loads. The construction of the models can be very simple, the used equipments can be of easy acquisition or manufacture. In this aspect, it should be noticed that in spite of the polariscope used in this work is quite sophisticated, it is necessary a rudimentary polariscope to conduct these type of experiments, just constituted of a light source and plane polarizers plates easily found.

A stress relaxation can occur depending on the a/W values which is known as loss of constraint and has strong influence on the structural steels fracture toughness. Different approaches have been proposed to quantify constraint and to describe the effects of constraint variations on engineering fracture toughness characterized by J-integral, or equivalently the crack-tip opening displacement, CTOD. This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation, in which single-edge cracked bars in three point bend SE(B) and compact tension C(T) specimens, with different relative crack lengths, were systematically studied via detailed three-dimensional finite element analyses. A new parameter is then proposed to quantify crack-tip constraint.

Para participar do RI-IPEN é necessário que pelo menos um dos autores tenha vínculo acadêmico ou funcional com o Instituto. Nesta primeira etapa de funcionamento do RI, a coleta das publicações é realizada periodicamente pela equipe da Biblioteca do IPEN, extraindo os dados das bases internacionais tais como a Web of Science, Scopus, INIS, SciElo além de verificar o Currículo Lattes. O RI-IPEN apresenta também um aspecto inovador no seu funcionamento. Por meio de metadados específicos ele está vinculado ao sistema de gerenciamento das atividades do Plano Diretor anual do IPEN (SIGEPI). Com o objetivo de fornecer dados numéricos para a elaboração dos indicadores da Produção Cientifica Institucional, disponibiliza uma tabela estatística registrando em tempo real a inserção de novos itens. Foi criado um metadado que contém um número único para cada integrante da comunidade científica do IPEN. Esse metadado se transformou em um filtro que ao ser acionado apresenta todos os trabalhos de um determinado autor independente das variáveis na forma de citação do seu nome.

É compatível com o Protocolo de Arquivos Abertos (OAI) permitindo interoperabilidade com repositórios de âmbito nacional e internacional.
